February 6, 2007: Needle in a Haystack

The parade of young patients continues this week as Foreman leads the charge in treating a teenager whose Romany heritage impedes his medical treatment. Secretive and suspicious of the world, Stevie (Jake Richardson) and his family refuse unproven treatment — their kind have been experimented on before — choosing instead their own homeopathic treatment for Stevie's ailment. Seeing a bit of himself in Stevie, Foreman takes a special interest in his scientifically inclined patient, even offering to get Stevie an interview for an internship. But culture and science clash. Stevie, with insight beyond his years, chooses family over promise. As he sees it, Chase, Foreman and Cameron are all successful doctors, but none of them wears a ring. Family: that's what it's all about.

House wasn't around much for such touching sentiment. He was too busy angling for a better parking spot. You see, it seems that wheelchair trumps cane and the addition to the staff of Dr. Julie Whitner (Wendy Makkena), a new researcher with her own blue and white parking permit, bumped House about 46 yards farther from the door. Not one to go quietly, House abandons his cane and rolls into a weeklong bet with Cuddy for the privilege of winning back his spot. The outcome is predictable yet deliciously expressed by Wilson: "Legal beats logic every time, just ask O.J." Foiled again, House's dramatic ploy for attention failed, though we were treated to an impressive display of wheelies and staircase management, which looked to me as if the actor performed his own stunts.

So what about everybody else? Well, Cameron was thankfully underused this episode. I guess she only gets the spotlight when a patient dies. Chase provided some laughs when he aptly and amusingly sized up a cheating couple's affair of the heart while digging for clues in their home. And of course watching the whole gang sneaking around ICU to do more tests on their patient was fun. However, the best exchange of the night was the wordy greeting between Wilson and House. "If it isn't Dr. Ironside." "If it isn’t Dr. I-had-no-friends-when-I-was-growing-up-so-all-I-did-was-watch-TV-by-myself-which-is-why-I-can-now-make-constant-pop-culture-references-which-no-one-understands-but-me." "That's my name, don't wear it out." Despite all the chuckle-worthy one-liners, the biggest joke of all was Stevie's diagnosis: an ingested toothpick. That little sliver of wood poked holes all through his insides. How one unknowingly swallows a toothpick is beyond me, but from Stevie's various complaints it's clearly not something I want to try.

The exchages with the Whitner were great. I liked the mystery. They didn't overdo the gypsy thing. It was nice they didn't show House interacting with them.

I hope this episode quells all the complaints people posted last week about that unconventional episode!

I liked this episode. Had some good mystery. Had some good laughs. I like the interactions between House and the new doctor. I wonder if they are setting up a future love match for House. Cuddy and House always have good scenes together as well. I don't think a relationship would work between them. Never good to sleep with the boss.

I do think this was a better episode than last week. I liked that last week was different, but it still didn't quite work. Still wish this site wouldn't post spoilers on the front page. Ruined the surprise marriage on Grey's. Now it has something on this show.

I thought this was just OK. Not great, not bad, just OK.

I have to admit that Foreman was actually likeable in this episode, and I am starting to think that long run, he's the best doctor of the bunch (including House).

I don't get why Cuddy caved in to House. She's such an enabler. I wonder how she is able to keep her job, since clearly she's such a pushover. I expect her to be a little more firm in her decisions.

I seem to be in the minority again, as I usually am regarding this show. But, I cannot stand Cuddy. I don't care for the character or the actress. I see absolutely no chemistry between her and House.

As a matter of fact, it's getting so that the only character I do find interesting is House. He has depth and layers and sometimes surprises me. Practically everyone else is predictable with the possible exception of Foreman.

Oh, and by the way, Steve did swallow the toothpick. He knew he did but thought he'd pass it. It was the cramped quarters of the car that caused it to perforate and start all the trouble. It was actually stated pretty much that way on the show.

I liked this episode. House was back to being his old self. I loved his bumper sticker on the back of his whellchair, 'I wish I was walking,' priceless. He was like a little kid wheeling around in the snow, his smirks were priceless.

Since I live in New Jersey, it was nice to see fake snow. I havn't seen snow in forever, just bitter cold.

I don't care for any ships on this show. I like Cuddy better than I like Cameran, can't stand her in fact. I think House is better off alone. But there is definitly chemistry and tension between House and Cuddy, which I think is why Cuddy always caves to House. It just seems that there is a past history there, I mean they have know each other for years. It'll come up eventually, this season seems to indicate that.

I thought the parking space bit was ridiculous and pathetic.

I liked this episode. The one-liners were great.

I thought that the wheelchair-bound researcher and House has better chemistry then Cuddy or Cameron (I still like Stacy best). She was witty and pushed back. I liked her. I couldn't tell if she really was gay or was just trying to throw House off.

Good diagnosis this week. Simple but good.

Can somebody at TVGuide PLEASE do something about the spoilers on the front page? Reading Ausiello's spoiler column should be a choice, not something that is foisted on everyone who visits the site. By all means advertise that a new one is up, but don't tell us what's IN it.

It was interesting that a simple toothpick was the culprit here, instead of an actual disease. I can't remember if the show has done this before, but it was a refreshing twist.

Dmsangel, ridiculous and pathetic? Yeah, that was the point! And that's why it was so great!

I wish I had taped the show. I thought for sure that the toothpick went through him through the side or bottom half of his body. I don't recall him having the toothpick in his mouth. Amazing that Fox doesn't have this show available to watch again. They've got Bones, Prison Break and 24 but no House. Odd.

Hopefully Dianora, we can start a campaign to stop this trend on this site. It just isn't right. A simple solution is what you propose. Just state there is a spoiler from Ausiello and people can click on the link to find out what it is. They for some reason have to state the nature of the spoiler. Irritating.

It's not really a spoiler from what I can tell.

He didn't have it in his mouth during the time we saw him. He had swallowed it previously. It takes a little while for it to travel the way it did.

I guess I was wrong. I edited the first post to take that out.

I don't agree achyfakey. I think that is clearly a spoiler. It is hinting at something that doesn't seem possible at the moment. So of course it probably will turn out to be true. Just like when they hinted about marriage for George and Callie. That didn't seem on the horizon, but it turned out true as well. And thus ruining the surprise of it. The site should not put these spoilers on the front page for people who don't want to see them. They could easily put something like House Spoiler Development-Click here to find out more or something along those lines. They just keep on blurting things out on the front page. No warning. No nothing.
