March 18, 2007: At a Crossroads
Goldfrapp. Awesome.Guest.Appearance. Definitely the best since Heart played an acoustic "Crazy on You" last season.
Surprisingly, my favorite scene of this evening was the main Tina-Bette scene. As bitch-on-wheels as they've both been throughout the last two seasons, I enjoy any minute we get that reminds us why we've loved both these characters since Season 1. I'm also happy that they were able to be really candid with each other and for once not have the scene break into hostility and a parting of ways. I don't know that I ever want them to get back together, but I do enjoy them as... well... as family. They share a child, they share a very complicated history, they're family forever because of Angelica. So I'm glad to see that they're working past the hurt and bitterness and treating each other more like family now.
Also, Tina was right about Bette and Jodi; I do believe they're the perfect match. It's good that Bette feels challenged by a partner that is so strong, but it's also a really tough road for her, so she'll have to decide whether she wants comfort or challenge. Now that Jodi's left, I wonder if Bette will do everything she can to get her back, or if she'll just retreat to Tina (Jodi = challenge, Tina = comfort). I hope she tries to get Jodi back because selfishly, I love Marlee Matlin and I love that character.... I want to see her back next season. And I want to see Bette evolve as a person.
I feel so bad for Tasha and Alice. They are so good for each other, but Tasha's career is so volatile, and she's obviously pretty frakked up from her first experience in Iraq. After watching the season-finale previews, I wonder if Alice is going to try to convince Tasha to abandon her post? It should be interesting to see how that story winds up in the season finale. As I'd written last week, that story could potentially be one of the main cliff-hangers next week.
Max. I hated what his boss and coworkers did to him while he was "on vacation" (talk about hitting below the belt), and I'm so proud of him for leaving. On the one hand, it seems like leaving makes "them" win, but... come on, would Max truly be happy and accepted there? No. Not after taking a stand and being honest about his transition. He will be so much better off working independently for The Chart.... I just hope that Alice can pay him enough.
The love scene between Max and Grace was very, very cool, too. I really like seeing him finally connect with somebody intimately; he's had a lonely road for quite some time, now. Next week's previews seem to indicate that he may not get the surgery after all. I'm looking forward to seeing where Max's journey this season winds up in the finale. Oh, and I loved how he shook everyone's hands and said something nice to each person when he resigned. He was a bigger man than every man added up together in that room.
My big laugh-out-loud moment tonight was when Bette was reading "Lez Girls" in bed, and kept cursing Jenny out. The best line was, "That's not even frakking grammatically correct." That really says a million things about Jenny's writing, doesn't it? I'm thinking that things are going to be pretty ugly with Jenny by the season finale. And oh! All during last week's episode, I kept watching Kate and saying to myself, "Why does she look so familiar?" It's Annabella Sciorra! Duh, Jeannine.
The opening scene between Papi and Kit was pretty funny, too: "I guess I'm just not a lesbian." I'm really glad that Kit has finally admitted she has a problem. I was so disappointed to see her doing cocaine, too! Yuck. Poor messed-up thing. The way that Angus treats her now that she's gone to him for help will be the test to prove if they've got anything left worth saving.
Did you all see that Dana's "back" in the season finale? I think it's going to be a wild ride next week.

Sigh. Some of us deliberately don't watch the "coming next week" so as to preserve surprises. I guess I'll have to start skipping the last paragraphs of recaps now.

In other words, Jon88, you -- and others who want to be surprised -- won't be reading this site next week because Jeannine will be weaving the L-word recap with the next season's cliffhangers.
Lot of interesting angles for the episode. I think the writers would do a disservice to those in the military and the storyline if Tasha abandons her post. Yeah, we'll miss her next season, but having her leave the military will always create an unspoken rift (leaving a career she loves) between her and Alice.
I'm not surprised that Bette does not see the forest from the trees. She's a control freak. As she said, there's nothing wrong with that, but she shouldn't expect to find healthy relationships that's all one-sided (her way). LOL Anyway, I hope that she doesn't get back with Tina because that storyline/relationship is boring.
Not cool with Kat... the drugs... relying on Angus to get her life in order. As for not being a lesbian, we already knew that when she didn't hook up with Ivan (I think that was her name).
That was cool what Max did with the departure. Hopefully, he'll land another job (other than Alice's website). I'll be surprised if he doesn't get the surgery.
Yeah, that will be great to see Dana. It would be nice if the writers had a guest appearance by Carmen.

I was thinking we'd see Carmen again someday too. Unless she left town, I find it hard to believe she wouldn't run into the girls again. I am completely over Bette and Tina but I like them having a civilized friendship because they do share a daughter. Now who didn't see Tina coming back home from a mile away? You just knew it was only a matter of time before the dude was passe for her. I think she's right, she needs to be by herself. I knew that was Annabella, I love her. I didn't see going back to Iraq coming. Knocked me over. I really hope we get to see her next season. Loved Shane buying the "ugly" purse and Alice buying the "ugly" watch. Again, quite confused with the Helena Catherine situation. So is she just manipulating Helena to do anything she wants to? Is Catherine the puppetmaster? I don't know why Helena doesn't just flip her off and go on with her life. I thought Max quitting was a mistake. What he should've gotten was a lawyer. Make them pay. But I was really impressed by his departure. I've had less dignified departures from some of the jobs I left.
I was hoping Bette would find Jenny and beat the crap out of her. I hope they all do. And Annabella's character doesn't want her so that should be funny when she officially comes on to her. You can just see that she totally wants her. Too bad because she wants Tina.
Stellar episode, can't believe next week's the last.

Really good episode overall this week...totally laughed my butt off when Bette was reading "Lez Girls" in bed as well.
I happy to see Shane in a seemingly stable relationship with Paige, but still feel like this character has gotten off easy since leaving Carmen at the alter. True, the storyline with Shay was heartbreaking, but it still seems that Shane really hasn't dealt with the consequences of the fallout with Carmen, so I hope that Carmen does come back in the last episode or in the future.
My husband made a comment last night that all the men on this show are seen as either wimps or total jerks, which I don't necessiarily agree with. His comment was in relation to Phyllis' husband's reaction to her coming out. I thought it was a low blow for him to bring their daughter into this situation without Phyllis knowing. I love this show and am going to miss it so much after next week!!!

Yeah Phyllis' husband was being a jerk. Was that Cybil's real daughter?

That love scene with Max and Grace was horrible! Yes, some issues about Max's self image were raised, but I really could have done without the rubber penis! Yuk!
Lots of good Bette/Tina stuff. Nice to see them re establish relations, and not really romantic, but still with a strong bond. I do hold out some hope for them, but if they had rushed them back together, it would be totally unbelievable after all that has gone on. Glad Tina's splitting from Henry finally though. Bette is always awesome, and yes, her reading in bed was hilarious! Ditto on the fab Goldfrapp. Very cool to have them on. Can't believe we're up to the finale. As a non US viewer who downloads, I didn't see the preview. Dana???!!

Yes, KAD! That WAS Cybill's real daughter! I double-checked the credits because they were SO eerily alike it was weird. Clementine Ford is her name. Feels like just yesterday she was but a young child. Ahhh...Moonlighting.

I THOUGHT that girl looked like Cybill!! LOL I'm glad I'm not just crazy!
I love me some Goldfrapp and I loved the appearance.
I am dreading (in an exciting way) the Jenny showdown that we all know will come when she is "fired." That woman is a total wench a lot of the time, but the show just wouldn't be the same without her, oddly enough.
Dana is "coming back"? Werp?!

-I love jenny but I'm hoping she gets what's coming in the season finale.
-This episode was my first chance to really see Tina and Bette interact (in a civil way). That was a sweet scene.
-Loved Max leaving, the company really gave him no choice.
-The most anticipated storyline going into the finale is the Tasha & Alice relationship. I just want them to have a happy ending, even if Tasha leaves, I want them to end on good terms.
few quick questions:
-Did Tina meet her husband while she was with Bette or after she and Bette broke-up?
-Have any of the girls ever chased after the same woman? I ask because it's obvious Kate wants Tina and that Jenny wants Kate.

I disagreed with most of what you wrote. I can't stand Bette and Jodi together, and duh, Bette's a control freak, is that suppose to be news?

Tina met Henry while she and Bette were still together. The way that Bette found out that Tina wasn't happy as a lesbian anymore was when Bette saw one of Tina's ...chat room erm... "discussions" with a man. I don't think Henry was the chat room guy, though... I think he was the first "IRL" guy that she met after she'd realized she wanted to be with men again.
As you can imagine, it didn't make for an amicable parting of ways between Tina and Bette.
Also, at one point, Jenny and Carmen were almost about to become an item, but then Carmen realized that she was actually deeply in love with Shane, and Shane returned the affection. Although it hurt Jenny, she saw the connection too, and since Shane is Jenny's best friend, she actually did the noble thing [*gasp*] and backed away from Carmen. So yes, two of "the group" have both fallen for the same woman before.
Considering both times now, it's been Jenny... makes it a little more interesting that it's happening again with her, huh?

Listen, TV Show Blogs are not "news" blogs. They are commentary, as in, how the blogger feels about plot developments and characters in the show. Bette's control issues are really coming to a "head" right now, so it's a very valid character flaw to discuss, at least, to me, it is.
Also, if you disagreed with most of what I wrote, that's fine. However, this group of L Word fans are respectful when they argue, and that's what makes this blog fun and worth visiting. They write very well thought-out points and actual comments, which we all welcome. "I disagreed with most of what you wrote," and "Duh" aren't exactly conversation.
If you want to be a positive contributor to this TV blog like the other frequent visitors here, we wholeheartedly welcome you, but please find something worth considering or a concrete viewpoint to add to the conversation next time.

Awww now, Jon!! The "coming next week" previews never truly give away what's going to be happening. If anything, they do a great job of misleading and then totally surprising the audience when the show airs! But for you and the others who don't like to watch the previews, I'll put a "preview alert" warning in whenever I talk about the trailers.
