LOCI and the effect of the Writers Guild strike
According to the LA Times, LOCI has filmed 10 of 22 episodes and is on hiatus now, as 12,000 members of the Writers Guild (WGA) went on strike Monday.
Those 12,000 include LOCI's writing staff. Showrunner Warren Leight (who's head writer as well as LOCI executive producer)signed a full page ad in Variety promising he would not write -- nor would he pressure his staff to write -- during the WGA strike. That means no new programs in production until writers get a deal from the television industry bigwigs.
Not good for us LOCI fans of course. But we can turn the bad news into something meaningful. If you sympathize with striking LOCI writers --or if you simply love Vincent D'Onofrio as Bobby Goren and will miss him in new episodes -- you can show it in a meaningful way. Rene Balcer, co-creator of LOCI, is trying to create a library for poor children in Africa and Asia in the name of Bobby's TV mother, Frances Goren, who was a librarian. He's promised to match every dollar (from $5+) contributed at http://www.roomtoread.org/donate
It seems the appropriate thing to do at a time when we may all be turning to books(and not TV rerun after rerun after rerun)while the WGA strike goes on. To make sure your donation is matched by Mr. Balcer, all you need to do is write (in the special instructions section on the donation page) "For the Frances Goren Library Project, per Rene Balcer."
It's a really well-run charity too. Not much goes to overhead -- you can check that out at the independent charity monitoring site http://www.charitynavigator.org
Books for poor kids who don't have a library of their own, and no hope of getting one -- I can't think of a better way to show what it really means to be a fan of VDO/Bobby Goren and LOCI, and also to show appreciation for the wonderful LOCI writers whose work makes the show possible.
Please join me.
