Subtitles

:( I don't know about everyone else but I am REALLY tired of the subtitles when the characters are speaking Japanese or Spanish. I am an English speaking American and I watch TV to relax not to READ and miss the interaction between the characters because I my eyes have to be glued to the bottom of the screen. I imagine a wider fan base is the reason behind it but I am getting very bored with it.

What bugs me is that a subtitled sceene will be on TV and the 2 screen via computer will be asking me questions. I can't read both!

Well, subtitles can be a bit of a strain on the eyes - but remember, this is a show about a GLOBAL phenomenon. There's plenty of places in the world where people don't speak English! And at least Maya, Hiro and Ando do speak English sometimes. I mean, Hiro and Kensei spoke to each other in English even though they were in Japan and both spoke Japanese. So I think the show does its best to keep the subtitles at a minimum.

That is one of the things that makes this show great. I would hate it if they started translating it so we hear English although I imagine if it were part of a heroes power it could happen under certain circumstances.

Heh. Not everyone in the world speaks English. English is not the universal language. You can't expect a show to maintain some realism by converting everyone's dialog to English even when the setting/culture is not remotely American.

Too funny. I suppose if you don't want the brain strain of reading and relaxing at the same time (the horror!), you could TiVo Bionic Woman or some other piece of trash sci-fi that's out, and leave Heroes to the people who can walk and chew gum at the same time.

I remember watching old WWII movies and in most of them the Germans or Japanese or whoever would always be speaking English in the movie. I think we all new from common sense that they didn't speak English among themselves. Since it was an American movie, to be aired in America, the movie just let them speak English so the viewer would know what they were saying. Yes, some movies did let them speak in their own language with subtitles but a lot of them didn't do that. I don't see why they need the characters speaking in foreign languages either. We surely are smart enough to know that the Japanese are speaking in their own language when they speak to each other. When the show airs in other countries do they dub it or use subtitles. I really don't know. I am just so sick of this press 1 for English cr,ap. No, English is not our official langualge but we all speak it here so why can't everyone else who wants to live and work here?

Hm would you want Hiro speaking Japanese dubbed in English that would really make Heroes cheesy with foreign characters trying to keep up with the english we hear it would look stupid just like every other dubbed movie that there is.

actually it is better when they show that the "heroes" are from different parts of the world = diversity. So obviously it gives some definition to the show when they have people speaking another language. True it is annoying at times, but it would be stupid to have a dubbed voice. I mean I watched old Bruce Lee movies and when they dubb it you see the person speaking in the movie & it doesn't go along with what you hear. And the person who posted about this being America. True. But America is DIVERSE. Not ALL AMERICANS have blue/green eyes & blonde hair. They can be Asian, Latin, European, or Middle Eastern. So quit being a chauvinist racist & just enjoy the show!!!

I don't mind diversity and I don't mind the subtitles. I wish I had time to learn more languages. My only gripe is that the 2 screen will inevitably ask me a complicated question when I'm trying to read the subtitles so I know what's going on. They rarely seem to do that when English is being spoken, save a few times when Claude was on screen, which also bothered me, even more than missing out on the subtitles during the live broadcast.

Thank you! Thank you!! Thank you!!! While I do not object to the subtitles on the basis of being an english speaking American, I find their use objectionable for a much simpler and (I think) more profoundly common reason....I am visually impaired!!!! Don't the show's producers realize that in our aging population an ever increasing number of fans CANNOT READ THE BLASTED SUBTITLES!?!?!!!!!!!!@!

As much as I love the show, I have become so frustrated by the subtitles that I change the channel when I realize that, ONCE AGAIN, I am watching an episode that I cannot follow!

Please continue to spread the word.
