October 5, 2006: Sneeze

The Zod-related events of Season 5's finale and last week's season premiere have now been dubbed "Dark Thursday." This is so spot-on, because we all know that every news outlet races against time to come up with catchy names to describe freak occurrences as well as big global or domestic tragedies and events.

Now in the aftermath of all the destruction, an exhausted Clark is trying to single-handedly rebuild Smallville. Unfortunately, he has to do it while dealing with a very human cold. Except when he sneezes, he blows a barn door off its hinges. This cold serves two purposes: Clark (along with Chloe's much-needed help) realizes he can use his newly discovered super-breath to his advantage; and Lois Lane apparently forgets all about her political career to finally make the jump into journalism. Or whatever you want to call the article she writes that gets published in the "Inquisitor." I cannot believe she snagged herself a byline the first time out. I had to go to grad school and pay thousands of dollars before that happened to me.

It's Episode 2 of Season 6 and Lex Luthor has been kidnapped. Shocker. After Lex was nabbed, I remember thinking: "I wonder how long it's gonna be before he gets shot?" I would say it was about seven minutes. I really think we need to start a tally of how many times Lex gets shot in a season. Probably as many times as Lana gets possessed during a season. Lana tried to come to her boyfriend's rescue but didn't make it far. Does Ms. Lang seriously think she can save Lex on her own? Leave it up to Clark again to save the day and again to do it without her even knowing. But did you catch that scene between Lana and Clark, who found out Lana moved in with Lex? I agree with the big hero guy: "It's like we don't even know each other anymore." The girl was positively icy with her ex-BF.

After Lex's disappearance, Lionel all of a sudden decides to visit Oliver Queen, who just so happens to be in Metropolis and just so happens to be an old boarding-school classmate (and rival) of Lex's. Of course, he's behind the kidnapping, but I really did like the way Justin Hartley reacted to finding out Lex had vanished: "Been abducted? My god." Trust me, it was dripping with the appropriate amount of sarcasm. Very well done. So we know Oliver Queen is the alter ego of Green Arrow. I did read DC Comics when I was growing up, although I swear I don't remember many details. I do remember thinking that Green Arrow rocked so much more than Green Lantern. I loved ol' Ollie Queen, so I'm looking forward to figuring out where this all goes. As for Hartley, he's the Aquaman from the pilot that didn't make the CW's schedule this year, but you may also recognize him as the original Fox Crane from NBC's Passions.

And speaking of recognizing actors, that was Lochlyn Munro who played Lex's not-so-scary kidnapper (sorry, Lochlyn). But I so love this guy. You need to catch him in this little gem of a movie called Rock My World — it pretty much went straight to DVD, but I love that movie so much, I actually own it.

Briefly going back to Clark's super-breath: I totally loved the part where he blew the clouds away so that he and Chloe could go to the lake. So corny, but I fell for it.

wow, first comment! Great recap, btw. Something is definitely different in this scene adn I'm not sure I like it. Maybe it's the missing presence of Jonathan Kent. LOVED Oliver Queen. Hate Lana. She just needs to go away. She's so unbelievably stupid and naive. I never liked Chloe until around season 4, now I really enjoy Allison Mack. Lois is pretty dense too. I love Michael Rosenabum as Lex, finally admitting he knows he was possessed. So exactly how much does he remember? What does he know about Clark? Should be interesting to see this play out. Most definitely looking forward to more Oliver!

I found this episode to be much better than last week. While last week was good, it seemed like the whole Zod thing got wrapped up too fast. Glad to see there's a few repercussions.

I also like Chloe the best out of the girls. Always have. Although, I am liking Lois more and more. I agree about Lana being naive. FOr someone who never failed to call Clark on his BS, she sure takes it from Lex. My favorite theory out there is that Chloe takes on the identity of Lois Lane. That would be awesome. I've always wanted to see Clark and Chloe together. It probably won't happen.

Incidently, I am SO glad that super breath was finally introduced. I was beginning to wonder if the writers had forgotten about that power.

I thought Justin Hartley was great as Oliver Queen. I loved him on Passions and it seems that he's going to be a great addition to the Smallville cast.

I agree, Justin Hartley was awesome! Definately looking forward to seeing his story unfold. I cannot STAND Lana! I never have. I just want her to go away. Why do they even bother with her? She is such a complete waste of space, thinking she can save Lex on her own! Great episode though. I also enjoyed Clark blowing away the clouds, so adorable!

Another good episode. I thought Ollie was a little cardboard in the first scene with Lionel but the scene on the roof he was very good. I love Chloe to death. While I like Erica Durance as Lois, I am also in the camp that would like to see Lois Die and have Chloe take on the Lois Lane persona or pen name. There is just something about the two of them together that feels right more this season than ever before maybe its cuz Clark liked the kiss form the last finale? That scene were he used the breath to open the hidden room when Chloe told him how to it was just great. They had this real chemistry.

Lochlyn Munro pretty much rocks in everything he's ever in. Check him out in 'A Night at the Roxy' alongside Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan. I also dug Oliver Queen in this episode, he sorta comes off like a young Val Kilmer circa 'Real Genius', especially in his scene with Lionel.

My favorite moment of the show was when Lois walked into the Kent household to report the barn darn episode. Her line was spot on, "Does Clarkie have a cold?".. or however she said it, just had me on the floor, and the look Clark gave her in return. Precious. They also have good chemistry.

I thought the Lex being abducted scenes were actually kind of boring. It's been done many times before. Of course he knows more than he's letting on and of course Lana stupidly tries to come to his rescue. And, naturally, Clark has to sneak in and save the day. But what was with Lex's head-butt to Lochlyn Monroe? Like that would ever happen.

Anyway, enough negativity. I did like the Green Arrow stuff. Now that looks like it's going to be interesting. I'm also liking Lois more and more, but I'll never like her as much as I like Chloe. At least it seems like Clark and Chloe are still good friends. I was a little worried at the end of last week's episode that they might drift apart because of Chloe's budding relationship with Jimmy. I too enjoyed the corny scene when Clark blew the clouds away so that he and Chloe could go to the lake. I'm a sucker for happy Chloe scenes.

I thought Lana was nasty to Clark, but it's lana what else is new? The Lex plot was boring after such a great premiere last week they just had to go the kidnapped lex route. The superbreath SFX was really cool. Yup it's corny but I loved Clark blowing away the rain clouds. It had a romantic feel to it. Chloe is adorable as always, and Clark's concern for her safety was nice to see. Sorry but, Lois needs to die. She said that Chloe jealous of her. Lois didn't care that her article was fabricated with an alien twist to sell papers. So much for "journalistic integrity", Lo.

ok, i guess i fall into the VERY few who actually love Lana, however in this particular episode i found myself asking "what is she really going to do" when she went to "try" to save Lex after he was abducted!! The whole Clark and Lana scene was just cold, I mean Clark was seriously dismissed by Lana!! My favorite scene had to be when Lois came in after her jog to talk about the barn door that fell from the sky and almost crushed her, that scene just made me chuckle. I really like that a new power was finally introduced and the parting of the clouds at the end was in fact cheezy but still cute. However, the Heat-Ray vision still remains number one on my list when it comes to powers! This episode was in fact in my opinion a small step up from "Zod"

you are not alone sweetestdiva, i like lana and i liked her with clark, but she seems so over him, and it appears that she seems to believe all things lex. whatever! she has become a little cold and superior, and so dismissed clark in this episode. hope he gets his day since he always seems to save the moment! the clark and chloe scenes are so great. the two play off each other so well. the end of the episode was entertaining when clark used his super breath to clear the clouds. can't help but wish in some ways that chloe turns out to be lois lane.

I definitely don't understand why people dislike Lana so much. When she and Clark were together they were great. Let's not forget how many times he's lied to her, right to her face. She finally got sick of it. Who can blame her for the way she feels about him. Let's face it, he deserves to have her feel that way about him. He can't even come up with a halfway decent lie anymore. She asks him how he knew that Lex was going to be possessed by Zod and he just stands there like a deer in the headlights and she's supposed to be nice?

A side note to start with: I think Lochlyn Munro looks so much like Gary Busey (sp?) - does anyone else?

I love Clark and Chloe's scenes together - I'm so glad she knows about his powers now.

His scenes with Lois are pretty good too - can't wait to see how they finally get together.

Lana gets on my nerves - but not everyone can be friendly with their ex, so I guess we should cut her some slack.

I'm tired of Lex getting kidnapped and shot - way overdone.

I miss Jonathan Kent too! I want to like Lionel but still feel like he is hiding something.

Looks to be a good season!

This episode was very mixed. For the most part, it was pretty bad. The Lex kindapping plot was boring, and Lois' epiphany lightswitch moment was just ridiculous! She comes accross as a total bimbo in an episode that should actually be pretty epic & significant. Are we supposed to believe that this same woman will actually surpass Chloe??

And speaking of Chloe, her scenes with Clark were the only thing good about this episode. They have amazing chemistry, and it looks like they are setting up a romance in the not-to-distant future, which would be great.
