February 22, 2007: Slip-sliding Away

OK, so we had a little action this week. And by little I mean watching Michelle make fire with her glasses. At least we had two challenges instead of the combo immuno-reward thing the show had been sporting for the past weeks. Regardless, Ravu lost both, but still it was entertaining. Perhaps because there were no puzzles to solve. The reward challenge involved grown men and women throwing themselves, face-forward, down a slick mat and then tossing a ball into a basket. Simple? Sure. Enjoyable? You bet. It's not often that you see a person actually try to swim on land and kudos to Sylvia for that brave effort. Yau-Man versus Dre at the net (thank god we're not calling him Dreamz anymore) was unexpectedly nail-biting. The Rita/Cassandra face-off was exciting, but can we please get these ladies some support? You know what I mean. Would it kill Victoria's Secret to sponsor the show and give some of these women Survivor's first underwire buffs?

On to the torturous immunity challenge. Yes, it was a food challenge. Since we've gone a few seasons without one, my initial thought was: oh nice, Ravu will get to chow down on some hot dogs and burgers.... They'll have this in the bag over Moto. Blah blah blah.

No-no.

Let me be clear, there is nothing that I hate more on Survivor than the food challenge. On the menu: raw clams, octopus tentacles, peanut worms, sea cucumbers, fish eyes and hirsute pig snouts. Granted, there have been worse selections in past seasons – some of them still writhing. Like Anthony, I would have "no spit to swallow" any of those delectables. It says a lot that the starving tribe did not win the challenge. Seriously, if I want to see that mess I’ll watch Fear Factor.

Speaking of fear, I felt some for Gary when he was having labored breathing, but when he uttered that he didn't want to die in Fiji, I almost lost it. Poor guy. But not for nothing, his pain got us another visit from the Survivor doctor though this time I was checking to see if he was high instead of if he had dimples. Is that wrong of me?

It's probably just as wrong for me to be enthralled by Rocky. It could be residuals from a childhood crush on Stallone, but it cracks me up how Rocky is ready to get into it with anybody and everybody. With this latest exchange of words between him and Boo, that makes two Moto members he's fought with. Any takers on a third?

Now tell me this, did Earl search at all for the idol? Did he even notice Sylvia digging? Two people know the idol is at camp. If you're one of them and you see the other one digging, are you not going to sniff around their hole? I'm just saying. Anyway, Sylvia bought it at tribal. I felt bad for her because let's face it, she got shafted during her weeklong stay on the show: two stints on Exile Island, her tribe hated her, and she didn't get to live in the chateau she built. She just had no luck. Maybe it was for the best that she left sooner rather than later.

Next week, we'll see if Rita's lone vote for Earl has any consequences. Until then, keep the faith. The show has got to get better, right?

Entertaining episode. I like the slip and slide reward challenge. That looked like it was fun. Well not for Papa Smurf. He doesn't look like he is in good shape.

Ravu is looking like that tribe that couldn't win anything a few seasons ago. Not pretty. They look like a defeated bunch right now. Anthony's excuse was pathetic. He deserves to go the next time. Sylvia really had no shot in the game after going to Exile Island twice.

I will say that I don't like the new rule regarding the immunity idol. Before you could wait until the votes were tabulated to show it to Jeff. Now they are forcing people to use it before you even know any votes are cast against you. I guess the show is trying to put more strategy in when to show it. Still don't like it.

The have/have not twist is sucking the life out of this season. Watching one tribe vacation in luxury is just dull, and depriving the other tribe seems cruel in comparison. It certainly doesn't make for a fair competition, or interesting viewing.

Last season was always going to be a hard act to follow; so hard to follow, in fact, that this season has lost its way.

good episode, looks like things might turn around for ravu next episode.

as for sylvia i'm happy to see her go, she was terrible at the social game, don't apologize and draw attention to you mess ups in a challenge work on winning people over, if she had talked to rita she could of had a 4-4 vote at tribal.

Are you kidding me?! Anthony drank from the damn canteen as he was getting up to compete. No spit to swallow?! And to keep on saying the same excuse throughout tribal council was pretty lame. Plus – you just took a big ‘ol swig of water, and was swishing it around when he approached the tree stump (or whatever it was)

I kinda felt bad for Sylvia for being the outsider, but at the same time she was pretty bossy and didn’t listen a whole lot. It was sad to watch her diggin around for the idol while the others were around.

Now if Papa Smurf had bowed out last night, would that have saved Sylvia from getting eliminated (actual question, I really don’t know)? Or does it not work like that? Either way, he’s got some bad days ahead from the look of the previews.

I hate these types of food challenges. Can’t watch fear factor either. Nasty stuff, better thee than me.

It’s difficult not to make a swallow joke about Anthony…please insert your own here.

Rita, I love your outfit. Earl?! Way to stand out kid, I’m sure you made your point…no really, I’m sure of it. Earl needs to go, yeah we got it. Obviously we all agree. Love your outfit.

I didn’t get the doctor joke (high? Dimples?).

Rocky was great. Boo is being a cry boobie, I mean c’mon it’s a competition, people compete, kind of the nature of the game. Mocking others is our way of saying “we like you”. Don’t you have an appendage to cut off or some other self-injury to perform.

Even I clapped when Michelle made the fire, well played! It was nice that everyone specifically gave her credit for it too.

Sylvia should have said she was building a fire pit, would have been a fine excuse to dig a deep hole. Plus now that they have fire, it might have even been believeable.

Umm...Fear Factor is canceled. It's Survivor or bust (maybe The Amazing Race).

I guess I'm in the minority here, but I really like this season so far. I like that one team is spoiled rotten and that the other team can't seem to win if their lives depended on it. I don't like the gross "food" challenges either. I don't watch fear factor because they make me sick. It was interesting to see that the starving team couldn't even win that. Maybe I like it because I don't like the Ravu team so seeing them consistently lose is making me happy. I really can't stand "Rocky" so that might add to my bias against Ravu. I was happy to see Sylvia get the boot, she was so annoying. Looking forward to next week!

Did you hear about the new twist for next season?!?!? They're going to stomp on puppies and tear the wings off butterflies! Won't that be fun?

Let's see, we have one team with food and water, and one team that's dieing of thirst and hunger and - surprise surprise - the hungry/thirsty team is losing all the challenges. Gee, I wonder how they'll do next week? I'm not going to stick around to see if every single member of Ravu gets voted out. I'm not really into watching underdogs get beat up on. Call me crazy, but it's not my thing. I didn't watch the last Survivor, and I'm done with this one.

Now that Ravu has fire and can boil water isn't that going to put them in a better place? I don't see them going out and catching fish or clams or any of the things the other Survivors were always able to do, even without a fishing pole or a spear. And what about those pineapples and the other fruit on the island? Don't tell me it's only growing on Moto's side of the island.

Anthony was bothering me as well, and I saw him drinking water before the challenge. HATE those icky food things, along with all of the other posters.

I thought Sylvia was going, and she didn't do anything to help keep herself there, short of obtrusively digging for the idol. How come that didn't make the others on her team suspicious?

I THINK know what the comment about drugs/dimples was. There'd been an item about the medical guy. He's not a physician and had been getting/giving prescription drugs to people on the island during the last survivor. Think the reference was whether he was taking any himself, and instead of thinking that to just look at his dimples (he is cute!).

He is a physician. The problem was that he was prescribing medical cocaine for himself.

Thanks for that. I thought I read somewhere he was an EMT Technician and could take care of the survivor patients but couldn't prescribe meds nor give them drugs. Prescribing them for himself makes much more sense because why wouldn't the show have a real doctor!! Thanks again.

I need some help understanding the new immunity idol rules. If the person who has it is now forced to use it or reveal it before the votes are counted, the advantage of having it is completely negated.

Like I said in my post RobinOphelia, I would like to know the exact rules of the immunity idol as well. It seems like Jeff said you have to present it before the votes are counted. That makes no sense to me. If that was the case last season, Yul would not have won.

I agree with both of you, Speedy1383 & RobinOphelia, about the immunity idol. Like why bother BUT I think they're trying to change the entire thrust of holding the idol. The first two shows (if it was 2) it was never used, and the last one think you're right Speedy1383, Yul wouldn't have had the upper hand. This way you use it if you THINK you're being voted out, so it really has very little value except if the holder THINKS they're vulnerable, then finds they weren't, and no longer has the opportunity when their number does come up. But will that matter? Guess we'll have to see if anybody gets it and uses it when they don't have to or don't when they should have. Dumb, but maybe that's the idea??
