October 30, 2006: Do You Want to Die Today?

They shoot pot dealers, don't they? That question lingers as Season 2 of Showtime's Weeds drew to a close with a helpless, hempless Nancy staring down the barrels of not one or two but five serious pieces of firepower... never once setting down that prominently displayed can of Diet Coke. Her only possible salvation: Silas, now in possession of the final MILF weed harvest, but himself also in dire straits, with Celia and a policeman marching toward the 38-pound stash. And let's not forget poor Shane, who graduated from grade school straight into an impetuous, Cactus Cooler-fueled trip to Paraguay, with Kat (as in Krazy) behind the wheel, and Uncle Andy and Abumchuck in heated pursuit.

And to think that the Weeds writers almost tied everything up in a neat bundle instead! So glad they opted otherwise, (as explained in my fresh Features Q&A with series creator Jenji Kohan).

Was I entirely satisfied with the season-ending cliff-hanger? No, not entirely. I think it was a cheat to kill Peter off screen, though I understand the reasons for doing so. I also expected to see a major, original cast member get offed, if only for shock value, but the reality is that the instant you do that, this is no longer a "light" look at pot peddling, but a sobering look at drug dealing. I don't think that Weeds can continue on if you kill a Conrad, or an Andy. It'd be too sad (no offense to Martin Donovan and his portrayal of Peter).

My favorite moments of this, Season 2's final week:

— Andy pegging Kat as "bats--t nuts," and her then validating that assessment by diving under the bed sheet, cooing, "I want to lick the space where your toes used to be." OK, eww?
— An earnest Nancy, when Shane asks what he should tell his friends his mom does for a living: "Tell them I'm your mom."
— Shane invoking what Weeds scribes apparently guesstimated would be a hotter catchphrase at this point than it actually is, by declaring during his graduation speech, "There are motherf--king snakes on this motherf--king plane!"
— Shane's girlfriend to Andy, as Kat danced with Shane: "Control your woman, or I will." And you believed she would. Scary, them braces.
— "Wife-f--ker" Doug taunting "career-killer" Dean by boasting that he is not only freakishly tall, but "freakishly long."
— Celia rolling her eyes upon catching daughter Isabelle dancing cheek-to-cheek with another girl.
— U-Turn telling Nance to turn over her harvest with "due dilliging." Thank god someone corrected him.

Weeds, my wife, my in-laws and myself will miss you during what I hope is only a between-seasons hiatus. For more on the series' future, and some answers to burning questions about the dozen episodes gone by, be sure to check out my complete, unedited Q&A with series creator Jenji Kohan. In the meantime, thank you for participating in this season's TV Show Commentary blog!

I thought Shane's entire graduation speech was hys-ter-i-cal!!! At least the way they ended it leaves it open for a third season- before last night's episode, I was having trouble seeing how they were going to bring it back. And I'm not so sure we can count Peter out; I think if we were supposed to , we would have heard the gunshot or seen it happen- although I think it's better if he's out of the picture, as that storyline has run its course! (Okay Matt, just read your Q&A, but I still think they could bring Peter back for the first episode of season 3 if they really wanted to, since they killed him off screen....)

i just absoutly love this show. it keeps me on my toes and in stitches from laughing to hard. i would also absoutly hated and deeply sadden if showtime made a stupid move by canceling this show. showtime will be making a huge mistake if they cancelled show.

anyway i couldnt stop laughing at shanes speech. that was just way to funny. i also couldnt stop laughing at doug and dean fighting and nobody even tried to stop them. ohh they must of been like.oh i dont care. i wonder if ceclia made a copy of that tape nancy smashed up......if she didn't shes an idiot. i think my favorite moment (besides shanes gradution speech) was when isabelle refreed to her mother as voldermont from the harry potter books.

i just love this show way too much. its goign to be a very long year until season 3(hopefully there will be a season 3).

LOVE THIS SHOW!!!

One little thing...how did Silas know the safe was inside the kitchen island? I get that may have followed Nancy to the house or that the combination to the safe was something simplistic. I don't see how Silas figured out where the safe was. Was he bugging Nancy too? Surely you couldn't see find out from peeking through the windows.

Anyway I loved this season..The "freakishly long" comment by Doug was hilarious...was he spitting on Dean's face at the end?!!

Hope to see this back before August 2007.

I love the show, and it HAS to come back next year after a finale like that. That final scene kinda reminded me of the climax of the movie "True Romance", where just about everyone killed everyone else, except Christian Slater and whichever Arquette chick was in it. I loved that movie!

Three comments - one: Matt, last week you commented that you and your wife wanted to see the finale so much that you almost "fired up" the episode. That brings me to my second comment - how many of us watching have "fired one up" before watch? Just askin'.........

My last comment is for Matt - no matter how it was portrayed, no matter whether we liked the character of Peter or not, killing him (even silently, off-screen) is hardly a "light" look at the pot business. In 37 years, I don't know one single person who has been murdered as a result of my recreational use of the magic herb (maybe some intense muchies or paranoia, but no murders).

In 37 years, I don't know one single person who has been murdered as a result of my recreational use of the magic herb (maybe some intense muchies or paranoia, but no murders).

The unfortunate truth is that due to the insane anti-marijuana laws in the US there are growers here and elswhere who have killed to protect their investments. To add to the tragedy it is law officers whose services could be much better employed elsewhere who are usually the targets of this violence.

Oh and Matt, I think U-Turn was mis-pronouncing it as due dilligent not due dilliging.

While I get some enjoyment out of Weeds I would have to say that it is proof that one doesn't have to like the characters on a show in order to enjoy it. Other than Conrad, Isabelle and maybe Shane I don't think there is a single person I would want to know or spend time with. I have some sympathy for Nancy but she makes decisions that I consider to be far worse than dealing pot.

I think Andy is despicable. The kind of person who gets other people in trouble through his inability to act like he has a bit of common sense.

Heylia has some merit but her self-righteousness bugs me.

Doug and Dean are dopes.

Celia is right up there with T-Bag as far as I'm concerned but as a comic villain she is fun to watch. I just don't see her as having a true moral opposite on the show. True, Nancy isn't evil but she sure can be dumb. Like when she went on the conspicuous spending spree with her first big profits from the MILF weed. Why didn't she just send the receipts to the IRS and put up an "I'm A Pot Dealer" billboard on the main drag?

With Peter's (probable) murder Nancy's also now subject to homicide conspiracy charges. Not neccessarily her fault but she did set the actions in motion. What is it Jack McCoy calls it? The fruit of the poisonous tree?

My wife found the people on this show so unlikeable that she quit watching. She has no problem with the anti-hero types on shows like The Wire, Deadwood or Rescue Me but for some reason the folks in Agrestic really turn her off. Even though I watch the show I can't say I really blame her.
