October 11, 2006: Carpe Diem

My mouth is literally hanging open right now — Jeremy (Scott Wolf) just killed Randall? I didn’t see that coming at all. Throughout the episode I kept thinking how strong Jeremy seemed and how well he was handling the entire ordeal — that he was the least affected by it. Wow. What was his motivation? Was it Lizzie saying she wished Randall were dead? Did something snap inside his head when he lost the heart-transplant patient? In the previews for next week they are already suspicious of Jeremy’s involvement. On a side note, couldn’t they have moved Randall to another hospital, considering two people he help captive for 52 hours have to work there every day?

There was so much going on in this episode — I am dying to know what is going to happen between Lizzie and Jeremy. It was interesting to learn they have been together for two years. Good that Jeremy stayed away from Franny in this episode; I really want Lizzie and Jeremy to work things out. The scene with Egan (John Billingsley) on the morning show was great, with the scores of screaming girls and people wanting his autograph. And how can you not cheer for him when he stood up to his prepubescent boss and was fired? The music and his little dance outside were fantastic, too. Someone expressed in their post last week that with all the intensity on this show, there was going to be a need for some form of relief. It is safe to say that Egan Foote is going to supply that relief.

The beginning clips in the bank were disappointing. What did we learn that really matters? Sure, Egan thought quickly and made up that story about throwing his wedding ring in the toilet. Kathryn (Kim Raver) showed a lot of bravery trying to talk some sense into the robbers. Malcolm was extremely calm and in control during that first hour, which is a huge change from how we found him last week at the end of the stand-off — shocked and almost unable to function. And Felicia was hiding undetected in the bathroom. Understandably, they do not want to give away too much just yet, but I was looking for something more to pique my interest. The conversation in the jail between Felicia and Lucas was also a little dissatisfying. After waiting all week to find out what was said, very little was revealed. It consisted of absolutely nothing of interest, which may have been part of the point. I did like how both episodes ended with Felicia going to visit Lucas. Not surprisingly, Lucas is beginning to emerge as having a softer, even heroic (?) side. He stood up for Felicia with complete disregard for the consequences he might have to face.

Nick (Tim Daly) is also adding an intriguing element to the plot. The story line with him going after the Feds was a little bit much, and I was wondering how they would really pull that off without ruining the integrity of the show. It seems as though it would have overshadowed the other characters and their stories. It is much more interesting to have him (pretend?) to go along with the Feds. Based solely on what has been shown so far, this is definitely not the end of Nick’s crusade to nail the people at fault for the blotched robbery. And his likeability stock went way up — with him backing down not to protect himself, but to protect Egan and Franny.

A solid second episode, but hopefully next week more relevant and interesting information about the robbery will be revealed. Oh, and it appears that the question of exactly which characters count as The Nine has been answered. In the promos Eva (Lourdes Benedicto) is counted despite the fact that she dies in the pilot episode.

Did anyone else find it strange that there was not a cop standing gaurd at outside the room where a suspected bank robber and possible murderer was in a coma? You would think that would be a high security area.

I really want to like this show, but I felt like tonight was trying to be too much - a little The Office, a little Grey's Anatomy, a little Law & Order - not sure the direction this show is headed.

Wow. I agree, I didn't see that coming and I was shocked. There was a cop on guard there, because he came running in right after the nurse but I guess he was lurking just far enough away not to be able to catch/stop someone from killing that guy?

But I can't believe they killed heart transplant guy! That was soo tragic. I actually teared up when Scott Wolf kept it together and managed to fix the guy's aorta or whatever and got the hug from his wife with the kid...aww, why'd they kill heart transplant guy? That was so cruelly sad. I can see why that caused scott wolf to break.

Yeah, I know, Egan is so lovable. How can you help loving the only one who's just to goofily, awkwardly exuberent about the whole thing. The others are all dark and unhappy, so it's nice to see him. He had nowhere to go but up, the one who had the least to lose, so naturally he's most well-adjusted about it. Though he has his own problems, like that shrew of a wife. Okay, we only saw her in one scene, but do you have to be so angry and selfish when he's so happy and wants you to have nice things and live life? Can't you lay off the bitching for a minute?

Chi McBride, I like him. I relate to his character. he's dealing with it, ignoring it mostly. His wife wants to help but can't, and he really just wants to shut it away and go back to his happy life. No more dysfunctional than how any of the rest are dealing with it.

I like Tim Daly, and his character is interesting, but I don't like the lawyer chick. I don't know why, her character just doesn't appeal to me at all.

They need to show more of what happened in the bank, otherwise, this show is gonna drag.

This show has alot of talented actors. I don't know if I will continue to watch a show that will rely very heavily on flashbacks to tell the main story. I was finding myself a bit bored towards the end of the show.

The only character that I really like is Egan Foote. I thinks he represents alot of people; trapped in a loveless marriage, toiling away at a humdrum job and working for a clueless boss. Egan got a second chance at life and he is enjoying every minute he can.

"Lost" utilizes flashbacks to give us a backstory on the characters, which enhances the current storylines and moves them along.

I think this show is awesome! I was floored as well when Jeremy killed Randall. I think I was most moved by the last scene with Felicia. Poor baby. I'm sure that they will pick up the pace of the flashbacks soon. I hope so anyway. I really would like for this show to do well. I think the cast is really great and I am dying to know what happened in the bank.

I think we did get one significant piece of information from the flashbacks throughout the episode (if it wasn't outright stated, it was heavily implied): That Felicia, from her hidden vantage point in the restroom, called 911--and the police showing up in response is what turned it from a five-minute in-and-out job into a hostage standoff. So I can understand why she's repressing so much, if she's placing the whole thing on her own shoulders.

And there was a cop on duty outside Randall's room; the scene opened with him walking over to the nurse's station, and then being shown somewhere down the hall (the nearest restroom?) by the nurse. With the nurse and the cop gone, Jeremy could walk right in.

This is kind of like Heroes to me. Interesting concept, some slowly-doled out twists/information, but poorly executed/directed/produced/edited. I don't mean the acting, which was very good. Much better than Heroes.

Felt off somehow. I'll keep watching it (and Heroes) as the plot is interesting enough (and nothing better is on).

I am really enjoying this show. It is well written and acted. This is a show where you can't take a bathroom break or you miss something significant. It's the details that make this show great. You need to pay attention.
My impression was in watching the first episode that Jeremy's behaviour inside the bank was why Liz isn't telling him about the baby and why she doesn't want to continue their relationship. Personally, I think Tim Daly is the one of the sexiest guys on TV. Did anyone see him play a gunslinger in the movie "The Outsider" with Naomi Watts?
I'm in for the long haul. I just hope the show is too.

Anyone notice that the "pre-pubescent boss" was Fred Koehler, aka "Chip" from "Kate and Allie"? He was a really cute kid who did not age well, much like Jerry Mathers. Anyway, I am hooked on this show, especially now that NBC has moved "Kidnapped" from Wednesday to Saturday, with the intent to kill it. I'm intrigued by what did happen inside the bank. I hope the writers actually know and aren't making it up as they go along.

Why did Jeremy kill Randall? Probably because he did something in the bank that most objective observers would call selfish and/or cowardly, and Lizzie either knows or suspects it enough that their relationship is probably damaged beyond repair. Randall may be the only one who knows what Jeremy did, or would be the only one willing to come out with it, exposing the doc to public ridicule, ostricization, and maybe even criminal charges, depending on what exactly it was. Ergo, in Jeremy's mind, he had to go.

Yes, the girl repressed memories because she's the one who called 911, and the resulting chain of events caused things to get worse in the bank, and her subconscious mind blames herself. As for her chasing Lucas for an interview, she thinks he did something to her benefit that made such an impression on her that his memory is the only one she'll trust to fill in the blanks (due to the repression/amnesia thing).

I really like this show and hope it sticks around. I like how especially last night it showed how each of them is dealing with what happened in a different way. I think that something snapped in Jeremy after he lost the heart patient. I think it was just too much loss. He couldn't save Eva and the security guard (Tom?) so the death of his patient just pushed him over the edge. I actually wasn't all that shocked that he killed Randall. I kind of saw that coming.

I also felt that the flashbacks last night didn't reveal much, until they showed that Felicia was the one who called 911 and it seems that she was getting flak for it. I still don't get her relationship with Lucas and why he is standing up for her. Jeremy killing Randall was a huge surprise but losing that heart transplant patient, plus all the flashbacks to him not being able to save Eva, must have made him snap. I guess he feels it's his job to bring some justice to the situation. He probably feels Randall doesn't deserve to live. I hope next week's flashbacks bring some clarity to the Lizzie/Jeremy storyline.

With me the jury is still out on this one. Mainly because I don't want to get hooked only for ABC to kill it. Also, it is moving at a slow pace. I guess once we get passed the introductions then maybe the pace will pick up. I not giving up on it yet but I am only giving it a couple more weeks.

I love Tim Daly ever since Wings. And this show has proved already that is better than last years show what was it called? Eyes? Anyway I hope he gets a chance this season.

Jeremy probably done something that Lizzie considers selfish or actually paid a little more attention to Frannie or let someone die.

I have a feeling that there is way more to Felicia and Lucas relationship other than the whole robber/hostage thing. I think Frannie blamed Felicia for Eva's death hence the reason Felicia is repressing her memory.
