The Big Lost Surprise

What was the big surprise at the Lost panel today? Michael (Harold Perrineau Jr.) is coming back to the island, though the surprise wasn't as big as it was planned to be after the announcement was made at yesterday's TCA event (see Ausiello's blog from the event yesterday).

While the "big surprise" was lessened a bit, "Team Darlton" (Damon Lindeloff and Carlton Cuse) had a few tricks up their sleeves for the packed room, many of whom started lining up 3 hours before the panel began. They were more than willing to answer questions from fans, except each was armed with a bell that they would ring if they felt the other was going a bit too far with their answer; the bells were used far too often, followed by the groans of fans. A fan followed up on the Michael announcement by asking for more information on how he'll return, and before Carlton Cuse had a chance to answer, the sound of a bell could be heard off-stage, and Harold Perrineau Jr. emerged to an eruption of applause from the audience; it was only time the bell was met with applause. They wouldn't reveal when Michael returns, but they said Perrineau would be a series regular in the fourth season, and his return would be near the start of the season.

Fans were very curious about the use of the flash-forward in the season finale, and Darlton revealed that they'll be used in season 4, while still continuing with flash-backs. The big question is how far forward, and with whom, since a future-flash would reveal details about the current situation on the island (we already know Jack and Kate survive, since they were in the first flash-forward). Flash-forwards were always in the works, they just had to decide when to reveal the plot device to the audience, and the season 3 finale seemed like the best time.

There were other random facts reveled in the panel:
-The show will have an end, and the finale won't leave fans hanging with 10 seconds of black
-We'll find out more about Libby in season 4
-Rousseau's story will be told, but probably not until season 5
-Season 4 will premiere in February, and will run for 16 weeks without reruns. Seasons 5 and 6 will also consist of 16 episodes.
-A trailer for the Lost video game was shown, though most of the footage showed characters in the jungle. The game is being developed by Ubisoft Montreal
-Ben didn't plan to be caught in Rousseau's trap, and where he was going at the time will be revealed
-What happened to the balloonist Henry Gale? Ben didn't kill him, but "they had words."

The panel ended with a recently discovered Dharma film talking about station 6, "The Orchid." It's not a botanical research station, but is highly volatile, and potentially dangerous experiment. The film shows Dr. Marvin Candle holding a rabbit with the number 15 on his side, written in black. Objects begin falling behind Candle, the camera moves, and an identical rabbit appears on a shelf. They start shooting the opening to the training video again before the film runs out. Could this be a cloning experiment? Hopefully that's answered in season 4.

It is not nice to correct someones spelling, he is just trying to give us info.

It's not nice to perpetrate ignorance. The spelling error was inadvertent, but you're suggesting that we all just leave errors hanging around, presumably to multiply and fester.

I won't make the obvious comparisons with certain government tactics.

Regarding the Dharma video;

The Doctor gives a different name than Marvin Candle, and he had full use of both of his arms.

Michael is important to the overall storyline.

One guy when asking about Libby made reference to her working for Dharma, to which Damon replied "Your speculations are along the right path."

The lost video game looks like it features mostly Jack, and the character really ran like Matthew Fox.

While Carlton was ringing the bell, Damon was nodding in an affirmative to the question of "Will Jack and Claire find out they're related?"

The Michael returning announcement was supposed to take place at the con, but the critics at the TCA were whining soooo much, they released that little tidbit a day early.

That's all I can remember right now.

Thank you for pointing out the spelling error. I couldn't think of a character named Russo and was wondering what I could have missed. Rousseau makes much more sense!

Thanks for the spelling correction guys - it's been fixed.

Capta - I was reading a video game site after posting this and they said the player takes control of a different (and new) survivor of the crash. I thought we controlled Jack as well, but I decided not to mention it because I wasn't sure.

I wanted someone to ask why Jack thinks his father is alive in the future, but no one did. I emailed Carlton about it, but he dodged the question (I'm sure Damon would have been ringing the bell anyway).

Jack was the main one shown. Only reason I mentioned it...

I wanna know why no one asked if Walt was coming back too, and what was the deal with him anyway?

Ben said they got more than they bargained for with Walt...

I was curious about his dad as well, but it got started late (I was actually the absolute LAST person they let in) so we didn't get as much in as I would have liked. Plus all the mics not working was kind of bothersome.

Darlton did a great job though, I was glad I made it.

Just enough information to get me all stoked up and still I have to wait. That's the best way to do it, however. I am most curious about the Jack's Dad thing too. Thanks for the info.

I don't think Jack really thought he dad was still alive-he was using him as a ploy-Remember, he was in full-active-addiction-schemer-mode, (ala the drugs in my pants aren't mine!) trying to con people to get what he wanted...

Worrying about the 2 rabbits getting near each other and talking about a shift and 9 minutes sounds a lot more like short term time travel then it does cloning.

"The big question is how far forward, and with whom, since a future-flash would reveal details about the current situation on the island (we already know Jack and Kate survive, since they were in the first flash-forward)."

Who says Jack and Kate survive for sure? Flash forwards show the future, but it's not a definitive future! People seem to forget that "Team Darlton" love to keep us on our toes--and what would be a bigger shock than to have one of them die on the island, leaving us with our jaws wide open and a "But you showed us that they live!"-type phrase on the tips of our tongues.

Nothing is certain when it comes to "LOST".

Not to pick on TVGuide, since every news service and wire copy has done this, but the "3 sets of 16 episodes" is not news as it as HUGE doings a couple of months ago when ABC and Darlton announced it. Why news services made that sound like huge news when they brought it up at Comic-Con, I dunno.

Sorry, that's just another neurotic pet peeve of mine.

I was hoping we would never see him again. His character was constantly and consistently abrasive, aggressive, retarded, and annoying. Ugh.
