Episode Recap: 10

I watched Episode 10 of Pirate Master online at my desk today, making the random note: Nessa, Kendra, Louie = weak team; Jay Christa Ben — New “triad”; Jay = snake. Stuff like that. I had to laugh at myself though, because there I was taking notes to blog a show that was no longer on the air. Why exactly was I doing this? I still don’t know. I blame it on an odd quirk of mine — that strange compulsion I have to finish something that I’ve started. So, here I am discussing that Titanic of reality shows (probably with myself). This is the task I have set before myself. Here I go.

I bet that if this episode had aired, a lot of folks would have really enjoyed tonight’s show. The challenge was great. It was grueling. I don’t know if they are getting longer as the show progresses or if they just seem that way now that there are fewer players. Regardless, the challenge was great. People actually had to use some smarts to figure out the "bottle in the pipe" clue. There was the arduous trek hauling buckets of water up the mountain. There was a dip into frigid waters beneath a scene-stealing waterfall. This challenge was a toughie! My one beef was that, as usual, it only takes one team to figure out a clue since the other team just steals their answer and proceeds to win. Ben, I’m talking about you. Oh, I have another beef: I hate that they use dive masks to hunt for the underwater clues. That’s so not done in true pirate circles. Anyway, kudos to Louie for trying to yank the treasure out of Christa’s hands. A true pirate move if I’ve ever seen one.

As for Kendra... what is the matter with this girl that she can’t hoof it during the challenges? With her it’s always: "Oh, it’s a steep hill, I can’t make it." "Oh, the water is cold, I can’t look for the clue." "Oh, I can’t swim." We’re getting down to the wire here and some players have earned their keep, and others... not so much. I, like the rest of the crew, have had enough of Kendra. Plus she’s kind of a downer.

Christa, on the other hand is really winning me over. I honestly didn’t pay her much mind before she became captain. There were weeks, even, where she never had a sound bite so you can’t blame me for missing her. Especially when there were other more vocal players to draw my attention. (Yes, I’m still mourning the loss of Joe Don.) However, I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that with the long-coat-over-bikini look, she may have started a new trend in beach cover-up wear.

At this point in my workday, I had to stop watching and tend to other matters, and since I can’t access the show at home, I’ll have to continue this blog tomorrow after I’ve seen the end of the episode. This may be a first: the cliff-hanger blog. Or maybe it’s a sign that it’s time for me to get over that compulsion I mentioned earlier, you know the one about finishing things... sorry folks, but it’s a new world.

I would, however, like to express my condolences to the family of Cheryl Kosewicz, one of Pirate Master’s first “officers,” who passed away earlier this week.

- RECAP PART TWO -
I appreciate all of you who are still reading this blog. Here comes part two. I left off at the point where we found out how much treasure captain sweetbeard took in. $40K, which she split evenly among her four-player team. The sweetbeard moniker, as used by Jay, is a little forced. It’s like he’s really angling for something (anything) he can use to establish a close relationship with the current captain. Christa seems to be buying it though. She continues to listen, even call upon, Jay for counsel. Why? She has to realize that he can’t be trusted, right? I hope so. Christa worked the crew as she did last week for black spot nominations handing them out to Kendra for the fifth time and Nessa who had recently been called into the inner circle – or so she thought. When she was unanimously voted out and even before in her speech to the crew, Nessa delivered a punch worthy of her pirate title. I just love that she called out Jay, Ben and Christa for stabbing her in the back. I wish Nessa had called Kendra out for rolling her eyes during Nessa’s speech and for grinning with glee when the vote came back. Either Kendra is getting the JD/Azmyth edit now or she’s really not as nice as she claims to be.

So that’s it. Nessa’s out. Kendra’s off the block for now. Christa is entering her third week as captain. Ben is still there under the radar. Laurel is still Laurel and Jay is one week closer to winning it all.

One last thing. If you do get to download the show, check out that spectacular sunset shot at 5:19 during part four. Beautiful.

Rhoda, you aren't completely talking to yourself. I thank you for the blog you've posted so far. I too cannot access the show online from either home or work, and I actually liked this one. (should have known, any reality show that I like gets canceled)

I read about Cheryl's death today, and it broke my heart. Next to Christian (I'm a Chiefs fan from way back), I think Cheryl was my favorite player, and I was heartbroken to see her set adrift. My thoughts and prayers are with her family now.

Rhoda, Thank you for continuing this blog. I also want to see how this show ends up but I don't want to watch it on the internet. I would rather read about it in 5-10 minutes than take the time to watch it. I look forward to reading the continuation of your recap!

Why do Jay and Ben think they are still officers? There are no more officers. Krista needs to be very watchful of Jay. He is one of the biggest snakes.

I also loved how Louie was going trying to steal the treasure. That was very piratish of him to do that....(I know thats not a word...so give me a break:-D)

Im going to miss Nessa. She was one tough cookie. I loved her speech at the end. It would of been awesome if she flipped them all off. Thats what I would of done.

I also give my condolences to Cheryl's family and friends over their lost.

I'm with you on watching PM, please keep up the blogs. I think the show gets better with every episode. Even though it irked me that CBS pulled it from the lineup I'm now happy about it. I can watch the new eps at my convenience and commercial free. Ben is a snake and I think everyone is going to figure it out, the three women are all too weak to win. The winner will either be Ben or Christa. So everyone is mentioning Cheryl's passing but I haven't found what happened to her.

TV Addict, read it here in I think a Matt Mittovich item prior to linking on to this but when I went back I couldn't find it (ditto the item about Desparate Housewive's new couple being gay) wonder if TV Guid just pulls items? Anyway unfortunately her boyfriend committed suicide 2 months ago and they found Chrystal on Friday with poor girl having done same thing. How sad.

Thanks Rhoda for your posts - wish I could watch the internet videos - not fair since we were in on it from the beginning when it wasn't that great and then became good and now the best it seems was yet to come. If anybody wants to complain, use this email method ... http://www.cbs.com/info/user_services/fb_global_form.shtml
posted that in last week's column and Lady Bug had told everyone about the Pirate Master site on cbs.com where there is a petition - please sign it - though it may not bring show back we should show CBS how dumb they were!!

Hi Rhoda: Thanks for continuing the Pirate Master blog. We PM fans appreciate this very much.

Hi Dorjean: Thanks for the shout-out. I hope that everyone who's upset with CBS, reaches out and expresses their displeasure over this bone-head move. I'm still disappointed that Pirate Master was pulled. The last two episodes that were not aired on TV were fantastic. I've seen Episode 10 online, but I won't spoil it for those waiting for Rhoda's continued recap.

I would also like to express my sympathies to Cheryl's family, friends, co-workers and the Pirate Master's cast and crew.

Hi everyone,

Hey sorry, but I'm on a quick break from all day meetings so it will be a while before I get back to the blog. Please feel free (though, generally I personally dislike spoilers) to discuss the rest of the show. I'll catch up with you later.

I personally want to that you for posting about PM. I am so frustrated with networks that pull the plug on a show when it is not finished. I would appreciate the fact that it is on CBS.com if I could view it. I am in Canada and we can only view it in the US. Please keep up the good work!

Here is a link about Cheryl.

It floored me when I stumbled across the news, she seemed like such a strong person.

Please keep writing, you are the only way I will know what happens.

Thanks Rhoda, I'll check back for the rest of your blog - don't you dump on us too - we really enjoy your blog even if the show isn't on the air!

Sorry to see Nessa go and really don't follow the thinking at all. What was the point of bringing Nessa into the inner circle for a few hours then dump her at the next vote? I thought the point of bringing her in was to keep her from causing trouble as they dropped all the others. Jay is truly a snake, I could not believe how easily he lied to Nessa's face. But since his behavior jives with my view of a pirate perfectly, I'd have to say he deserves to win. We shall see.

Shocked to hear about Cheryl's death, particularly in that way. She struck me as a very strong lady, but I can't see blaming the show. She chose to do the show, it caused problems with her relationship and now as it aired and her boyfriend was gone, she realized the futility of her decision to fight to do it and regretted the decision. That really isn't the same thing as the show being to blame. Too bad she couldn't come to grips with her pain over his loss or guilt or whatever made her do such a thing. Very sad all around.

I was shocked and saddened at Cheryl's untimely death. Early on, she was my favorite, and I'm amazed at how such a seemingly strong woman would choose that path. My condolences to her family, friends, and all that cared about her.

Again, these episodes are getting better as the challenges do. This was a great challenge requiring all sorts of skills.

I thought the way they brought in Nessa only to cut her was needlessly cruel. It seems to me that they should have just taken their chances to see if she was on a winning or losing team, then cut her.

Jay is playing the best game and deserves to win, but if this show is anything like other elimination shows (like Survivor and Big Brother) the most deserving rarely wins it all. I would, however, like to see Christa win. I love her spirit, and when she slammed her face in the mud before firing the pistol, she just solidified my belief in her.

Could someone please respond to my question that I posted in the comments on episode 9? Once again, I am unable to view anything on CBS.com. I re-installed Windows Media player 9 and the flash drive 8 but still nothing!
