November 16, 2006: "Static"

I'm not going to say I didn't like "Static"; I am going to say that parts of it were very frustrating. The episode ended and I just really didn't know how to feel about it. Much of the hour featured Lex and Lana's "love" story, a story I'm just not completely feeling. Thanks to this "142" meteor-freak dude (we find out later his name is Bronson), Lex and Lana are living on different frequencies. It all actually reminded me of the movie Frequency starring Dennis Quaid and James Caviezel, not to mention R.E.M's "What's the Frequency Kenneth?" Anyway, while the two are spending time on alternate planes of existence, Lex hears Lana open up to Chloe about their relationship. Later, when she figures out Lex can hear her, she lets him in on her pregnancy. I feel like the show was trying really hard for us to get into their relationship. Did that happen? Not so much. Especially when Lana admitted that Lex has been more honest with her than anyone has ever been (yet another dig against Clark). What did intrigue me came after Lex and Lana were reunited. Lex was lying through his teeth about 33.1 (the lab where the experiments on the meteor freaks was taking place), saying that it didn't exist. Lana let it be known that she would understand if it were real. After all, these meteor-influenced beings have hurt her and the people she cares about; the best thing to do is to learn about them so they can protect themselves. Lana was acting even more Stepford than usual so it had me wondering: Was she on the up and up with Lex, or was she just trying to get the truth out of him? The hour ended with Lex's proposal, but we didn't get an answer. I honestly have no idea what she's going to do. What do you guys think — will Lana say yes?

We were dangerously low on the Clark action once again, but we did get to see him decide not to save Lex's life for a change. Instead, he's wisely starting to think past Smallville in favor of the well-being of the rest of the world. He raced off to Seattle to stop another escaped Zoner who pretty much overpowered Clark, despite the fact that he had the crystal Raya had given to him. By the way, how nasty was the thought of those poor victims being deboned? In the end, Clark didn't get to save himself; some mysterious superpowered figure came to his rescue. Love that shot of the Martian Manhunter — he just stood there for a little bit and then he up and flew away. I suspect we'll be seeing him again, considering he was one of the founding members of the Justice League. And the fact that Clark found an Oreo in the barn... the Martian Manhunter is obsessed with this classic cookie.

Other thoughts:

— While Clark was off on his own mission, Jimmy the Geek helped Lana find her man. He actually stepped up to the plate and contributed to the search and rescue of one Lex Luthor.

— Jimmy was cute, especially with his jealousy of Clark, but at times his relationship with Chloe seems a little too cutesy.

— Is Clark starting to keep Chloe out of the loop?

— Pro-wrestler Batista played the massive Zoner who broke backs and ripped skeletons from bodies.

— The guy who played StaticBronson seemed so familiar. I finally figured out that three weeks ago he was in Supernatural's "Simon Said" episode, where he played another bad guy with special abilities — he was able to control people with his mind. It's such a super-small world, isn't it?

I agree the L/L romance is being shoved down our throats. She has Lex's back even when she knows he's lying to her but she hates Clark just because he didn't tell her everything. She bugs me. I'm glad he didn't save Lex.Now if we can get him to stop saving Lana that would be progress. I also think Lana will lose the baby and probaly shake Lex soon after.

It looks like Lex has finally had it with CK just waltzing into his castle at will and went and got himself some real security. About time. Of course Clark seems like The Invisible Man at times, like when he was just walking around a major crime scene in street clothes and no officials questioned his presence. Ah, love my TV universe, where logic takes a back seat to storytelling.

Really couldn't get into this epi, just way too much Lana for me to enjoy it. She's become SOOOO annoying over the years, with all her intense overreactions to just about any situation. She just kills the flow of the show for me. There must be a way to send her off to The Zone. Now that would be nice. Yea. Good times.

On the plus side Lois was MIA. That's a good thing, right?

Loved that scene of the Zoner swinging that spine over his head. I'll never look at osso bucco the same after that display.

No, not seeing Lois is a bad thing! Why does everyone rip on her? She is part of the story! Live with it! Like It!

Did not like the episode. Clark needs to go to training. He needs to learn what he can do. How many times is it going to take getting his ass kicked before he uses all his powers?

What is up with the Oreos? Don't know this guy.

And Lana. She CAN NOT pull off this tough girl persona. I laugh and shake my head everytime. It is funny. Kristin/Lana needs to eat something too. She is getting way to skinny. Maybe Lana will get an eating disorder and she will be off the screen for awhile.

I did not enjoy this episode much... I did LOVE Clark choosing to go to Seattle over helping Lana/Lex. Screw them and their crazy relationship. Lana's even yelling back at Chloe now; for example, when they were both searching 33.1 with Jimmy Lana repeatedly shot down Chloe's insistance that maybe Lex was lying to her.

Really, I can only see this going one of two ways: 1) Lex causes Lana to get hurt; Lana dies; baby lives or 2) lex causes Lana to get hurt; baby dies; Lana finally wakes up, gets a clue, and drops Lex like a bad habit.

Batista and the spine was enjoyable. Quite disturbing. The Martian Manhunter appearance was great. Loved that, but will he appear in the Justice episode? Hm...

Is this the Lana/Lex show or isnt it suppose to be the Clark Kent show? I would have loved to see more of Clark Kent and the Zoner story versus Lex getting kidnapped yet again.

Clark get into training mode ASAP! And the writers need to let him fly.

I agree with kelel. Lana playing the tough girl role is laughable. Kruek is more convincing as the sweet Lana Lang.

Yeah, like the others I felt like the whole Lana/Lex thing was a total play on our emotions to get us to feel something for them. So not!!

I am more interested in how some of the other Justice League-rs are being introduced. I thought it was cute at the end when Clark found the oreo in the barn. I can just imagine the Martian Manhunter munching on his oreos and watching Clark from some dark corner of the barn. Kinda' like ET, from the movie when he was in the closet watching thru the blinds eating M&M's. (in the book it was reese's pieces)

To kelel21220: In the original post it was mentioned that the Martian Manhunter likes Oreo's.

I can't wait to see if Ollie, Clark and the Martian Manhunter hook up and meet? Will they bring back the guy who played the Flash, Aquaman and the robot guy......oooohhhh I can't remember his characters name. The young black guy....some one help me out!! :)

I am sooooooooo sick of the Lana/Lex thing. I mean, she hated him while she was with Clark but as sooh as she and clark end she is in "love" with him. It's so ridiculous. Kristin Kruek cannot pull off this whole thing and I am sick of her whiny crap all the time. Let's get the sweet Lana back who loved Clark. And why does Clark always get the short end of the stick? He sacrificed his dad to save her and now he has to watch her with Lex. So unbelievable.

This episode seemed really disjointed, but maybe that was purposefully done. It showed a real division between Clark and Lana/Lex. Clark's finally growing up and realizing that there's a greater calling for him -- agreeably he needs to return to the fortress and find out what he's truly capable of. As with all great stories, a backstory can sometimes be less exciting but lend itself to the ultimate understanding of where the story is going. I do agree, more Clark and less melodrama!!

So considering that in Superman 3 when Clark goes back to Smallville, Lana is single with a child and does not tell Clark who the father is, I am assuming that now we know that answer. I just wonder how Lex manages to get out of the picture while Lana stays in Smallville and has his baby….

Seriously, to me, this seems like the last season of Smallville. They're moving Clark more towards to his calling of helping others in the world, not just his little clique. Lois is moving more towards being a good journalist and now Lana's pregnant. And yeah, seriously, why does she put so much faith in Lex when she hated him and didn't trust him for years?! I hate their relationship; it makes me cringe…. Nothing made me cringe more than last week though when Lionel and Martha almost kissed.

The robot guy is Cyborg or Victor.

Favorite scene; Martian Manhunter flying off, he morphs into his costume as he flies away...had to watch it in slow-mo, but well worth the effort!!

This show seemed to be 75% Lexana and 25% Clark. That sucked! More Clark!!

I don't care about Lexana...she's a complete tool.

So now we've got Martian Manhunter (J'onn Jones), Flash (Bart Allen), Cyborg (Victor "I forgot"), Aquaman (A.C.), Green Arrow (Ollie Queen) - Justice is gonna be fan-frakkin-tastic!!

Oddly, this episode was probably my favorite one of this season. And that's odd because episodes where Chloe has a lot of story usually bore me.

But Chloe and Jimmy are not only cute together, but they really click! And no, Jimmy is no Clark but he has his capabilities too. What I truly found interesting was that Clark wasn't interested in helping Lex....even if that meant Lana would have peace of mind. Hopefully this means the man is getting over her.

I like Lexana. And I just want Lex to change, even though we know this whole relationship is doomed. Lex looked so happy about the baby and I do think he tries, even if he is a bit sneaky. The lack of Clark in some of these episodes has been a bit distressing, but at the same time, he is so riddled with guilt and sad looking, that for this episode, maybe his not being around was best.

I agree with most of the previous posts, the Lex/Lana storyline is insulting. As I figure it, Lex told Lana about the spaceship, and then has lied to her about EVERYTHING else. So, he must be the most honest person she has ever met. What about him seems trustworthy to anyone, let alone someone spending time with him? So, I hate the storyline and hate that the poor rationale for the stupid storyline. And while I am ranting, what is so great about her? Lex is a uber-rich playboy and she is a waifish, baggage-laden, just out of high-school chick. Other than to annoy Clark, what is the reason for his devotion to her? She has hated him for most of the last 5 years.

I also hate Jimmy. They establish that he is stupid(naive) enough to think Lex is working the the Egyptians, but now he is brilliant enough to use 1950's technology to not only hear Lex in the alternate world, but mess with knobs on a radio to bring him back to our frequency? I realize we are supposed to take things with a grain of salt in this world, but come on...

God, I cannot wait til they start the Justice League and hopefully ignore the Lex/Lana storyline. This show used to be really fun to watch and it is getting harder. The Justice League should bring back the fun.

To answer the Oreo's question. in the comics Martian Manhunter has had an almost obession with oreos. One of the funniest things was in the comics where he went in to a store. The clerk asked could he help him. MM asked do you have any oreos? The cleck responded no but we have Hydrox. MM looks all sad and says it not the same thing.

end geek moment.

First off, I agree with the poster who said any episode without Lois is at least mildly enjoyable. I don't know why, but I just can never get into Erica Durance as Lois. She looks twice her age.
I also agree about the Lex and Lana story. It seemed like filler to fillout an episode otherwise about 10 minutes long. I mean, just how many scenes did we actually have with Clark? And on top of that, we just have this sudden, mysterious ending. Don't get me wrong, I thought it was pretty cool "seeing" the Martian Manhunter. But that's only because I read the spoilers beforehand and knew who it was. When I read about the Oreos thing, it sounded only vaguely familiar and I probably would have had no idea who it was, if not for Kryptonsite.
Now, on the flipside, Lex and Lana don't bug me nearly as much as Jimmy and Chloe. Jimmy seems like a plot contrivance, cloaked in a familiar character, to keep Chloe busy and get her away from pinning after Clark. He pops up out of nowhere (for all the time they've spent together this season at the Planet, they never ran into each other the whole year Chloe was working there prior?)the writers turn an off hand remark about Chloe's first time with a boy named Jimmy, and an allusion to the iconic character becomes literal. But more than that, they just hook up; and I just don't see the why. I pretty much hate when writers just throw two people together, because they want it to happen; but they don't have the patience to build it up so that the audience wants it to happen.
Don't even get me started on the whole "training" deal, with Clark. It took a moment for the thought to sink in, to realize they could possibly intend for Clark to go into the fortress and come out several years later, dressed as Superman, ala the movie. I can't stress how incredibly stupid that would be. The movie is the only instance where Clark became Superman like that, or learned how to best use his powers. Doing it like that, makes it seem more like Clark was sent to earth with the intention of becoming Superman; and that's not the reason.
And it also, only serves to perpetuate the mistaken perception, demonstrated by another poster, that Smallville follows the same continuity as the movies. It's bad enough they go and kill of Jonathan; when for the last twenty some odd years, Jonathan Kent has been alive and well, long after Clark became Superman.
