You do understand that she is just a character and that everything that happens on that show has been sugar coated to make it look watchable. Officers who work in that unit usually dont last very long and if they do they need serious therapy.

Like Stabler?
Sugar-coated or not, if you are serious about this then maybe you should check out your local police station to see if you can volunteer there. It's what I did, and I can tell you the real thing is much better than what's currently on SVU. What SVU has on now is nowhere near a unit such as this.
I mainly chose this career because of my past is similar to that of a child in a case SVU from a way earlier season. While I feel S8 was an insult to me, S2 is my favorite season because it set me on my path. To that, I am forever grateful. But if they don't cut this crap like I saw in S8, they're going to loose me and maybe others as well.
Let no one, such as the first poster before me, get you down or tell you what it's really like and discourage you. It's better to get any info you want directly from the source itself. Ever heard of the "Horse's mouth?" This applies to anything in life. If you really want to do this, then go and do it and anything that gets in your way, well run it over. It's your life. Remember, your parents take care of you for twenty years and then government takes care of you after you retire. You just need to take care of yourself for 40 years.
