March 5, 2007: A Life of Meaning

New characters are coming into play faster than I can keep track. But I don't mind having Candice (Missy Peregrym) on board, because she has an edge that competes with Jessica's. She certainly welcomed herself with a set of eyes so devilish, I'm beginning to think she might even trump J's badass vibe. And her power is ridiculously brilliant. Seeing her disguised as Simone was a great way to introduce her "special" quality. But as far as we've seen, she definitely has no remorse or emotion at all. Isaac was out of sorts, naturally, but at least Simone's death produced another one of his paintings — someone had to save him from the cops or Linderman (Malcolm McDowell) wouldn't be able to collect the valuable comic canvases. I'm not sure what the latest painting was, though. It wasn't as clear as some of the previous drawings.

My favorite story is still Claire, who, according to Thompson is just "an assignment." He made it pretty clear that HRG is not the one who will go after Claire and The Haitian, and it's nice to see HRG as an inferior rank for once. I like that Mrs. Bennet knows everything, that he told her before he lost his memory. And it was nice to see a softer side of HRG, not to mention more scenes with his wife. Or, who we thought was his wife — Candice was everywhere! We're really beginning to see Thompson's powers, and I like that HRG is powerless at this point. Not completely, but enough to make him fall in line with orders he's against.

Claire was not a happy camper as Vivian Lewis from Canada. And I knew her request to see Peter would either land her completely lost or in the middle of the truth (but I guess that's the same thing, in this case). I was waiting for her to disappear. I thought she might run when she got out of the car earlier, but the airport was a much smarter place to go her own way. By the way, was The Haitian speaking Japanese on the pay phone? I couldn't tell from the brevity of his conversation. But, if we're to assume that Mr. Nakamura has a hand in the Organization, it's very possible. Or was he talking to Mrs. Petrelli, who we later learned knew everything all along? That was my favorite reveal of the night, and her coming face to face with Claire was the connection we needed between Nathan and his daughter (since her flame-igniting Mom was no help bringing them together). The look on Claire's face when she met her grandmother was perfect. How much more can she handle?

Speaking of retaining a lot of information, Sylar's pretty convincing, isn't he? When he told Mohinder to relax for a minute, even I believed him. Just as I had been losing faith in Mohinder, I saw a glimpse of hope when he served Sylar that tea, so disgusted with his traveling partner. "You're a parasite." Did anyone else notice the intense camera angles when Sylar was talking about Mohinder's father? I was captivated and it meshed well with Patient Zero's little speech. Even though Mohinder thought he had the power as he was taking Sylar's spinal fluid, his threatening whisper just wasn't convincing to me. Somehow, I find his attempt to be tough quite the opposite. But Sylar's escape was awesome. The IV, the arm restraints, the bullet hovering right in front of his face — I loved every minute of its creepiness as the tables turned.

And I'm glad we got to see more of Nathan's role in bringing down Linderman. Hiro's quieted "Flying Man!" had me laughing, and I love his enthusiasm whenever he sees Nathan. Seeing Felicity’s Ian Gomez as Linderman's curator was a little perk, too. When Lockdown Mode was activated and Ando showed up, it felt like the last car in the race finally caught up to the others — I was glad to see him, even though the goofy duo more often than not get into trouble. But finally, the sword is taken and Hiro's power has returned. Things were falling into place for him, until they were standing on that roof looking at the future of New York.

I'm still confused as to how Niki/Jessica's body works — where exactly the other personality is in that alternate dimension. Jessica thinks she's one of Charlie's Angels, and she was quickly making her way to Nathan. I was pleasantly surprised when Niki showed up in his room just in time to warn him. I guess Nathan had no reason not to believe Niki, considering he's got special abilities himself. Anything's possible at this point, right? Even meeting Linderman in the kitchen, of all places. I think I was just as confused as Nathan looked. I guess I was expecting some oversized office with a ridiculous view of the Strip and smileless expressions. But we even got chuckles out of the white-haired wise man. My favorite line: "Now you can't have any of my pot pie." I was sure Nathan wouldn't pull the trigger — unlike my uncertainty for Mohinder's rage — as he thought about having "a life of meaning"... something Peter's been struggling to understand this entire time.

Mohinder's blood dripping from the ceiling reminded me of the very first, and only, episode I saw of Supernatural, except Suresh wasn't dead yet. I wonder what Peter's fate will be after Sylar's invisible scalpel began its usual deadly slice as the hour came to a close. But I'm hoping his brain isn't stolen and he can actually stop Patient Zero from "sinking his teeth in." After all, there have to be more Petrelli family reunions in the near future and Uncle Peter should really be present, don't you agree?

Note: Check out NBC.com for cast commentary on the idea behind last week's episode and read the new chapter of the online graphic novel to see HRG first discovering Claire in the fire we've all heard so much about.

I thought it was brilliant. My favorite episode so far. So twisty, and I fell for every single one. Such a ride! I was so invested...I was exhorting Mohinder to kill Sylar, so heartwrenching. Every minute someone is with Sylar is tense. The reveal of Nathan's mom was awesome. I love Haitian guy! Who knew Claire was such an adept pickpocket? That was a clever move, but it was even more fun to have her show up and Haitian guy waiting there, with the suddenly interesting Mrs. Petrelli. Though, to be fair, it makes sense, she did have two kids with it, and there is a genetic component. Not to say I say it coming, b/c I totally didn't. Linderman was fun and interesting. I, too, knew Nathan couldn't do it. Linderman's a normal (-ish) guy, he's not the supervillian Sylar is, I wouldn't really root for his death (plus, that'd take all the fun out of it...we just met!)

Issac's painting was of himself, after Sylar killed him. (as shown in the Hiro future in the second episode) If you watch carefully, you'll see that in the painting, there are other paintings and brushes.

Ando's appearence made me laugh, then gave me a headache. I do not want to think how he became a security guard for Linderman...

Speaking of Linderman, he reminds me of the Devil as in several old movies about Southern culture; a quiet, very bearded man. It's quite appropriate.

Peter and Sylar...Peter will likely use Claire's power to heal through the telekinetic mindsaw (my personal nickname). I always wonder what would happen in that case...

Also a note on the graphic novels: They appear the day after each episode, which included the novel you mentioned, Megan. So there will likely be a new one tomorrow.

I loved this episode. It was a great way to go into a little break. I was just wondering if it was just me, but did anyone else start laughing when Peter's bangs fell to the floor? Don't get me wrong, the ending was amazing and I can't wait until the show comes back, but those bangs have been one of the biggest and longest complaints I've read and seeing them fall to the ground was simply hilarious!

The showdown between Peter and Sylar better not be anticlimatic. With the powers Peter has accumulated (healing, telepathy, flight, invisibility, and heat), he can be a formidable match for Sylar. Oh please let there be a huge smackdown. We just have to wait until April for new episodes to air which sucks.

Well, after watching X-Men 3...I'm kinda skeptical at the integrity of superhero vs. supervillan battles.

What heat power has Peter absorbed? You mean the radiation guy? Cause Pete hasn't actually encountered him yet; largely because it could come into play with the big melt down if Pete is the one to go nuclear (which he believes he is the one responsible) But give his lack of control up until recently, if he had already encountered Ted, it'd probably be over now.

I was wondering when someone was going to mention the bangs. I got a kick out of that.
Great episode. Totally unfair to make us wait though. To quote Gob Bluth, "Come on!"

I came specifically to comment about the bangs. I laughed out loud too. I love that Sylar haircut. Hopefully Peter will be able to heal his head but NOT regrow his hair. LOL

I believe the Haitan was speaking French on the pay phone -- apparently to Momma Petrelli. Since she's apparently in on everything, I'm guessing she has a connection to Lindeman too -- more than just the fact that her husband was his lawyer.

The Haitian was speaking French. I'd forgotten that is the language of Haiti. It's been a long time since I had a Haitian roommate during college.

Could this be the scar that future Hiro mentioned to Peter on the subway?

I'd say definately...

But, many episodes later, that little bit of information now creates a paradox. If Peter can heal himself with Claire's power, how exactly does he get a scar? Wouldn't he just heal it?

Awesome episode! I thought it helped a lot more to spread the episode out with a majority of the characters. Lately, too many of the episodes have focused only on a few characters, while not even including others and their storylines. Seeing as more of the people are becoming connected it will be interesting to see a lot of them intertwined in one episode.

There was a lot in tonight's episode that was a long time coming. Hiro finally getting the sword (and his powers), the reveal of Linderman, Mohinder finally realizing he was with Sylar, and of course the ax-ing of Peter's bangs! That was just a perfect, and hilarious, way to end with a cliffhanger. While the episode was stellar, I am not happy at all that we have to wait almost 2 months for the next new chapter!

FuturePeter from FutureHiro's world was when Claire died, maybe that's why FuturePeter had a scar because he didn't meet the cheerleader to save her?

Am glad the haircut happened. Finally!

As upset as I was about Sylar's overpowering Mohinder and capturing Peter, the tension was definitely lightened a bit when I saw those bangs fall. It was like, okay this is a really bad situation, but... giggle...

I don't think they can kill Peter right now because he's the one who is the bomb and destroys the city, isn't he?

I'm also looking forward to seeing all the Petrelli's super-dysfunctional reunion.

No more episodes until April?!?! :_|

Great episode.

I had myself a couple of giggles. Of course, the bangs. We all must have had a good laugh over that one.

The other was of my own making. When Nathan was with Linderman I kept wondering what he'd have to do to make a quick getaway, and I imagined him flying around the room like a balloon with the air let out of it..until he could find an exit of some sort. Just me being weird!

Poor HRG. He's really been taken down quite a few pegs, huh?

I'm rarely taken by surprise but the one surprise for me was Mrs. Petrelli opening that door and knowing Claire. I figured she was a baddie or something odd, but didn't see this coming.
