saving grace

I love Holly Hunter so I wanted to like this show, but Grace is a despicable character. I can't find anything sympathetic about her. I understand she was harmed in childhood--does that make the rest of her life and what she does to others excusable? Not in real life it doesn't. Why should it in TV?James Woods plays a jerk with a heart on Shark--he's brilliant at his job and is trying to be a good father--you hate and admire him and I love that! Tony was a sociopath but loved his kids and realized he needed therapy. You could admire that too. Grace has no redeeming qualities of any kind--what, she loves her dog? Please! If you knew someone like this in real life you'd be telling them they'll be dead within a couple of years and no one will come to their funeral. She hates her family--never has anything good to say about them--she's contributing to her partner's marital self destruction, she hypocritically judged her aunt, hurt her grandfather, is a bad influence on her nephew, and feels superior to her sister and mother all while lying and cheating and drinking and whoring around. She seems to have no sense of personal responsibility at all. She shows up for work and is good at her job. So what? So she has an angel that talks to her, but she never listens to him; without some impact, it's just a meaningless gimmick. She never listens to her own conscience apparently either. When it comes on my husband leaves the room. I'm going to start doing the same.

Just for those that are unaware the show is called "Saving Grace" for a reason. All of her qualities that people are snubbing their noses at, are the very reason why "Earl" has to SAVE Grace.. My daughter who is almost 18 love to watch the show, and I applaud Holly Hunter on a greatly written show, and the characters are great. The reason I started to watch the show was because of Leon Rippy who is an amazing actor, so it turned out to be a good show and those who stuck up for the explicit scenes, you only have to push the button on the remote.....Devoted Saving Grace fan

This person must have read my mind. I guess I'm just watching the show to see the beefcake, and secretly hoping that the writers get their heads out of their butts long enough to see how boring and predictable Grace is and, what a skank. Maybe Holly Hunter can go crazy and just go off the script and act like lady with some self respect. I've been kicked in the face, had my finger bit off and bucked off my horse more times than I can count. So I think its possible to hang tough and still act like a lady. Go for it Grace just throw coution to the wind and do something nice

Yes Grace is a despicable character. She sleeps with anybody that is around. Drinks way too much. Shows no concern for anyone but herself. But isn't that the point? Why would she need "saving" if she was more of a "lady"?? I feel like she will get to be better as Earl influences her more. That seems to be the point of the show, to Save Grace.

I agree with your uptake of this show. Watched it the first show and haven't watched it again. It is terrible as far as I am concerned

We know Grace needs "saving". It's just that we dislike her character so much, that we don't care if she's saved. That's the point. End of the series.

I really disagree with just about everything you have said about Saving Grace.

First off - the point of the whole show is "Is Grace worth saving from damnation"? That is one of the driving points of the show. How can someone so damaged and so morally corrupt be worth saving? Yet I argue the fact that Grace is only damaged on the surface and that she has many redeeming qualities about her that Earl is trying to bring out. Let me start with just a few:

She has an immense love of her nephew Clay, who's mother (Grace's sister) who died during the Oklahoma bombings. She is very close to him, and also try's to teach him the difference between right and wrong.

She is very loyal to the police department and her fellow officers. She knows the moral difference between right and wrong and she is doing good, helping victims and supporting her fellow officers. She always has time for a conversation about a loved one, or a sick pet. She does care!

I love this show and I think that Holly Hunter is doing a great job! Grace is a very complex character and at first glance she does seem vile, and morally bankrupt but the good in Grace is not far from the surface.

The concept of God is what bothers me here, Grace has been given a second chance at improving her spiritual lot and she blows it back in Gods face once too many times, in a blantly fiendish FU. I refuse to believe your going to keep getting divine intervention, even in tv land. So this is someones messed up concept of a dog eared angel and even worse diety. Sorry I watched it.

First of all, yes Grace is a character that on the surface looks like a terrible person, but isn't that what this show is about? God wants to save her, redeem her, and won't ever give up on that. To us mere mortals she looks beyond redemption, but what makes God, God, is that He will never give up on anybody, Grace included. This is a rough and gritty show but over the course of the season we have come to get to know Grace and her situation in life better. She, as anybody, deserves redemption and it's up to the individual to receive that redemption from the Grace of God. Has she made any progress throughout this season? Yes she has. I'm glad that this show will be back next summer and that we'll be able to see Grace continue to struggle just as we all do. Is she someone I'd like to hang out with? Would I want to continue to try to help her when she rejects my every attempt? Do I feel she is worth saving? Maybe not, but then I'm not God. He's not giving up on her and that's what this fine show is all about. If she was anything but what she is, a lot of people might suggest she doesn't need saving. By making her the character she is there is no doubt that she needs saving. I want to watch her struggle and maybe understand my own a little better. This is a great show.

Holly Hunter needs to put some meat on her skeleton, she looks terrible. She's playing a tough roll, but remember folks, it's not real, it's makebelieve.

Unfortunately, I disagree. I believe you are missing the point of this show. The programs you mentioned do have the qualities you listed, but I don't see God being portrayed in them. Yes, Grace is not the most respectable person, but I believe this exhibits that no matter how imperfect we are God has a plan for reaching each and every one of us. I think it's quite commendable that a network is willing to take on the challenge of portraying anything to do with God. Two thumbs up to the cast members and network. Keep up the good work....

I agree that this program shows how much God loves all people and His desire to save all people, but should Christians be watching such stuff? I'm not sure God would be too pleased with this type of "evangelism" although I doubt that's what this is. To me it's just another way of getting sex, swearing and whatever else into the already distorted minds of so many people, including the our youth, who if you remember, will be leading this country soon. Do we desire looser and looser morals for this society? This type of entertainment is barely impossible to avoid these days, apart from watching Christian television, which on occasion is even suspect. There is enough "freedom" in the entertainment field and it's only getting worse. Using the name of our Lord in vain is a slap in His face, no matter what the program is trying to convey. Praise God for Animal Planet, the Golf Channel and the Weather Channel for not letting their guards down...yet.

Just a suggestion of course, but instead of you both leaving the room, why don't you change the channel? I mean, surely there is something else to watch at that time. I like the show but I don't take any of the religous stuff as gospel. I mean, we all have our beliefs and some tv show surely is not going to change our minds. At least I hope not. It is fiction and for entertainment. It is just some writers idea and he probably does not believe it himself. I think the public always likes to see something that says we are going to be saved no matter how bad we are. Wishful thinking. You don't really think that all public defenders give a damn about their clients do you. On tv they do. It is a show to entertain us, not educate us. They have something called "documentaries" for that.

I wanted to like this show too as a long-time fan of Holly Hunter. But I agree with the original post.

I've barely been able to watch an entire episode but decided to last night.

I'm not getting how we're supposed to have compassion for someone who seems lucid enough when doing the stupid, self-destructive things she does.

And what's with her and the married guy? Are we supposed to "get it" because they're Okies who go way back. And Grace is really a good person because she does her day job--which is, catches the bad guys.

Not that I'll be tuning in to watch the show again but I am curious to know how many seasons it will take to save Grace. It seems even divine timing doesn't move that slow. For God sakes, she has her own personal angel telling her what to do. It's not like she has to guess like the rest of us.

I've barely been able to watch an entire episode but decided to last night.

I'm not getting how we're supposed to have compassion for someone who seems lucid and intelligent enough when doing stupid, self-destructive things.

And I'm not buying that toggling back and forth between conflicted mess and Ms. Save OKC from Crime.

And what's with her and the married guy? Are we supposed to "get it" because they're Okies who go way back. And Grace is really a good person because she does her day job, i.e, catch the bad guys.
