May 8, 2007: Bombshell

Well, this one was pretty much what I expected — some really bad Anna Nicole Smith impersonation (not that there’s really a good Anna Nicole impersonation) and a few murder suspects in the form of “fictionalized” versions of the late Playmate’s various hangers-on. And, of course, a little limoncello for taste.

Having seen all of “Bombshell,” I feel exactly the same way I did seeing the clips last week: There was just no reason this episode needed to be made. I don’t think Criminal Intent viewers are big tabloid-news followers (i.e., they probably don’t care who the father of Anna Nicole’s baby was) — and if any of you actually are, then this was just a rehash of yesterday's news. Basically, a no-win proposition for all concerned.

So how in the name of all that is criminal and intent did they manage to attract not one but two decent guest stars to this mess? OK, three, if you count Kristy Swanson, but she was on Skating with Celebrities, so, you know.... But why would alterna-comedian David Cross risk tarnishing his indie cred for this? Why would the man who directed The Last Picture Show take time out of his filmmaking schedule to play Hugh Hefner?

Needless to say, I’ve got pretty much nothing good to say about “Bombshell.” Oh, wait, one thing: the only decent line of the night went to Eric Bogosian of all people, who wondered at all the TV coverage the death of “Anna Nicole” was receiving: “Am I missing something? When did this woman become an icon? When did this show become an E! True Hollywood Story?” (OK, that last part was mine, but you know he was thinking it.)

Well, why don’t we all just move on and forget this ever happened....

Next week:: I’ve never been the biggest Roy Scheider fan (Jaws notwithstanding), but that scene with Goren going all Stabler on him has me dying to see next week’s episode. And make sure to reset your DVRs, TIVOs or VCRs for the show’s move to Monday nights, because I know none of you will want to miss this episode with its — can you believe it? — original story line!

Well, I didn't think I was going to care for this particular episode of CI considering the subject matter. I have been mystified with the continued interest with Anna Nicole Smith (and I loved Bogosian's line about wondering how Lorelei became an icon because that is exactly how I feel about ANS). What I didn't expect was how disturbed I would be by this episode. The scene where the sister was holding the baby over the side of the building really bothered me. The shot of the baby and the street below was a bit too realistic for me.
I also didn't find any of the people involved in this story interesting - just sad and pathetic. I can't even say I enjoyed the performances, not even David Cross who is usually very good (loved him in Arrested Development). So although this was a disapointing episode I wasn't expecting much and in that respect, I guess I got exactly what I expected.

Splish splash, the shark jumpeth. By the way everyone looked - sheepishly po'd - in that ep, apparently I wasn't the non-enthusiast. I've always felt that this is the strongest cast of all of the current L&Os [oh, how I miss Lenny], but it's sad to see them burdened with this tepid nonsense. [Though there was a perverse delight in watching Peter reprising his role as the Honeymeister].

I continue to think that these episodes with Logan and his partner-of-the-season just don't mesh well with what the original concept of Criminal Intent has always been about: Goren. I want them to go back to us knowing who killed whoever and watching Goren play his cool mind games and make the baddie crumble in the interregation room. I love Goran/Eames and though I have nothing against Chris Noth, he ain't no Goren and definately Bogosain is a big yawn.

This episode was embarassing, but I will always tune in, especially since earlier in the season we were allowed to know more about Goren's personal life.

Thanks Goodness the new Monday slot for this show is after "24".

Though I haven't seen every Ci episode, this one was the worst I've ever seen. I've said it before, but L&O needs to cut back or even stop completely with the "ripped from the headlines" stuff. And if CI is indeed on the bubble and this was a last ditch attempt to save themselves, I'm guessing last night helped make NBC's decision a whole lot easier.

I thought it was interesting seeing the press secretary from "Commander In Chief" (Ever Carradine) as Lorelai's deranged sister.
