Steven and Laura

I missed the pilot episode and ABC.com does not have the episode on-line to view. I am wondering about Steven and Laura. When they showed "previously on..." it seemed like he took a picture of her on the steps and it he became alive. Can someone tell me the details of their connection?

In "Masquerade" they were right next to each other twice (trick-or-treating and the party)but they never acknowledged each other.

He was just walking around taking pictures and the he saw laura who was crying in the street then he took her picture. thay have never talked.
