October 4, 2006: Nine Scores a Ten

Jeremy (the delightful Scott Wolf) asks his girlfriend, Lizzie (Jessica Collins): “It was just a moment.... Does it have to mean everything?” This seems to be one of the questions The Nine is setting out to answer. And the answer appears to be “yes.” In the grand scheme of life, the 52 hours the nine main characters spent together in the bank were essentially “just a moment.” But the repercussions for the hostages are endless. It is the events destined to follow that are going to make or break this show for me. Scott Wolf has been a favorite of mine since his Party of Five days (before the alcoholism took over his story line), but I wanted to ring his neck when he kissed Franny (Prison Break’s Camille Guaty). Especially considering how adorable and wholesome and pregnant his girlfriend is. Although I have to say, something about Jeremy and Lizzie’s relationship seems off. Obviously, they were pretty serious. Lizzie was excited to tell him about the pregnancy.... She had met Jeremy’s parents.... And then she goes back to work without him even knowing and doesn’t bother to return his phone call about riding together to the funeral. Whatever Jeremy did inside of that bank must have been pretty horrific. Right now the question I most want answered is what the heck little Felicia (Dana Davis) is doing visiting Lucas (Owain Yeoman) in prison. Yes, Lucas is a terrible person — he held up a bank. But there seems to be clues that perhaps he isn’t as bad as he seems. When the police stormed the bank, Lizzie screamed not to hurt him. Maybe he is really just misunderstood — a young man influenced by his especially creepy-looking brother, Randall.

The cast was well chosen. John Billingsley (Egan Foote with an “e”) did an excellent job portraying the humorous yet eerily suicidal man. I loved how his facial expression changed once he sat down inside of his cubical on his first day back to work. I think most people can relate to that feeling. I also enjoyed Kim Raver (Kathryn) and Tim Daly (Nick). Their relationship should also be interesting to watch as it develops. They seem to have the law-enforcement bond on top of everything else. And 24 fans can relax; Kim Raver will be back in her recurring role at some point.

The reality of time is an interesting concept and one that is played with in the pilot. The hours the hostages spent inside of the bank have caused their lives to be connected indefinitely. Think how separate and different each person’s path was until they collided in the catastrophic robbery. The idea that life-altering events can unite people in a way that is almost impossible to explain or understand is terrific and one that I truly think is original. I am anxious to see if the show is able to really reveal to viewers just how deep and complicated these new relationships are. Based partially on Matt Webb Mitovich’s interview with Nine creator Hank Steinberg, I feel confident the show will be able to successfully communicate that.

This was the fourth time I watched the pilot and I was still captivated. In fact, it was even better with the commercials — honestly. The breaks came in just at the right moments, when you are left hanging and could use a minute to collect your thoughts.

One last observation: Did the hallway/police station seem particularly sinister to anyone else? What was with the smoky green lighting?

I saw a screening of The Nine a few weeks ago and I'm anxiously waiting to see how the series plays out. It wasn't at all what I expected, but it blew me away. It's a great concept and I hope it's able to continue the pace and intrigue of the story. I gasped at the last scene when Felicia went to see Lucas in jail--can't wait to see what the heck that's about!

I enjoyed the show. It was well cast. John Billingsley always puts a smile on my face. He just has a goofy charm about him. Glad to see Tim Daly as well. I've really liked his last two series that he starred in. I do hope this one lasts a lot longer than those 2. RIP Eyes.

Also nice seeing Camille Guaty. Muy caliente. I can see why Sucre went crazy for her.

I am thinking Lucas may have saved Felicia from the other guy or something of that nature. Or it could just be Stockholm syndrome where the hostages start relating to their captors. It will be interesting to find out.

I also am curious what Scott Wolf did so bad in there. It seemed like his whole relationship with Lizzie changed dramatically because of one decision or action he made. I guess his relationship with Lizzie wasn't solid to begin with for him to jump in bed with Franny so soon.

I am worried about Kim Raver. She looks so thin. I practically winced every time she got on screen. Why do actresses do this to themselves? She looked healthy just a year or two ago. Hopefully she doesn't lose too much more weight.

I need to keep watching this !!!
Since Randall told people not to worry because "this is all going to be over in 5 minutes" and they cut to a comercial break and left me hanging like that I knew this show was going to be an interesting show and hope it keeps its promise...plus all these familiar faces!! Kim Raver, Scott Wolf, Chi McSomething... it's fun 'cuz it allows me to identify the characters better.

I haven't seen such perfect casting in ages. Soooo very glad to see Chi McBride back in a promising series. He portrays such a great combo of strength and vulnerability.

Thought it was brilliant to skip right over the actual 50-something hostage hours. It keeps the whole event in a very esoteric realm as opposed to simply a series of events. Funny how much we can piece together just from the follow-up conversations...something I assume will continue in that vein.

Great pilot episode!!

I'm a sucker for any drama with a large cast, but this show in particular was just brilliant.

I get the feeling that the robbery was just the back-drop for the 9 people, and that their stories and relationships will move beyond that.

I really enjoyed this pilot. It really keeps you guessing about what went on in that bank for 52 hours. Am I the only one that is really curious as to what happened to Kathryn's hair? No one else has even mentioned it. I saw that the cop pulled a long chunk of hair out of Randall's pocket, but that was the end of it.
Also, so loved Scott Wolf! Been a huge fan since PO5. He was really solid in the episode IMHO. Gross that he slept w/ Franny at the wake where his girlfriend was. EWW.

This is my favorite new show! I am glad it lived up to the hype. I am looking foward to seeing just what happened during those 52 hours.
This show has great writing and acting. I felt immediately connected to the characters, which is difficult in a series premier.

I could not believe the hour went so fast. This show was great! So glad to see Tim Daly and glad he wasn't the "dead" cast member. I think Jeremy must have been either obnoxiously cowardly or arrogantly heroic. Either way, no one seems to have good thoughts about what happened in the bank with him. Can not wait to follow this one.

I really liked the show too. Anything with Tim Daly! I can't wait to see what happens next - this show will definitely be on my list!

I have only one mild complaint - who are the nine exactly? Only eight came out alive (since Eva died right away) but it seems like they count her. I guess she will be seen in alot of flashbacks, but I wish they hadn't killed off one of the nine in the first episode. Just seems odd.

Otherwise, great show!
