May 1, 2007: Family
Timing really is everything. Could Matty (Dabir Snell), on the verge of donating his life-saving bone marrow to Nick (Jascha Washington), his leukemia-stricken brother, have picked a worse time to get sick? Sure, it wasn't Matty's fault that his house was built on chicken droppings and that he played in dirt filled with gross bacteria that infected him with hystoplasmosis. But still, tick tock. Nick's got four days to live and Matty needs to be healthy to be a donor. What's worse is that it's taking his doctors nearly all of those four days to make a diagnosis.
Maybe if Foreman, still reeling from the loss of last week's patient, wasn't, understandably, pussyfooting around his diagnoses, things might get done faster. You see, he's reluctant to kill again — and who wouldn't be? But this irks House, who, of course, has turned on the countdown clock to Foreman's dismissal. You only get so much time to lick your wounds in this hospital.
With that in mind I'm glad that Foreman pulled it together enough to figure out Matty's infection. Coming off last week's show, there was no way to feel secure that Matty or Nick, or both even, weren't going to die, and watching their parents struggle with the doctors' ever-changing advice was heartbreaking. Honestly, the show made me a little weepy tonight.
As did Foreman's psychotic doctoring. I swear horns sprouted from Foreman's head moments before he decided to extract Matty's marrow without benefit of sedation or even a little painkiller. Saving lives is all good, but torturing people to do so is clearly not the path Foreman wants to (or should) go down. So I appreciate his resignation, though I’m not buying for a moment that Foreman will actually leave Princeton-Plainsboro hospital.
On a lighter note, it's Tuesday. The day Chase reminds Cameron that he likes her and that he wants them to be together. Aw, it's cute, no? And are you as convinced as I am that Cameron is now just playing hard to get? She was considerably less prickly this week towards everyone, even putting away House's backpack without complaint and sparing a few kind words for the parents. Pretty soon she'll be petting Hector, House's dog. Or is it Wilson's? Bonnie's? Whoever owns him now, Hector's visit to the show was scene-stealing — a trick usually reserved for his short-term master.

Great episode! It was hard watching Foreman extract the marrow. I really liked how I didn't know for sure if the boys were going to die, but was very relieved when they did live. The entire time I kept trying to figure out where I had seen the actor playing Nick. It wasn't until the end that I remembered him from the Big Momma's House movies.

Loved Hector!!! Between limping away with Wilson, to popping pain pills--I wished House had kept him (and I swear he wanted too!!) This was another good episode--Foreman wanted to work with House to become as good as he is--then when things go wonky--he doesn't want to work with him because he's afraid of becoming like him. Foreman needs to find some middle ground and I don't think quitting is it....
I love the writers of this show!!!

When Hector was limping away, House made a crack about the dog having some kind of accident. All I could think of was Verdell in As Good As It Gets, mimicking Jack Nicholson's peculiarities. That scene didn't need House's line; would've been even cuter if the dog was actually mimicking House, since you so know he could end up with the dog again, since they obviously bonded in spite of everything.
Thanks to Hugh Laurie for another amazing show. I used to fear that the show wouldn't last because he's so far from his family (and too good for TV, not that he'd ever see it that way); so glad he's been making it work. You honor us with your talent week after week, sir!

I've got to say that this episode pretty much had it all!
House falling again due to Hector chewing his cane - I have to admit that I laughed damned hard on that one - and Wilson saying that he didn't do it this time only added to it!
House purchasing the Flaming Cane - CLASSIC!!
Well - animal lovers must have really been up in arms about last nights episode with Hector - House drugs the dog - hurts the dog and then ends up looking lost as HEctor heads to his new home!
As for the rest of the show - it was not too predictable, not too emotional and I liked it as well!!!

Did anyone else besides me notice House thumbing through a "Sewing Notions" magazine in Cuddy's office? Hilarious!

Poor Hector! I hope PETA groups realize no animals were harmed during the making of that episode! I laughed when Houses stereo was stolen.
Glad the boys lived. Didn't want to get depressed again after last weeks. That huge needle for the marrow extraction looked incredibly torturous! And right in the bone too! OUCH! Poor kid.

Love watching Hugh Laurie as usual but this is the second week in a row where House hasn't made the crucial diagnosis and actually seemed to contribute fairly little medically. The point of the show has been that the hospital (and the viewer) puts up with the cranky bad-tempered pillpopping doctor because his brilliance solves everything in the end - if Foreman (or Chase in previous weeks) is the one now getting the brilliant insights, sooner or later Cuddy'll find she can do without the liability that is Greg House.

ExAl9, eh, I doubt that. Viewers complain when he solves every case every week. Besides, he was the engine running the show last night.

First of all, Foreman didn't "torture" the boy. Matty WANTED to help his brother, and he agreed to the procedure, even when Foreman warned him there wouldn't be any anesthetic. Yes, it was extremely painful for Matty, but since a) Matty agree, and b) it was going to save the brother, Foreman was justified in doing what he did.
The Hector storyline was funny... in the end he was just a canine House-- limping and pill-popping. But he'll go on to chew many a slipper and magazine in his new home (I assume).
One refreshing aspect of this episode was that there wasn't any childish House-Cuddy-Wilson foolishness. In fact there was very little in the way of relationship issues, to which I can only say, "Yay!" That stuff gets old after a while.

to Ranger99: "Well - animal lovers must have really been up in arms about last nights episode with Hector - House drugs the dog - hurts the dog and then ends up looking lost as HEctor heads to his new home!"
I would hope that it wouldn't be only animal-lovers who were upset about those scenes. He intentionally tried to kill the dog--TWICE. I don't see anything amusing in that and I was surprised that it was treated so lightly. I've always known House was a bastard, and this just makes me dislike him even more. If it weren't for the fact that I enjoy the rest of the show, I probably wouldn't watch it. This isn't the first time House has proved himself to be a complete prick.
