You want watercooler discussion? Here goes.
Take that CRAP off TV! Seriously, remove the shows that are aimed at 5th graders like "Dancing with the Stars" "My dads smarter than your dad" and "Biggest Loser". Reality shows are pathetic! Seriously, who watches this crap?!?!
Shows with a storyline have moments that are funny, sad, scarry, worrysome thats what keeps people addicted! Think backwards in time. What made TV so popular to begin with? Shows like "Father Knows Best" and "Donna Reed" where you knew EXACTLY what that family was going thru. These shows were not "talked down" and were aimed towards family. Gunsmoke and Hawaii 5-0 had the drama and passion of the late 60's. Mary Tyler Moore Show the Waltons had the 70's and Doogie Houser MD and Cagney & Lacy in the 80's. Never in our history have we ever had the need to video tape people in a house getting mad at eachother with prompted fights and petty arguments. Scripted drama is fine, shows with a PLOT, with pretend people and passion. Those are where we need to go to escape. But do we have to watch stars past their prime dancing on TV????! Or comparing dads to prove who's smarter? Seriously people. Get over it. Quit watching this crap and start watching something you can feel passionate about. Enough of the stupid pretendreal drama. Just because you stick 7 people in a house or on an island with cameras, doesn't make a show. If you don't have cable and thats "all thats on", SHUT it off! Turn on the radio or play a board game with your kids. Don't watch it just to watch.
Over the past recent years, I've watched shows like Traveler, Crossing Jordan, Saved, and The 4400 died off because of stupid shows like "Are you Smater than a 5th Grader" and "Survivor".
Stop the insanity. Grow up people. Who really cares whos' dad is smarter and which person can cry the best for the camera or complain the most and cause the most problems. TV should be an escape. BOYCOTT REALITY TV!!!!!

I agree with some of what you're saying about the more stupid reality shows and the lame game shows like Deal or No Deal. There is so many that suck because people can't write good sit-coms or shows that aren't cop/forensic shows any more. I'm sick of tough women cops, cops and lawyers where every response in dialogue is a quip or lathered in condescending power.
There hasn't been a descent sit-com since Will & Grace ended. And the really good ones like Rosanne and the Cosby's (though I didn't like the Cosby's) had something that today's attempts at sit-coms don't have-- relating to wide audience. Bill Cosby was funny and that made the show. Rosanne was a hit because most of America related to that kind of "real" family interaction, struggle and poverty.
Today's sit-coms bite because they aren't believable: nice wardrobe, nice living areas, jobs most of us don't have, or just plain about getting laid.
But understand that reality shows are not reality. They are made up and scripted or at minimum engineered to exagerate the unreal. Reality shows are extremely inexpensive to create and so there are tons out there. The open slots because there just isn't anything good out today are won over by bad realities and game shows that do nothing more than emulate Do You Want to Be a Millionaire.
