One Life to Live Bids Farewell to Asa in 10,000th Episode

As previously reported, Phil Carey quit ABC's One Life to Live when his contract expired in April. Since the veteran daytimer declined to go on recurring status, his Asa Buchanan character will die off screen. Sure, it's a bummer. But fortunately, Mr. Carey — who turns 82 this month — will receive a fitting farewell tribute this summer.

Several of Llanview's legacy characters will appear in the 10,000th episode on Friday, August 17. As you might guess, they'll be attending Asa's funeral. Here's the list:

James DePaiva (Max Holden)
Nathan Fillion (Joey Buchanan)
Dan Gauthier (Kevin Buchanan)
John Loprieno (Cord Roberts)
Tonja Walker (Alex Olanov)

Before you ask, Andrea Evans — who used to play OLTL vixen Tina Lord — is not among the visiting alumni. She's still acting on NBC's Passions as slutty socialite Rebecca Hotchkiss Crane.

Anyway, look for some fun stuff leading up to OLTL's milestone episode. As a special wink to the audience, the ABC soap will mention the number 10,000 in every episode from July 30 to August 10.

"10,000 shows is a remarkable achievement," says executive producer Frank Valentini, who started work at OLTL with episode #4209 back in 1985. "I am extremely proud to be part of a show that has been able to make such an enduring mark on popular culture."

"With immense pride, I congratulate all of the talented and dedicated people over many years who are responsible for the heartwarming success of One Life to Live," adds creator Agnes Nixon.

Are you as psyched as I am for all those returning favorites? I'm particularly tickled to see the handsome Nathan Fillion — who costars with Keri Russell in Waitress — come back and pay respect to the afternoon sudser that gave him his start. Classy move.

Speaking of ABC soaps, have you heard that Mr. Fillion is up for a juicy role on Desperate Housewives this fall?

I am really looking forward to this special event. I hope TPTB realize the talent they've squandered in those returning stars, and maybe lure a few of them back (particularly Max, Kevin and Alex)!

The show has been HYSTERICAL since Tuc Watkins returned, and his mere presence is bringing out the fun in characters Viki, Dorian and Clint! They have to do whatever it takes to keep David Vickers in town!

Hey, by the way, did anyone notice last week, when he and Viki (Erika Slezak) were watching that Cary Grant movie, and Viki said the actor who played Cary's best friend "totally steals the picture!"? Well, that actor Viki is talking about was Walter Slezak, Erika Slezak's father! Cool reference, huh? That's the sort of fun this show has become to watch lately! :)

I am sad to see Asa go but I look forward to seeing some of my fav actors returning. It's fine if Andrea can't make a brief return, I prefer a longer stay for her when both parties are ready.

How absolutely fantastic of Nathan Fillion to return to OLTL to celebrate this milestone. When I had heard the list of possible people returning I was shocked and extremely skeptical to see his name there. I'm really excited, he was one of my favorite Joeys. I only wish he wasn't returning for Asa's funeral :(.

I hear ya, angelgirlla. We'll all miss our cantankerous cowboy Asa Buchanan! :_|

But anytime I get to see Nathan Fillion is cause for smiles. Mr. Fillion is SMT — So My Type. ;)

Wow, that is incredible that Nathan Fillion is going to put in an appearance. That really is a classy move. I have always liked him, but that really elevates my opinion of him. Just so classy!!

I have watched OLTL since Larry was married to Marcie (?) but in love with Meredith, Viki was in love with Joe, while Niki was in love with Vinnie!!!! Asa has been a mainstay on OLTL, and will be sorely missed. I can not wait to see the characters of the past return for his funeral.

When I saw Nathan on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I remembered what a great Joey he was!!!! To bad none of the other Joey's could have picked up his torch!!!

I have been a Phil Carey fan since watching him on Saturday afternoon westerners on TV when I was young. I will miss him:_|

I, do, wish him well and hope that he remains in good health.

It will be great to see the "Buchanan Boys" again! I missed them all on the show but I know that they r doing bigger and better things.

B-)

If it was my funeral, the overwhelming hotness supplied by both Nathan Fillion and Tuc Watkins being in the same room would certainly make me pop out of my coffin.

Yay Nathan! How classy, that's being echoed a lot here, but it's so true cause it's so rare to see someone of his status come back to a show where he started his career. And BTW, he was the only Joey I liked, didn't care that much for the blond haired one, whatever his name was.

I'm sad to see Asa leave his Llanview family. I remember his last "funeral," when many of his former wives showed up. Wouldn't it be fun if they would all show up for this funeral and share their two-cents!

Anyway, guess I'll wish Mr. Carey all my best for his future (after the way Disney/ABC management has tossed him aside after such a long-term stay in Llanview!), and then I'll spend the rest of that 10,000th episode's night watching some of Phil Carey's other work, including my favorite, "Calamity Jane" (no, he wasn't Jane--that was Doris Day--but he was her love interest! way back in 1953. For younger fans, check him out in the early-60s Bette Davis melodrama "Dead Ringer."

Who else might we expect to see on number 10,000?

Nathan Fillion what a casting coop. Only 3 things could make that list more perfect Carlo Hesser, Karen Witter as Tina, and Yasmine Bleeth as Lee Ann Demerest.

maybe we should put this in "cheers and jeers" cheers to the producers of "one life to live" for giving us our nathan fillion fix by bringing him back in a cameo! jeers to fox for pulling the plug on his action series "drive" by putting it on hiatus after just 2 or 3 episodes, and then teasing us with an anoucement that i'll be back on the forth of july, with 2 final episodes, then move it to friday the 13th, now fox has decided to kill the show before it got a chance. leaving us in a real cliffhanger!!! maybe fx should've picked it up sooner.
