« October Road
We Lived Like Giants
OMG! Tears, rock, bonding, a Boo Radley of sorts and more!
October Road finally came on last night and didn't disappoint. Owen has renewed vigor as he decides that he has to find the mysterious stranger that saved his life. Turns out she's a Paul Revere beer delivery girl and only comes to Sully's bar once every 6 weeks for the delivery. After much discussion and some clever charm from Gabe Diaz; he Aubrey, Nick and Owen are road tripping it to Cradle Bay to see "Sienna" (so named by Aubrey). Commander gets wind of the plan and before you know it he and Ronnie are joining the group.
Turns out mystery girl's name is Jenny and Owen and the group are having no luck in finding her. They luckily catch a picture of her posted at the facility (she's employee of the month) and the decided plan of action is to have Owen leave her a note. The Commander decides that they should make it a night in Cradle Bay and he has plans ready! (The Octopus’s gardens, fried clams, night swimming...) Nick tries to point out that people may have other things to do, not so subtly glancing back at Gabe who still hasn't told Aubrey about his impending leave and gambling troubles. Gabe is all for staying and the rest of the group agrees.
Unfortunately, Octopus’s Gardens is not what the Commander remembered. It reminds Aubrey of a hotel from an old movie, which Ronnie points out was Psycho. (Classy Ronnie, real classy.) The fried clams are horrible and Commander is ready to admit his idea is a failure when the night is saved by a quick swim (Complete with an Owen strip where he takes off everything except his socks!). Meanwhile Aubrey and her dad are bonding (he manages to turn on a Ferris wheel so they can take a spin and talk, while she unleashes years of pent up frustration and hurt) and it seems that for that one night, everything is right with the world.
Eddie becomes the babysitter for Sam so the girls can have their night out. Sam's visit doesn't run smoothly due to his fear of Phil the resident "Boo Radley" of the ridge. Stories of drinking cat blood and wearing suits of human flesh are swirling in Sam's mind and he doesn't want to be left alone when Eddie states he'll make a run for burgers. After a heartfelt talk about second chances Sam agrees to ask Phil for help with his beetle project. He gets to know Phil as a real person versus the monster in his head and actually joins in on an air guitar session.
The girls are living it up at Sully's bar (Janet, Hannah and Pizza Girl) and even get to rehash the ultimate senior prank that Hannah and the guys pulled by stealing the actual Knight of the Ridge and putting it in the cafeteria and then planting the flag of love declaration (that was never found again) on a hill "where the cool seniors" ate. Lucy declares that there was no love like NG and HD. (Obviously Lucy has no idea about Hannah's engagement to Cat.) Janet gets hit on by a cute guy at the bar who not only buys her a beer but challenges her to a dart game. Unfortch after a conversation overheard by Rooster, we find out the guy's true intentions was just to nail Letekka's girl and we are treated to a macho Rooster as he kicks the guy out.
Pizza Girl has a heart to heart with Ikey about wanting to be the "cool" kid back in high school and how she's sure there is another version of herself out there who was just that. Ikey agrees that it would be ideal if there was another him out there, (hopefully one that didn't sleep with his best friend's wife) and we get to see a dance impromptu to "Rock and Roll All Night" by Kiss.
We end our trip to the Ridge with Gabe boarding a bus to Denver (even after his talk with his daughter about his absences), Owen getting a call from Jenny, Hannah throwing away the beloved flag she kept all those years and finally choosing a wedding date, and the Commander talking to the Dean about how he knows that troubled times are coming and he just wanted to share one more night with his boys where they "Lived Like Giants".
Tom Berenger as the Commander is amazing and his speech at the end nearly had me crying. (Fine, I was teared up, I admit it!) I love Sean Gunn as Rooster and his unsung heroics at the bar further has me rooting for him to get with Janet. I loved Eddie and Janet together, but it's obvious that Rooster understands her on a level Eddie never will. How cute was the Sam/Phil rock out? I don't agree with Lucy when she states that "Hannah Daniels will always be the coolest, frickin ever". Well, maybe I agree a little, but Hannah's constant attempts at pushing all of her past with Nick out of the way so that she can finally move on make me want to shake her! If Nick is not the guy for her (and we all know that he is) shouldn't she have figured that out before accepting Cat's proposal? And don't get me started on who Sam's real dad is. Fave lines of the night:
"You know why they call me Rooster? A lot of people think it's because of the hair, nope. You ever see two roosters fight? It ain't that pretty at all. People pay money to see the blood, you know what I mean?"
"If you weren't already Phil's girl my next line would be, 'Boy do I have a dude for you.'"
"Bugs and tennis rackets? I really do have the coolest boyfriend."
Until next week, Roadies.
