February 12, 2007: All We Can Do Is Run

Tonight, everyone had a different agenda, and of course, plans went awry and things got messier than they already are. And what would a Heroes episode be without some murders? I wouldn't want any of these people chasing me... that is, unless I had a power of my own. But there was a departure from the heroes using or testing their powers tonight, with the exception of Sylar (and he's no "hero" in my eyes). More on him later....

The episode picked up right where it left us last week: with Nathan. He knew nothing about Meredith (Jessalyn Gilsig) surviving the fire and offered her $100,000 to keep her mouth shut. Hey Nate, I'll keep my mouth shut.... Do you hear me? Meredith's not even truthful! She only offered Claire $25K. She really creeps me out — her high, eerie voice doesn't help to convince me otherwise, either. At least Nathan has a heart and feels responsible, even though he's clearly afraid of getting involved and actually being a father to a new daughter. But I like seeing a softer side of him, even if his mother disagrees. "Beneath the gruff exterior, you're a sap." Well gee, Mrs. Petrelli, what a nice way to support your son.

Meanwhile, I've grown to love Hayden Panettiere's portrayal of Claire. And I like how she approaches HRG hesitantly now, with eyes of steel and a look of constant disappointment. Her adoptive mom doesn't even know Claire is now protective over her, creating sort of a twisted alliance and forcing HRG to seem even more removed. "You're not my real father." You could feel the anger sizzling between her teeth. Claire's story gets more tragic by the episode: Her "dad" is shadier than the trees outside her window, her real father doesn't want to meet her, her adoptive mom can't even remember who she is now, and her flame-producing biological mother is a lying hideaway who makes most of us shiver. If that isn't a sad teenage story, I don't know what is. I guess being a cheerleader isn't all it's cracked up to be.

It was good to see Greg Grunberg back tonight. He may be a "glorified babysitter," but there's something endearing about his character — maybe because he can't physically show people his power as well as other heroes can? His frustration draws sympathy, from me at least. And although I like Niki/Jessica's story line the least, I'm glad she's finally tied in with a hero besides D.L. and Micah again. We haven't seen her connection to Linderman since the beginning of the series, so at least something was circling back around to keep the story together. Little did she know someone was reading her thoughts while she was chasing Malsky (Kevin Chamberlin) around. I'm getting tired of her smirk — I just want to wipe it off her devilish face. Her strength is something to be reckoned with, though. Tossing Matt out that window looked as easy as throwing a baseball. I thought we were going to lose him for a second, but I'm glad he's still standing, even if he has to hear mean thoughts like, "He can't even make it as a rent-a-cop." Keep the diamonds, Parkman! Show them what you can do.

Mohinder returned as well this week, but he wasn't having much luck with calling people on The List, until Zane left him a message. But when Sylar showed up in Virginia Beach before Mohinder, I cringed at the thought of another opened skull and stolen brains. Sylar is one sneaky killer. He sure puts on a nice face pretty quickly. There was a spark of evil hope in his lying eyes when Mohinder told him how many others could be out there — how many other powers are floating around the planet, waiting to be captured. Melting things into a liquid puddle is pretty cool, but he's clearly not satisfied yet.

Back in Vegas, Ando didn't have to look far to find Hope. And Hope... well, she was just the ticket into Linderman's world and that was enough to convince the constantly bickering pals to go ahead with her plan. This provided for yet another great scene between Ando and Hiro. "Stop saying things I said to you!" But Hope's waterworks led the duo right into another heap of trouble. Hiro gave me a brief laugh with his "I come in peace," but I don't think that will help him out of that storage closet or any closer to that sword he's eager to find.

I did miss Peter and Invisible Man this week. I was getting used to their love/hate relationship, but there are just too many people in this show to squeeze in every episode, and with all the pieces of this puzzle scattered all over the card table, we've got a long way to go before a picture is clear enough to decipher. A full picture, anyhow. It looks like next week will bring bigger moments and familiar faces. Can Isaac paint quickly enough? Will Simone find Peter? Will Peter cut his freakin' bangs? Whoops, I got off track there.

Nevertheless, we're really in the thick of it now. Mohinder's got Sylar on his trail, Claire's losing family left and right, and New York City is still expected to explode in the near future. Man, that's a lot to digest on a Monday.

Bill Faggerbakke (Dauber from Coach) didn't look like he aged that well. And something's still a little odd with him. Why would someone from the Gaming Commission have a sniper rifle in his room?

So now Mo is running arouond with Sylar - where is Soccer Boy when you need him? He's repeating his father's mistake - the only resolution that I can see is for Peter to come back and identify Sylar.

And for her next target, Jessica is going after Nathan - but we already know from Hirp's trip to the future that Nathan will be around long enough to win he elecion

I find Meridith's deterioration really disturbing. I hope she really is faking and starting to catch on to H.R.G. I read that theory in a blog I like at Heroes TV Spoilers Blog. As for Matt, if he really is keeping the diamonds, he is going over to the dark side. It could be a whole lot more interesting than he's been so far. Is Ando on the dark side? Now that would be a great twist.

Do we know that Jessica is being sent to kill Nathan? Who knows, there could be another reason.

SPOILER ALERT!!

Well, next week we lose a Hero. I'm really bummed. Unlike Eden, we've had a chance to get to know these guys better and I hate to lose any of them. And only 2 weeks left to save New York. Things should really start speeding up after this.

I thought it was a good episode. Having Matt and Jessica face off was cool. I don't blame him one bit for keeping the diamonds, but I think it's gonna come back and bite him on the tush.

Poor Mr. Muggles. He lost his mommy too. And where is kid brother Lyle? he's part of the family as well. HRG, you have a lot to answer for.

I'm trying to think of a good use for the turning toasters into liquid power. Certainly would get you a job in a steel factory, but how can this gift be used for good or evil? Melting buildings? Melting parking meters would be fun. Making jewelry. Becoming a welder. Melt the zipper on HRG's pants while he's wearing them? Ouch!

I have a question.

If this bombing and probable saving of New York is happening this season, then what's going to happen for future seasons? It seems as though these Heroes have been coming together for the saving of New York, but in order for this to be a long-lasting story for several years to come, there must be more to it than that.

And if this is going to be dragged out for future seasons, even to next year, then I think I'll get bored. So, I'm just going to imagine that, like LOST, we'll just see more mysteries to be solved by a united force of Heroes in the future.

Even though there were tons of good scenes tonight, I found it to be just a little bit boring. I like how we rarely go an hour without learning something new, though, and tonight's eppy did not disappoint.

:( I wish I could read the other comments people post to see what everyone is thinking but it seems spoilers abound. At least people put alerts up which I appreciate!

I felt really bad for Claire tonight. She's got nobody to turn to. I do think HRG cares for her though, he seemed really upset when Sylar wanted to kill her. Sylar is super freaky. He scares me whenever he's on screen. His eyes are vacant yet you can see a twisted pleasure in there as well. I adore Ando and I really hope Hiro and Ando stay together throughout the show. They sort of remind me of Larry and Balki from Perfect Strangers. Just always together and meant to be together. And wow, I'd kill for Hope's legs. I also don't like the Nikki storyline. Just pick a personality and stick with it. It's annoying at this point. I tell ya, I wish I had a power. The power to watch first run shows AS they air but somehow skip the commercials. THAT would be a power.

Am I the only one getting a "Manchurian candidate" vibe from Nathan and his mother--without (as far as we know) the brainwashing or implied incest? At least she let him marry Heidi--but I guess Heidi was a "Jackie" and Meredith was a "Marilyn."

I too loved Hiro's "I come in peace." He's just so cute! Now he needs to be able to bend space!

Yes, melting things such as safe doors and cops' guns could be VERY useful. It could be used for good, too, to free trapped people from wrecked cars. Somehow I can't see Sylar doing that!

I missed Peter (is it legal to have an episode without him?), Isaac, Simone, and Claude Rains. And they're adding more people? What are they thinking?

Although I can't blame Matt for keeping the diamonds (and I had a hard time understanding some of the thoughts he read), I agree that it will come back to bite him in the butt.

Poor Claire. My heart aches for her, her mother, & even Mr. Muggles. They went too far. That's tragic. (Now I wouldn't mind at all if they used that on Nathan's mother. . .)

It's weird - even though it is sickening to watch Claire's life fall apart, I still can't help feeling sympathetic towards HRG. I feel that he really loves his family, and that his whole life has sort of spiraled out of control in a way he never intended. I don't feel like he has the power to really make decisions for himself - we saw him make phone calls to someone he seems to answer to.
As far as Meredith and Nathan go, I'm confused. Nathan seemed to know Meredith was blackmailing him, yet when it's just the two of them in her trailer, he starts talking about how the money is to make up for what he owes her and his daughter? Did he just assume that she was decent and would give some, or most of the money to Claire? And even though she offered some of the money to Claire (which I guess, really, she didn't have to), I think she'll be causing much more trouble soon.
And I agree that Hiro and Ando are the best duo! No matter what trouble they get into, they always manage to make the situation funny.

It's ironic that on a show where people can fly, transmute objects and turn invisible, Malsky's storyline is the most unrealistic. The man is middle-aged, overweight and has asthma. Why would he steal from Linderman? Did he not get the memo about what happens to those people? D.L. and Niki stole the same amount of money and they didn't get far. Now Matt's in the same boat. I'm sure it won't take long for Matt, his wife and unborn child to get targeted by Linderman's goons.

Sort of wish that Ando could've been right about Hope. Figures, just when he starts believing in himself (and his "non-powers") he ends up getting duped.

I was hoping that Meredith wouldn't turn out to be trailer trash when she was introduced, but we can see that she is. The least she could've done was be honest about the hundred thousand. She probably only took the picture to get more money from Nathan (who seemed to recognize Claire without letting it slip).

Imzadi - Your "Manchurian Candidate" reference was spot on. I don't think Big Bad Momma has ever been that distant to Nathan before. But then again, Peter is the one she loves most. The way the camera zoomed in on her ring and her face in the compact, there was something very ominous about that scene. If Mamma Petrelli turns out to be Linderman I wouldn't be surprised. I've always felt her husband was murdered and the suicide was part of a bigger plan (maybe to get Nathan in office).

Say what you want about Sylar, the man knows how to think on his feet. He made the kettle whistle to excuse himself to get Zane's sample. I would guess that most people expecting a "Dr. Mohinder Suresh" wouldn't let someone looking like Zachary Quinto inside without a few questions first. But Zane obviously had a few "problems" so I can understand why he would be trusting enough to unlock his gated door.

I also loved Hiro's "I come in peace" comment, but I also got a good chuckle out of Hope calling him Sulu as an insult. Clever stuff there.

Charliy - You are right, Bill Faggerbakke hasn't aged that well, but he gets bonus points for voicing one of my favorite TV characters, Spongebob Squarepants sidekick Patrick.

Doesn't it say, "someone dies, someone flies." SO it doesn't necessarily mean that a hero dies. It could be Claire's adopted mom that dies, and then Nathan flying away from Nessica (nicki/jessica) when she tries to come after him. That's my guess.

I was reading the comments and came across something about Nathan recognizing Claire - WHOA! My memory is failing a bit - did he meet her in Texas during the whole "save the cheerleader" thing?! Now THAT would be interesting ...

As for Niki/Jessica - my whole family was groaning almost the whole time she was on screen. We are so annoyed with that whole story - Niki trapped in mirrors and reflections in glass ... ugh. And what happened to Micah's uncanny ability to be able to tell Jessica and Niki apart? He appears to think nothing is wrong with his mom ... I say the writers either get it in gear and merge Niki/Jessica or kill her off - I'm hoping she's the next "hero" to die ...

And apparently there are serious repercussions for having your memory altered so many times ... HRG may be shady, but we still don't know who he works for -

Mrs. Petrelli as Linderman?! Oh, that one made me laugh - and then I paused, thinking hhhmmmmmm ...

bobby_j: You must have Matt's power because you said everything that I was going to say. I mean everything. Why did they keep showing the rings of Nathan and his Mother? That was strange.

Claire is my favorite character and I feel so bad for her. I think she will try and find Peter now and then she will meet Nathan. That will be cool.

Someone mentioned that they introduce new people. But they(Sylar) kills them before we get to know them. They are not around for to long. And if Sylar gets to many more powers he will be unstoppable.

I hope Hiro gets his powers back soon.

One more thing, bring on Linderman soon!
