October 24, 2006: Don't Kill the Messenger, But.....

Sorry for the lateness, but I realized I should probably make a post concerning the recent news: if you haven’t heard yet, the CW cancelled Runaway last week. Even more disappointing, although there’s a handful of episodes left that haven’t been aired, they’ve chosen to just shelve them and air America’s Next Top Model in the timeslot instead.

I was really starting to get hooked on this show and I’ll miss Runaway: it was a surprisingly effective mix of serialized thriller and family drama, and pulling off just one of those on a regular basis is tough enough. I won’t try to second-guess whether or not pulling the plug was justified (the ratings were pretty dismal), but I still think it’s a shame that it couldn’t be afforded more time for an audience build. Maybe in today’s overstuffed marketplace if you can’t start strong right from the beginning it’s already too late.

It’s possible that the remaining episodes might be released in some capacity somewhere down the line. It’s not unheard of for a quickly-cancelled series to be released on a DVD box-set (think Wonderfalls or Point Pleasant), especially since the unaired episodes make a great selling point. I’m not saying that it will happen, but it is a possibility. As long as they keep this message thread up and running, I will be sure to make another post if I hear anything.

Thanks for reading and hopefully you’ll join me on my new blog for the ABC drama Day Break, when it premieres in mid-November.

Jack, I agree with you. Unfortunately, the CW is taking a page out of the WB's book and spending all of its advertising budget on "young and hip" rather than spreading it around a little more.

The move to Sunday night might have helped both this show and 7th Heaven, but by moving the show so quickly - and with so little TV advertising about the change - it's hurt both shows.

I feel as if the CW should put Runaway back on the air. I also feel that there really is no point of having America's Next Top Model on the CW. Dont get me wrong the show is good for the people on it but if your not on it then who really cares whose going to be the next top model. I bet not even 20% of the US could name at least five models. If they do not decide to put Runaway back on the air at least air the rest of the episodes that were made. Please consider putting it back on the air. It was even my 12 year old daughter's favorite tv series.
