« Kid Nation
Teaching Racism?
I liked Kid Nation because it's showing children how they have to 'get along' with children they don't know or like. Same is true of the real world. I like the idea they are learning survival skills that will carry them through the rest of their lives.
However, I was unhappy not to see a dark skinned child on The Council. (East Indians are Caucasians for all those who slept through their anthropology class at 8 AM!!) It consisted of all Caucasians, not one African. Again, we are teaching & showing that Africans have no power even though they are in the upper classes. This was my only disappointment with the show.
And what does that say for children who are of mixed race? The one little girl saying, "I picked green because I'm Irish" made me realize we are teaching the subtleties of racism . . . once again!
However, I will be taping this show until its end.

Oh Please! Geesh...the council was picked for its skill, not its color. I'm an Indian, or excuse me, Native American...there's not one of us on the council either. So what? They are all Americans, plain and simple. Look at the kids and learn a lesson from them...they don't even notice color. From what I could see, they focused on attitude and personality conflict, and worked it out pretty darn well too.

And plus since the last episode all of the kids had a chance to run for council. Not one African-American ran, not only that but Onjay (the only Hindu) stayed on the council against the christian white girl and Zach (one of the Jewish kids) was voted on.
These kids don't care about race they all just want to build the town up and prove that they can build a town just as good as adults.

First of all, East Indians may be categorized as caucasian, because of origin but they are still DARK SKINNED. So you seem to be the only racist around here not to recognize that.
Actually you're not the only one. That little bitch Mallory on Kids Nation is obviously a raving racist seeing as she is constantly picking on Anjay- something which she would never dream of doing to her WHITE peers. What a racist cow.

As for the "bitch" Mallory, I believe you're thinking of her older sister Olivia. From the impression I get from the editing, I think she'd be questioning ANYONE in charge whose name isn't Olivia. Don't think there's anything racist here; just a problem not being in charge herself.

I really don't think a child celebrating his or her heritage is racist. What would you have thought if a black child picked a color based on his or her heritage?
I think the problem with racism is that it works both ways and people get upset when someone else celebrates a heritage that isn't their own. Then those that celebrated get upset when the others celebrate and on and on and on...
It's the delicate balance between being aware and being too sensitive that produces the tension. As long as we're aware that all people are uncomfortable about it, we can get past it.
As for your main premise, maybe it wasn't racism. I didn't watch the show, but that doesn't matter...if a "minority" wasn't represented, it could be that those children chose not to participate or that the voters (was it a vote?) chose better candidates. If you're open to that possibility, then others should be fair and concede that racism could have been a factor, too.
