Episode Recap: 9

CBS ought to send every viewer who caught this most recent episode of Pirate Master a gold coin. After canceling this ratings disappointment, those who did follow this show now have to log on to CBS.com to catch streaming video of the remaining few new episodes. Given what could have happened — being forever left to wonder at the outcome like, say, fans of Invasion, Reunion, or Threshold — we few fans should be grateful that we can at least see the full run of the show. Watching this episode, however, I kept asking myself why? Why pull the show now when this episode involved so many tweaks to the game that it is now at its most interesting? Why do they ever let Louie do the puzzles? Why did Christa bid for the royal pardon?

First off, the changes: Ben and Jay have been stripped of their officer statuses, courtesy of the host. (Coincidence that this move comes right after the ghost pirate debacle?) Now these former officers are both eligible for a black mark, but they can now also vote for mutiny without having to sacrifice their cushy positions. Without the "Triad," Azmyth, whom I now want to call Captain Cook since he has taken over Jupiter's kitchen duties, is alone (and lonely) at the helm. Going forward, only two black marks will be issued. The Royal Pardon expires after this Pirates Court and the captain gets to keep all the treasure. The best change of all came when the Black Crew, consisting of nemesis Laurel, conspirator Nessa and Louie, lost the challenge, thereby unseating Azmyth. However, this loss was due mostly to Louie and his inability to unlock the shackles. Again, I ask, why is Louie anywhere near these puzzles?

The ever-scheming Jay immediately nominated Christa as first female captain. He then immediately started working on her to put up Kendra and Azmyth — one a revenge nomination, the other a strategic nomination. To top it off, he tried to swindle Kendra out of her Royal Pardon sale. He may be the best pirate on this ship.

I like that Christa, aka Sweet Beard, managed to issue black marks and at the same time deflect any blame by using the good old democratic vote ploy. What I don't understand is why she wasted money actually bidding on a pardon that would be useless thereafter? In the end, she got Azmyth cut adrift with a unanimous vote that only cost her $12,500 of her generous $50K treasure. A word about the monthlong captain, Azmyth, whom we must thank for making the show entertaining. He was enthusiastic. He fully embraced the roles of pirate and captain. He was ruthless, he was fun and in the end a bit delusional in refusing to believe his minions wouldn't turn on him. He should have bid on that pardon.

All in all it was not a bad show. We got a mutiny of sorts. We got a chuckle at four-time black-spot recipient Kendra's odd speech to the crew, and we got a new set of rules.

It will be interesting to see if the crew turns on Christa as they have with the previous captains, but even more interesting will be whether the viewers turn on CBS for cancelling the show.

Yet another show that they have cancelled on us prematurely, but luckily, we can watch it online now (virtually commercial free). I really enjoyed this episode. Azmyth was annoying with his fake accent and all but as he was cut adrift, I did feel sad to see him go. Christa is a lot smarter than people give her credit for, however I too was confused as to why she bid 10K on the Royal Pardon. Jay looks like the one to watch as he is working overtime in the scheming department. All in all, the show is picking up steam and looks like it will be an interesting finale.

Thanks for posting this Rhoda, for those of us unable to watch online!!!

I'm glad that Azmyth isn't captain, but I'm sorry he got voted off. But I do agree that Jay is the real "pirate" on this ship!

Well I've already done my b*%#^ing about the cancellation so we'll move on to the show :)

This was a roller coaster ride of an episode. Lots of twists and turns and flips to keep up with. As much as I can't stand Jay as a person [on the show], he does make a fabulous and unrepentent pirate. Christa didn't have the guts to follow through on his plan, but I'm sure I couldn't have done that either especially since Kendra hung around.

I think you misunderstood the split, Rhoda. Christa only kept 12500 of her treasure, same as all the red crew. Jay never suggested that they not get their cut, just that Kendra be screwed out of hers so Christa could keep an extra 10K. The plan was to tell Kendra she'd buy the pardon, but then not buy it thus stealing her 10K portion of the treasure. Christa just couldn't face such a sneaky theft and so followed through on her promise to bid on the pardon. I don't think Jay would have been able to do it directly either so I certainly don't hold it against her. But I don't think that Christa should have split the treasure evenly. She should have given her crew 10K or even 12K each and kept the rest for herself , the captain should get a little more, otherwise there is no payoff for the risk of captaincy unless you count a little more food and a plusher bed as worth the risk and I don't.

She did handle herself as Captain very well though, very diplomatic. Its gonna be pretty hard for anyone to find fault with her at least so far.

With Louie and the shackle puzzle.....I think he did that on purpose so , so the black team would lose, and Az wouldn't be pirate anymore. But someone should of taken over after the other team completed figured out the shackle puzzle.

I also don't like Jay. He is a sleaze bucket. I hope the others figure out about his sceaming. And why do they keep Kendra around all the time?

Im glad they final picked Christa as the captain. I hope she wakes up to Jay's sceaming.

Hi Rhoda:

Thank you for continuing to blog Pirate Master, especially for those who won't be able to watch it online.

I was so disgusted with CBS's decision, that I e-mailed them to respectfully request that they reconsider their decision and air the remaining episodes. It may not do any good, but I felt better.

Your comment that those who got to view the show should get a gold coin sure rang true with me. The show did not air in Sacramento for some reason - maybe they pulled it from the schedule right after the network pulled the plug. I initially thought maybe the DVR (which is set to tape all new episodes of this show) had been cut off by my daughter, but I checked the scheduled list and there was nothing - and if she had done it, it would have been lined out. Very rude IMO.

The cancellation totally stinks, and to top it all off, when I tried to watch it online, it showed the first three parts, but not the last one, so I missed the vote off. I've tried reloading numerous times, but the last part never loads in.

I thought it was nice that the Captain didn't screw Kendra over out of her share of the loot, and I place Azymyth's being cut adrift solely on his own shoulders. He should have bid on that pardon, if anyone on that crew could afford it, it was him. Oh well, he didn't leave empty handed, anyway.

Lady Bug, what email address did you use? Asked if anybody had one in the original post about the show walking the plank and gave everyone the phone number for NY's CBS Broadcasting, it's 212-975-4321 and a "person" answers from 10-11:30 and 2-3:30 (sorry, ask for the Programming Dept). They told me it was poor ratings, didn't know whether enough complaints would mean a return ala Jerico but I'm hoping LOTS of complaints could MAYBE do something. Told them to read the blogs on tvguide.com to see how many people were pissed by their decision.

Anyway, Rhoda thanks for the blog. I tried watching it on a friend's computer and though better than on mine it still was so slow I gave up after 15 minutes./

Sorry Azmyth got cut adrift - I too would have liked him not to be the captain anymore but to stay on the ship - but guess that couldn't have worked.

Jay's too smart and too scheming and HOPE it backfires on him though will have to wait for next week's blog to find out what happens. And a bloody AARGGH!!

Rhoda, or somebody please, how did they strip Ray and Ben of their posts? Did they say from now on the captain rules alone (because of the number of people left) or did they just do it and leave no explanation? Great twist and wish I could have seen it. Does it mean too that all future captains are on their own? Makes it much easier to mutiny and cut them loose. I think, as another poster did, Louie took his time on PURPOSE to unseat Asmyth. I'm looking forward to next week's blog but not as much as I would be if the show were on and I was going to see it myself. Boo hoo. And Lawler, tell Asmyth in spite of the fact he started getting on our bad side I bet most of us will miss him!

Hey everyone, I'll be talking to Azmyth this afternoon so if there's anything you're dying to know let me know.

Dorjean: Jay and Ben were demoted without any fanfare. Cameron just congratulated the final 8 on being the final eight and then went on to explain that at this point in the game things were changing and that there would be no more officers (so give me your coats!). All future captains will be without officers. It was only after the treasure had been found that Cameron stated that the Captain gets the whole booty

As far as Louie, it didn't occur to me that he had purposefully thrown the challenge. (Haven't I been crowing about that for some time now!) I guess I didn't think he had it in him. I just thought he was bad at the challenges! LOL

Hi Dorjean:

I went to CBS.com yesterday and there was a link to sign up for the CBS newsletter. On that page, there a place where you could send an e-mail to CBS. When I checked this morning, the e-mail link was gone.

However, if you do click the Pirate Master Message Board area, there are some viewers that are trying to start a petition requesting CBS air the remaining Pirate Master episodes.

Vickiejean also blogs on Pirate Master in the Community Blog area on the TV Guide website. Her blogs are titled Reality Bites. She blogs on several reality shows, to include Pirate Master. She has committed to watch the series online and post a blog each week. There is a blog already written for Tuesday's show, so you can check it out.

Well after some prompting by friends on another blog - I did watch enough of the episode to see just how stunning Christa looked when AZ was cut adrift. I would have become a pirate long ago if I could work under a captain like Christa!

I am furious that cbs has canceled pirates. Especially since their are only a few episodes left. Not fair!!!
