October 4, 2006: Leader of the Pack
OK, forget the onion. This show has more layers than a bad day on Project Runway. I am completely wrapped up in Jake and all that comes with him — his past with Emily, his ability to work a black box, his leadership skills that pour out during panic situations while his personal issues sit on the back burner, waiting to be reheated.
Eric's affair is bothersome but puts some much-needed faults into his expected perfection. But there seem to be a lot of things that aren't what they seem on the outside... Gray (Michael Gaston) and Shepp's secret about the "heart attack" in the mine (I'm still not convinced they just let him die); Skylar's real personality hidden under the safe, mean girl she pretends to be; Robert Hawkins, his U-Haul and the cement-filled wheelbarrow in his basement. I felt bad for his wife and kids, wanting to join the rest of the town at the cookout but confined to their house for reasons unknown to us. What was he moving in the U-Haul? How did he know the Asian news anchor — on the only TV signal coming in over the satellite — was speaking Mandarin?
There were moments that I loved... moments that balanced out all the questions. The little jokes from Stanley (Brad Beyer), even though he was the only one who had been out in the rain; Jake sitting with Heather at the cookout; Dale finding that train full of food. There are seconds of salvation in between long stretches of frustration, but both are worth it.
Still, whatever happened to the prisoners? And where did the passengers of the 747 disappear to? It seems the answers are lying all around the Kansas farms, and I'm ready for Jake to keep pushing.
Let the theories begin....

Oh, there are more questions than that... where did the crew of the freight train go? Why did the train stop in the first place? Why would anyone bother to nuke Wichita? When will the Mad Max/Road Warrior crossbow-armed dune-buggies start to show up? Will the national guard tanks level Jericho when they discover a freight car full of looted food sitting in the market? Why were there so many people from out of town visiting a small town in the middle of nowhere on the same day? How come there aren't more Armenian bloggers? At what point did I lose control of this post? The world wants to know...

I'm not too impressed with this show, I think TelevisionWithoutPity has made me think they are all retarded. I did like the Mandarin news anchor with the map of the US, really creepy.

This show has been one of my new favorites this year. I love the mystery surrounding Hawkins and Jake. Hawkins building a bunker, or whatever it was, in his basement was just bizarre. Of course, no more bizarre than his unloading weapons from a U-haul.
The two things last night that really bugged me were in the details. I get that Jericho is a fictional town but a little more regard for geography would be nice. Emily's comment about "Goodland being on the way to Wichita"? If that's the case, than Toto we're not in Kansas anymore. Based on the road sign in the first episode, Jericho should be closer to the middle of Kansas, not the border.
And what's with the teenagers? Half the country has been blown up, you just spent hours locked in bunkers to avoid radiation poisoning, your friend's parents are dead, and the ONLY thing concerning them is why the popular girl is hanging out with the nerd? I still really like the show but I just had to get that off my mind.

I am digging the hell out of this show. I was noticing at the bar, there sure were alot of Asian people in that little bar..in Jericho Kansas. (not racist just an observation). Stanely did recover quickly didn't he.
So I guess there are farmers that just stayed on the farm and never went to town which leaves us many new characters to introduce.
I think the train crashed because it hit a car and dragged it down the tracks. I was surprised he didn't just get in the train and drive it into town, horn blowing..that would help get Dale the chicks.
I can't wait for next week! (true sign of a good show)

Love it! Way too many questions though. I like the other posters comment about the stupid teens.....yeah we've been bombed and your staying safe with a NERD OMG how could she. Duh, these kids are really stupid. I actually think the affair is dumb, that guy is a moron. Anyways I really do love the show just have to vent !!!

Prisoners? Wasn't it the prisoners that Jake shot while rescuing Emily and the others from the prisoners before they all went into the farm's shelter as the rain was starting? I don't think the prisoners made it into the farm's shelter.
I do like this show, and every week, while some questions are answered, even more are popping up. Can't wait ot see where this is going.

I am also loving this show. I am a sucker for a mystery and they have quite a few. I definitely feel Hawkins is setting certain things in motion, leading the citizens to do specific things but for what purpose I don't know. The empty plane in the middle road was just too scary. Ditto the train. Was the driver of the car killed?
I loved this comment and wondered the same thing: When will the Mad Max/Road Warrior crossbow-armed dune-buggies start to show up? LOL!
My favorite moment of the night was when Johnson punched Ridley in the gut and told him to stop freaking out the rest of the town with his comments. Especially since he and the other dude killed the poor teacher or let him die whatever! Loved Stanley, he is the comic relief but what happened to the tanks he said he saw. Hmmmm....

This show is really, really good. I hope we get to see it played out to the end.
The scene where everyone was listening to the last 30 (?) seconds of the flight recorder was very disturbing to me (excellent scene, but sad too). Only because it was sooo real and to hear those pilots last words as they were crashing, oh man...
But, I also got a little bit of hilarity out of that scene with the one thing I've questioned since the show began. How in heck did Jake hear that one pilot's comment about a GPS error which led Emily to believe her fiancee is okay.
I'm not nit picking, it was actually funny. He had to drown out so much stuff just to hear that one comment and there was so much else going on in that recording I don't see how he could have possibly heard it.
I decided last night that I will be purchasing this show when it hits DVD whether we get to see the full run or not.
They say that fans of Jericho were probably fans of Invasion (I was), but Invasion's numbers were not enough to make ABC renew the show. If the same people that were watching Invasion are indeed watching Jericho, I hope Jericho's numbers have been enough to make NBC keep it around. Sorry, I meant CBS. I DVR so many shows I didn't even know what channel this came on!

Jake and Emily killed the two prisoners dressed like deputies. No telling how many there were on the prison bus, but Sheriff and his car are still unacounted for, so probably more out there. Train appeared to be stopped just shy of a narrow bridge that it probably can't negotiate with that car stuck sideways on the front. Looked to me like Hawkins has a storage rental somewhere and was bringing that drum and stuff to his basement to have handy. That was mortar in the wheelbarrow to build a block wall to hide the drum. He is not a mason, as he was using way too little mortar for the job. Obviously has a background in black ops, but can't figure out if he was sent there by some agency or got wind of the coming crisis and got his family out along with a shed full of goodies. If I was mayor I'd take Gray for a walk in the woods and come back alone. The probability that he killed the panic attack guy aside, he seems so bent on seizing power that he is willing to disrupt the safety and morale of the town to gain control.

So many new questions from last night's show. I love it!
What did Jake do to Emily to make her say "You should be the one who's dead, not my fiance". HARSH! But he reacted like he deserved it.
I laughed when the mayor punched that dude in the stomach. He got what he deserved.

First of all I must say that I love this show. It has pulled me in and keeps me guessing.
That said, I have to agree with my fellow Kansans. A little better grasp of the geography of the state would be helpful. I live in the soutwest corner of the state. An hour from the Colorado border. I have been to Goodland, KS. It is north of me. Wichita on the other hand is in the south-central part of the state. All the writers have to do is look at a map. Can they at least try and be a little accurate? Oh, I dunno pick two cities in the same direction???? I am guessing they are supposed to be in a town somewhere in the southwest or northwest of the state. Picking Dodge City to Wichita would make much more sense.
Again, love the show and can't wait to see what happens next week. I couldn't quite make out what Hawkins said to the guy from Denver in the pre-views..anybody?

As a Kansas girl, something I noticed: The county designator tag on Hawkins' truck said FI, which is Finney County. This is about half way between I-70 to the north, and the KS/OK state line to the south, in western Kansas, almost due west of Wichita and Southeast of Goodland.
I've seen it written somewhere that Hawkins' truck was a U-Haul, but I didn't catch that detail. If it truly was a U-Haul brand, it would have had an Arizona license plate, or at least every U-Haul I've ever seen had an Arizona plate, so why would this one have a KS plate? I know, I'm nitpicking.
Otherwise, I'm enjoying the show.
