The Wire (a copy of my post on the Fall Preview Groups page)

Second post attempt; hope this works.

Things seemed to be back to normal when the show opened with Snoop buying a nail gun at a Home-Depot-like store, handing too much cash to the salesman, boasting about how she knows her weapons, and me wondering what's she up to, eventually hearing that the cops are wondering the same thing: where have all the bodies gone?

The political race: Carcetti 'trying' to raise $30 grand, cursing more than any street kid -- a little Rescue Me, a lot Sopranos (re Carcetti's favorite word), tho when he does meet up with his exasperated constituency, and we find out the Mayor's told city employees not to respond to these people's calls for help, I just ached with exasperation myself: the nastiness of the political corruption revealed to us and hopefully eventually to the rest of the city as Kima, my favorite female TV cop ever, gets her new boss to sign off on the wire subpeonas: Follow the money.

How the drug dealers (Marlo maybe as business-saavy as Stringer Bell was when it comes to investing in real estate and politicos) are still at it; names and faces change, but the game's the same. Bodie (I still have a soft spot for him, from when poor D'Angelo, may he rest in peace, was teaching him how to play the game) doesn't seem to have picked up on how this works yet, tho you never know. I thought he had more access to Stringer than Marlo and would've learned more. Don't know. Yet.

My favorite part was the children: Namond, Randy and Michael coming to Dukie's defense with pee balloons -- such sad and funny scenes. All the stuff about the kids -- Randy trying to trap a homing pigeon and being told by Dukie, the kid who seems to be without a home, that he's got it wrong, just makes me want to cry.

And school's about to start: Was it Michael who had to get Bodie's permission to take time off from the corner to buy school supplies? That is friggin' heart-wrenching. I want to use Carcetti's word here.

And then there's this juxtaposition between the Baltimore PD and the teachers: the Prez -- cop turning teacher -- and McNulty et al sitting through these absurd slide shows, which everyone knows are a total waste of time. Painfully wry.

Here's hoping McNulty will partner up again with Bunk or Kima, but sounds like he's happy as a uniform, gets to spend more time with his boys, seeing them off to school...

Am looking forward to seeing Bubbles again, hoping, as always, that he's okay. Wondering where Omar is. Waiting for ex-Police Commissioner Burrell to make his entrance -- looking forward to watching Prez working with these children, dreading the season in a way, cause I know something bad's going to happen to children I'm already getting attached to.

Wow, I love the Wire! I already watched the finale on demand, and WOW! This show has been one of my favs since season one. I love Bodie, I love all the kids and the connection between the street, the school, the po-po and the political figures. Why does TV guide not watercooler this?
