Guiding Light's New Format
They've already begun to slowly incorporate these changes, but officially beginning Feb 29th, Guiding Light will have a new format that hopes to update the show. They will use real buildings, outdoor locations, natural lighting, hand-held cameras, etc. all to try and make the show seem more realistic and less old-fashioned soapy. Check out this article for further details. I'm surprised no one has thought of this before! Props to TPTB on Guiding Light!

The new lighting is horrible. I really don't want to see every skin blemish on every actor. This is a soap opera not some homeless sidewalk act. I have enought reality already. Don't need it in the tv also! Are they using it as a way to "update" the series or is it a budget cut? With everyone already living at the Beacon, except Harley who carries on in the wall-boarded bedroom, you'd think the budget for sets has already been cut! Stop with the hand held at least! It makes me dizzy.

Oh. Well, I guess from what I've seen fans are still kinda on the fence. Though I think the addition of a new opening might help to sway people - they needed one desperately!

Just returned from vacation and was most disappointed to view tapes of Guiding Light. The "new technology" seems to be a giant leap back. I no longer watch the "wacky Wednesday" episodes since they began and will probably abandon the program with this change. This is a slap in the face of the technology developed over the years as the picture is dark and the program looks as if filmed by children who found the family movie camera. There might have been a reason the program was filmed the same way for 50 years. It worked!! I will have to find another program to fill my afternoons after all the years GL has kept me watching. Bert and Bill Bauer must be turning in their graves.

I've been watching the show on and off since 1974. It's gotten really bad in recent years. Now it's completely unwatchable. Even if the story lines pick up and start to make sense, the music is so distracting I can't focus on what the characters are saying. I'm delighted that Ricky Paull Goldin bolted for AMC, which has improved a lot by FIXING THE STORYLINES. As for the new "look", it looks like a cable access show. And not in a good way. I love the actors (mostly), but I'm done with GL forever. I actually miss Passions, which was better than this mess. Take a hint from the ratings, guys.

I have been watching Guiding light for a number of years, but this new format is horrible, makes you dizzy at times with the shaking cameras, the close ups where you can see the pores and wrinkles on the actors. I have started watching another soap on another station who is not using this format. Sorry I had to stop watching GL, but when and if they go back to old format, I may reconsider.

After 50 years I too have stopped watching GL. The camera work makes me ill, like watching poorly done home videos, and the sound quality is often horrible. I enjoyed this show for so many years but can't physically stand to watch any more.

I have been a Guiding Light Fan for years, going all the way back to when my mother used to listen to it on the radio and I would be sitting at her side listening with her when I was a little girl. When TV came into being and soaps were but just 15 minute programs I really became hooked. When I became a single Mom, and video recorders came into being, I started recording Guiding light and looked forward to it every evening when I got home from work. I am not sure whether I like their new format of being outside, the scenery is pretty, but I must say Guiding light's story lines really suck these days and are far from realistic. If they do not improve soon I am afraid they are going to loose this fan of more years than I want to confess to. Come on folks, bring in some new blood and quit the bed hopping back and forth between the same people all the time, it is getting just a little sickening. I know soaps are all about sadness and drama, but lets have at least one happy couple and some real story lines with some substance.I used to enjoy Harley and her spunk and humor, they have turned her into a melodrama back stabbing hussy, and come on. If Olivia is going to die, let her die, her need to have a fake wedding with Gus, how stupid is that, and who in their right mind would loan out their husband like that. My Oh My, I could go on and on but I won't. Truly I am really considering just not watching it anymore. Please do something. Guiding Light used to be worth watching, now it is just a waste of my time.

As far as I am concerned, The Guiding Light has hit rock bottom. First there is that stupid background music, then the story line, then the jerky movement from one scene to another and last but not least, it is simply ugly. Maybe by comparing it to The Young And The Restless I sat the standard too high. John

I have been watching Guiding Light for 40 years. At first I hated the new format.....but the camera angles are improving. Keep working on the angles. the shaking of the cameras are diffiuclt to watch. We need to see the actors faces more. Bravo,,,,magnificent..outstanding story with Olivia. I am glued to the show daily. I most like how characters move from scene to scene in a moments notice. This realistic portrayal of life has me watching daily. Dinah has shown surprisingly acting abilities that make her shine in front of the camera. I can see her move to the big screen. Love the bar scene with Alexandra Spaulding...classic. Please stay with this format. I love it!!!!Thank you

I have been a fan of GL for YEARS. I even purchased a TV so I could watch it in my car when I work. I really am disappointed in the new format and will not watch it anymore. Besides, the story lines are pretty lame as well.
What is up with the CBS soap? I guess I'm going to have to go back to NBC.

THE NEW FORMAT IS HORRIBLE. my husband came in one day and it was on and he couldn't believe it - the camera's reminded him of a (and excuse me for saying this) but a bad pornography movie.. and he's exactly right. I wish they woudl go back to the old format or do somethign to adjust the camera, you see every blemish, its unsturdy, sound is bad too.. its just awful. I really don't care for the settings either, its kind of seems dumpy where everyone is living. I love the show and characters, but the cameras and sets are kind of making me loose interest. One more thing.. sorry for saying this - but wow are Reva's boobs huge or what.. i guess if you got it flaunt it.. but holy cow, leave a littel to the imagination Reva!!! especially at a wedding!!!

I've never posted on here before and haven't that much anywhere, but I have read a lot about fans not liking the new format. I thought I'd say that I don't mind it and have even gotten to like it. I have not noticed the camera being shaky, but I get pretty involved in the storyline. The only thing I thought was odd the first couple of days was that scenes outside and scenes in the Spaulding house seemed slow and strange, but I am over that now. I have watched Guiding Light since I was old enough to remember and I am 35 now. There have been times that the storylines have been better or worse than other times, but I am still currently glued to the screen when it comes on. To me, the characters have always seemed easier to relate to than most other soaps out there. Anyway, just wanted to say I'm still loving Guiding Light.
