May 15, 2007: The Jerk

Just ask him to stay already! Am I the only one who wanted to reach through the screen and scream this at House? Foreman wants to stay, House wants him to stay, but they are both too stubborn to make that happen without the other asking for that privilege. Men. The funny thing is, Foreman is leaving because he doesn't want to turn into House, yet here he is acting just like the man. Methinks it's time for a little self-reflection, Eric.

How funny was this week's patient? Nate, played with finesse by Nick Lane was an obnoxious teenager suffering, it turns out, from hemachromatosis — too much iron in his blood — which had him in excruciating pain. Much to his beleaguered mother's (Colleen Flynn) dismay, Nate's personality problems were not a side effect of his illness. Nate's prickly style had Chase declaring him evil and Foreman sedating him purely to shut him up. Is it any wonder that House liked him?

In the midst of figuring out Nate's problem, Foreman tried to solve a little mystery of his own called: Who's Sabotaging my Career?. It seems someone at Princeton-Plainsboro doesn't want Foreman to leave, and went so far as to cancel a scheduled job interview. Let the amateur sleuthing begin. Was it Cuddy, who offered to double Foreman's salary and set up his own practice? Was it Wilson, House's self-admitted enabler? Was it Cameron, enabler No. 2? Before the big reveal I almost wondered if Foreman set the whole thing up himself to force House's hand — but no need because, of course, it was House. We know he isn't above a little underhanded manipulation; in fact he's proud of it. "I only sabotage people I consider worth it." Almost brings a tear to my eye.

What about Cameron declaring to Wilson that, "House is nothing more than a boss." Hell, what about Cameron suggesting that Chase would wreck Foreman's job opportunity for no reason apart from the fact that if he wanted to, he could. Chase still wants this woman? After that barb from Cam, I hope Chase calls out next Tuesday. But then, of course, he'd miss Foreman's last day, wouldn't he? Show of hands: Who thinks Foreman will actually leave? Hmm... None? Shocking!

Next week is the finale, so mark it in whatever organizational tool you use. Until then I leave you with some random thoughts, quotes, comments and questions.

— Tell me I'm wrong and that I did not see administrator Cuddy in a skirt with a thigh-high slit.
— Nate called Chase "Doogie" — loved it!
— I swear I saw a glint in Cameron's eye after Chase got tough and threatened Nate with restraints.
— We really need to see this "weird night janitor who wears his pants backwards" on-screen.
— House introducing himself to Nate, "I'm Dr. McCaney."
— House going head-to-head with Nate: "Arrogance has to be earned, what have you done to earn yours?" Nate retorting with, "I can walk."
— House telling Foreman that he's not ready to be on his own because, "You still trust my judgement more than your own." Come on, that's basically code for "Won't you please stay, Foreman. Pretty please?"

Yeah, Foreman, just stay. You know you want to.

CORRECTION: The Season 3 Finale will air in two weeks on May 29, 2007 and not next week as mentioned above.

Rhoda, you are so right that Foreman is already too much like House. At least attitude-wise. Chase is the one who has learned House's puzzle solving skills. It's fitting that Chase is the one who figured out that House did cancel Foreman's interview.

Foreman won't leave. He knows that his diagnostic skills are not up to House's level yet, so he has more to learn. That's why, as House pointed out, that Foreman trusted House's opinion on the case more than his own.

Rhoda, I think that season ender is in 2 weeks, not next week. Next week will be the preview of the new Spielberg reality show.

You are partial correct. She was wearing a skirt with two thigh-high slits.

I checked the date for the finale when my DVR did not have House scheduled for next week and it is listed for 5/29/07.

Great recap.

The preview for next episode said that the House finale would be 2 weeks from tonight. I'm guessing the American Idol finale is running in its time slot next week.

I also think House wants Foreman to stay, but I think he'd be okay with letting him go if House thought he could handle it. Clearly, as House demonstrated, Foreman doesn't trust himself enough to be the head of anything.

Especially that last scene, after the case is resolved, House lets Foreman rerun the useless test. And there's a moment where House is watching him, that I could almost see him thinking, "Come on, you idiot! Challenge me! Tell me no! Think for yourself!"

I think that, in his own twisted way, House really is grooming Foreman for his own position somewhere. But that time obviously hasn't come yet.

The best parts of the episode were:

When House said to Cuddy, 'You are an evil cun-ning woman', and when Chase told Camerson, 'See you next Tuesday.'

AMAZING.

Have you ever noticed that in many hospital-based TV shows, the "other" hospital has "Mercy" in its name? In this episode of House, the hospital Foreman applied to was New York Mercy. In Grey's Anatomy, the hospital George applied to was Mercy West. Even in General Hospital (House's favorite soap), the other hospital was Mercy Hospital. Coincidence?

Loved the back and forth between House and the brat.

"Arrogance has to be earned. What have you done to earn it?

"I can walk."

"Yeah well I don't bleed out of my penis."

Priceless!

Was it just me, or could the reference to an oddball janitor be a shout-out to Scrubs (a la "Seriously" from a couple of weeks ago and McCaney to Grey's Anatomy)?

the position that Cuddy offered Foreman was absolutely ridiculous. Why would she need another diagnostic team? Besides the little annoying thing, I definitely thought this episode was one of the best of this season.
