February 21, 2007: I Can’t Do the Perp Walk Dressed Like This

It feels like I got shot in the ass. I spent my whole write-up last week talking about how I wished we could have had more of the ensemble. So what does this show do? They lock the six of them in a room together and give us almost a full 22 minutes of pure madness. I swear I knew nothing of this ahead of time.

First of all, I loved that they opened the show with Squatch and Louis singing Whitney Houston’s “Didn’t We Almost Have It All?” As always, the song choice was completely appropriate considering they thought they had lost everything. Some shows go for subtle; this show doesn’t. Of course, then Rockefeller showed up with the news that was “so off the chain that the chain itself was nothing but a distant memory.” Speaking of distant memories, how many of you noticed that everything the Knights did in the apartment prior to locking themselves in the panic room was something Mick himself did in the first episode’s E!-type profile? Well, he didn't shoot liquid butter directly into his mouth, but when else would anyone get the chance to do that?

The countdown clock was a pretty brilliant send-up of 24. Plus, it allowed us to gauge just how much time Rockefeller was on the toilet (about 40 minutes). As he even said, “Yo man! Rome wasn’t built in a day!” I had to agree with Squatch’s reaction of, “Dear lord, please let you not mean what I think you mean,” when Rockefeller asked for privacy. However, because I was on my couch, and not in the panic room, I was able to enjoy the sights and sounds, mostly because I wasn’t subjected to the smells.

Of course, they managed to kill two birds with one shot to the buttocks: the Knights escaped, and Enrico is out of the picture. Brilliant.

I invite you all to check out my esteemed colleague Anthony Layser’s interview with Maz Jobrani in this week’s Q&A. Also, major kudos to Lenny Venito for having the guts to spend the majority of the episode shirtless. It’s always nice to see someone on television who would fit in at the Jersey shore.

Let’s hope that Rockefeller heals soon. I hear laughter is the best medicine, so to close, here are some of the funnier lines from this episode:

— “What would David Blaine do?”
— “Whatever happened to Terrence Trent d’Arby? He had such a big hit with 'Wishing Well,' and then he just disappeared.”
— “Yeah, it ricocheted! Right into my ass!”

I love love love The Knights, and I enjoy your column/blog almost as much as I do TKOP. Thank you! I especially wanted to thank you for providing the link to write to ABC. I've already written glowing comments about The Knights of Prosperity using several names per your suggestion. I literally laugh out loud every 5 seconds or so when watching. What else can one do to tell the creators of TKOP how much we love the show (and to vehemently protest any possible musings toward cancellation and other similar thoughts)? Didn't The Knights used to have a MySpace page?

Another brilliant episode!!! Loved every second of it. This show has done a LOT to fill the void left by Arrested Development. ABC - please give them a chance to grow more!!!!

I wonder how Louis being filthy rich will change things now.

Great write-up as usual.

Just like Esperanza, I was wondering about Terrence Trent d'Arby just the other day...Hilarious! (But wasn't his hit titled "Wishing Well"? Guess I showed my age with that question...)

Instead of AD (RIP), I'm comparing this show to 30 Rock, another sitcom that started at so-so and just kept improving every week. Last night was laugh-out-loud funny from the git-go, taking a sitcom cliche (trapped in a small space) and turning it into something brilliant. Best line: "Your name is Rockefeller Butz, and you got shot in the ... PANIC ROOM!!"

Thanks Jimmy M. 5 seconds of googling would have saved me the embarassment :). It's been edited.

I love your review! It reminds me of things I forgot, then I laugh all over again! I loved that Eugene was going to tell Esperanza admit his feelings to Esperanza, then she thanked them for not looking at her that way. So he passed his turn!!! He is the leader of this raggedy bunch of thieves, and he tries to do it with so much excitement and committment. He keeps them rallied and ready to go! I love KoP - ABC keep it up. This is the best comedy on TV!

I liked the opening sequence and the singing, too, but I just cracked up at the ending sequence as they were all walking along in their "Knights of Prosperity" shirts - there was Louis still wearing Mick's gold silky shirt under his tee shirt, and then we saw poor Rockefeller limping like crazy trying to keep up.....too funny!!!

omg this show keeps getting funnier and funnier by each episode. what had me rolling was when gary brought out his ancient cell phone. why on earth would anybody still has that type of a cell phone? gary is fast becoming one of my favorites. the look on his face when rockefeller was using the bathroom....priceless. im still laughing at this show.

A note to ABC: According to Jim? Hope and Faith? C'mon, even you have to realize how much those shows suck. This is a chance to redeem yourself in the eyes of all sitcom watchers. Renew Knights!
