November 22, 2006: Outside Perspectives
The format of tonight’s episode was wonderful. The way the flashback and present day scenes were tied together was very effective. I loved how as each of the family members finished describing their loved one the scene would switch to the loved one proving that their assessment was correct. As an example: Malcolm really did “take care of his own” by accompanying Franny to her mother’s house. The whole encounter at the mother’s house, by the way, was a bit unsatisfying. Eva’s integrity is constantly being questioned and each time she is fully exonerated and even proven to be a little bit nicer or purer than she was originally thought.
I also found it intriguing that the police were so interested in the hostages’ personalities. It never occurred to me, or I never really considered, how much of the action inside the bank was determined by how the individuals reacted, rather than the way the robbers conducted themselves. Of course, we have seen the way things played out due to Felicia making the phone call and how Nick’s police experience contributed to the situation, but a true understanding of how each individuals' personality really dictated a lot of what happened escaped me until now.
Tonight was filled with many of the little, and not so little — Hello Jeremy/Lizzie insight — answers to questions that have plagued us for weeks. We finally met Nick’s ex-wife Juliana, who was portrayed by Sasha Alexander. You may recognize her from NCIS, Dawson’s Creek or as the soap opera digest interviewer on Friends who Joey confesses to that he never actually watches soaps. (I watch a lot of Friends re-runs). Sasha gave off a very real cop-vibe — a little tough and a little rough. It was endearing to see the way Nick handled Juliana and was completely willing to put himself on the line to protect her.
Finally, we have the story of what happened between Lizzie and Jeremy. I was expecting it to be worked into the flashback scenes, but Jeremy describing it was much more gripping. I was also hoping for a more exciting explanation — something that would have justified waiting weeks to divulge — something really juicy. Instead we got a somewhat predictable story. Jeremy saw an opportunity to escape…he took it and didn’t give a second thought to Lizzie…. Definitely a valid reason to question their relationship, but harrowing enough to completely destroy them to the point that they can’t even talk about it? Well, I’ll leave that for you to judge.
A strong and very satisfying episode, but one question: What happened to Malcolm’s house being bugged? I guess we will have to wait to find out.

i know kathleen i was asking the same question "what happened with malcoms house being bugged"....i actually had to remind myself about that before the episode even started about the feds bugging malcoms house.
anyway i cant believed that jermey would run off and leave lizzie like that during the hostage sitution. im thinking that their relationship was in trouble even before the bank robbery.
i also liked how the cops were so interested in the hostages personalities. plus we found out some interesting facts about lizzie's life before jermery.
i love this show..i hope it sticks around some more...so we can find out what happened in the bank.

I didn't think that the Jeremy reveal was predictable at all. It never crossed my mind that Jeremy would try to escape and not have a second thought about Lizzie. I thought that maybe Jeremy had an intimate moment with Frannie in the hold-up...or something along those lines.

I agree the answer that jeremy gave was anticlimactic because they did not show what within the context of the bank. I also pictured a more intimate moment with franny in the bank as the big reveal but still good episode, I also wondered what happened to the bugging.

I thought the episode was hyped like some big reveal was going to take place. And yet...nothing. The one time where they SHOULD have used a flashback, they chose not to.
Funny, I also wondered about the bugging and what ever happened to it. This show needs to start developing some of these matters instead of just dropping them in our laps and walking away.
Disappointing overall. I think I smell a cancelation coming.

The main reason I watched tonight was to see Jeremy's confession, since they've been hyping it from the beginning. Actually, Jeremy telling Lizzie that it was a "moment", and wanting to know what happened in that moment, was the main reason for checking out the entire series. Gotta say, it was a bit of a letdown, especially without flashbacks. While abandoning your loved one is certainly horrible, I don't think someone should be held totally accountable for their actions under extreme duress. Maybe they'll show the flashback at a later time and we'll get a better understanding of what really happened.
The show has done a much better job of integrating the flashbacks into the present day. But some of present day stuff is still pretty boring, and I'm starting to realize why this show loses so many viewers at 10:30pm. I wasn't really invested in the Nick/Juliana and Franny/Mother storyline.
The way the police were interviewing the families was interesting. It was similar to how they interviewed the hostages immediately after the robbery. While I realize they needed to understand how the hostages were going to react, it was almost like they were trying to blame the hostages for the robbery.
Anyways, if the series is canceled, I hope ABC gives the producers enough time to show us what really happened during the robbery.

I don't think we know the full story yet of what happened between Jeremy and Lizzy. Jeremy told his family that the robber was "distracted" and that's when he decided to run. He didn't say why the robber took the two of them, not any of the others, into that hallway. I'm thinking Randall was possibly doing something despicable to Lizzy and that's how he was distracted and is possibly the bigger reason why Lizzy called it quits with Jeremy.
I enjoyed tonight's episode, but I'm always waiting to hear that the show's been cancelled and that all the questions will remain up in the air. It takes away from my enjoyment. I wish they'd give shows a full-year commitment from the get-go; I think that would help bring the viewers in. Right now, we're all a little leery of getting too attached to a serial show like this.

I think Wednesday's episode was really good. I really think the show is just getting better with each episode- I can't believe it isn't doing well in the ratings!
I loved how they worked Jeremy telling the story into the episode as opposed with seeing it in flashbacks. It made the whole scene so much more dramatic to watch his reaction to telling it, and Lizzie's to hear it coming from him and not just how she remembered what happened. Some small part of me doesn't believe that was enough to totally end their relationship though- I wonder if there was something else that must have happened.
I liked Nick's ex wife. I wouldn't mind if she stayed around more, although I still think I want to see Kathryn and Nick end up together.
Kathryn had a smaller part this week than I liked. She's my favorite of all the characters, and had a big part last week, so I guess that makes up for it. (Kim might also be filming scenes for 24 at the same time, so that could be why as well) It looks like they are setting up some jealousy issues for Ed with Kathryn getting the mayor's endorsement for DA (I got that from the previews). It sounds like everyone assumes that Ed is going to get it.
Each week makes me like the show more and more!!

I thought this episode was great! I was really eager to learn what happened to Lizzie and Jeremy, but I think we only got a piece of the story. Something happened between Lizzie and Lucas to bond them. She isn't afraid of him; she even seems close to him.
Did anyone else notice when they flashed on the board picturing the hostages, they had a photo of everyone but Egan? Is that his real name, or is he more involved in the robbery?
To ABC: Please give this show a full season to grow/reveal itself like you did Invasion last year. Maybe move it after Grey's Anatomy and show a recap episode. Please help this great show find its audience.

show has been pulled for now. Hope if it really is canceled that we get a "wrap up" of the story not like last years' Reunion that Fox canceled, or this year's Vanished and Kidnapped.. I get frustrated when networks cancel shows, and we the loyal viewers get no resolution to the mystery and are left hanging..

We should start a petition to ABC begging them to save The Nine. Whether we ask for another timeslot, or another network to pick it up! That worked with JAG, it was doing horribly on NBC and was picked up by CBS and became one of the top rated shows.
They never really gave the show a chance to do well. FOX's 24 was not a huge hit with ratings when it first started, and look at it now- HUGE with the Emmys to prove it!!!
Please ABC give The Nine a chance!!

I enjoyed the show. I can't wait to see what happens next with kathryn/Ed and Kathryn/Nick.
I wanna know why Malcom was being surveilled too.
I really hope they'll bring back the show.
