Episode Recap: "His Visit: Day Nine"

Well, there goes the first season. And just when I thought that John was Jesus, the writers went ahead and threw in a bunch of hints to make me think he might actually be an alien. "You're all going to be toast," he told Linc. "We're coming 9/11/14." Could it just be a coincidence that their arrival is scheduled take place on the anniversary of the attacks on America? Then again, could those numbers actually represent the bible passage 9:11-14 that describes salvation through the Lord? There are just so many ways this could go!

I'm interested in finding out more about this Cincinnati place that John took Shaunie to, and why Shaunie couldn't recall much of his visit other than the fact that they, whoever they are, want to sponsor him. And even if they are aliens or simply the all-powerful celestial beings that occupy heaven, what exactly do they find so useful about the Yost family? If their true goal is to redeem mankind, then perhaps these alien gods are of the mind-set that the Yost family would serve as the best example to the rest of the world of just how redeeming they can be. But there is still that whole "you're all going to be toast" thing to consider.

What exactly did Dwayne and Jerri see on the live streaming video on Butchie's website? Their reactions caused me to believe that there was more than met the eye. Did they hear John's father's voice? I wonder if he sounds like Barry White.

I thought it was great how Freddie is this big, tough drug-runner, but he had to send Palaka over with an opening line to disguise his ulterior motive of finding out what Barry and Ramon would be wearing to the parade. Palaka's the perfect lackey for the job, too. To paraphrase: "Blah blah blah blah blah blah. Look at the bears. That's right. You wearin' that to the parade?"

The scene at the car lot was interesting. What did it mean when the salesman told John, or "Country," as he referred to him, that he was taking him offline? Could he be part of John's people? His speech was almost as murky as John's, and he even referred to the Cissy and Butchie incident, which I didn't think was common knowledge.

What was that ending about when Dr. Smith showed up 20 years younger from Cincinnati and Cissy apparently got pregnant? I bet Stephen Hawking would know, but I have about as much an idea of what is going on as Bill Jacks does of social relations. I did enjoy seeing Kai tear it up on her board, though. The girl's got some skills!

Anyway, that concludes the first season of the show, and also my blog. Thanks for reading, everybody! I hope you enjoyed my weekly musings.

Thanks a bunch for writing about this show. I hope it comes back for another run. What fun. And you are correct, Keala Kennelly has mad skills. She was my favorite on the show.

Well, they said they would explain everything in the promos, and now I'm more confused than ever.

Still, I can't wait for the next season.

GlennW: Sorry, but I seriously doubt there will be a season two of this show.

Am I the only one that thought this show was just a complete waste of time? I stuck with this show for every episode hoping that something would make sense last night during the season finale. It just left me confused. Maybe I am missing something?

I loved JfC. I do hope that it gets another season. I barely understood a single thing that was going on but who cares I was entertained. I will probably buy it when it comes out on DVD whenever that is just so I can watch it again and again hoping to decipher what the hell went on. Loved it. But I said that already. Thanks for the recaps.

I have to admit being captivated by this show (maybe it was alien mind contol) but I have no clue what the hell happened. I do hope that it comes back, I am hoping that there is an explanation to this show!

I do have to make one comment. How tough would it be to round up the old actors from Deadwood to do a movie like reported! THEY ALL WERE IN JOHN FROM CINCINNATI!

I have to say that I feel really gypped. I stuck with this show because I really love all HBO original series, but this one really missed the mark and left me cold. I must be too stupid to "get it", I guess I'm not enlightened enough....but I want my ten hours back. I really hope this show doesn't come back, I am appalled that they scrapped Deadwood in place of this crap.

I was confused just like everyone else. It made no sense but I loved the show. I just wish they had some clarity in this show. something that lets the viewer know that we are not crazy. But I loved it nonetheless.

i'm not sure that you have to have a giant iq to understand the show but i think it's interesting that JFC is used a lot on this blog. i think it's something i would have heard on NYPD blue, had it been on cable. i like the writing, it's wonderful and colorful. i'm a huge fan of storytelling...it doesn't all come out in a few episodes and you move on- you stick with it and allow the story to flow. john has made you think. what if jesus came back as a nutty kid with a crazy 'do- would you put up with him? how cool was it that he brought all of those characters- so ready to bail on one another- together in his own way? tina blake may be forgiven by cissie and butchie kicked his habit in time to be a dad to his son. the hotel isn't a parking lot and the website is getting lots of hits. all of the characters are coming through something, like life. i'm not sure where we're going with the show but i hope it returns so i can enjoy the ride!

So many of you have watched this as drama? With levitation, miraculous healings, drugs, despicable characters and all that I was watching it as a faux-tragedy comedic SciFi featurette and loved it at that level. No, really I liked it a lot.

The discussion at the iTunes website is almost all positive, even deeply enthusiastic about John From Cincinnati. Fans here might want to check it out.

This is just an observation: John's last name is Monad as revealed in episode one. One definition of the word monad is: "A singular metaphysical entity from which material properties are said to derive." (Metaphysics is the philosophical study of being and knowing.)Plus one anagram of Monad is nomad. As I said, just an observation.

Note: iTunes subscriptions to John from Cincinnati are free. Episode One is available for downloading. The resolution looks good even on my 22" flat LCD monitor pushed to full-screen mode. I was able to pick-up more watching the second time . . . like John's last name.

iTunes also has an interview "A Conversation David Milch" who is the co-creator/executive producer of John From Cincinnati. (JFC)

iTunes also has a JFC Podcastwhich shows some actors (out of character) saying JFC is about a "Spiritual transformation" "Redemption" and "Healing" while Milch says it is " . . . also about surfing." (Yeah I know it has precious little surfing.)

The JFC Podcast at iTunes contains a biblical quote, a part of Genesis 1:2 is shown on the screen "And the spirit of God was moving over the face of the water."

FYI to all--HBO has announced it has cancelled JfC. If you ask me, Milch should have stuck with Deadwood and not even started JfC. At least you could follow the story line.

I liked the overall concept of JfC, but it was so difficult to follow.

I hear the show is being cancelled.:( Do you know if that is true? I really liked it, but I must admit I usually didn't know what was happening. You are right, Kai can really ride those waves.

The show is "toast".

What a rip off! How many times are these networks going to do this to us? In this case HBO.

Some of you have said that you feel like it was a waste of time. You can't get the answers to everything at once or there would be no "Series".

Now you can feel gypped because they canned it.

Yes, HBO officially cancelled JFC the day after the finale aired.

There's an online petition. Dunno if it'll do much good, though.
