« The Golden Compass
Parents Please check into movie before your children see it
please see http://www.snopes.com/politics/religion/compass.asp
At the end of this trilogy the children kill GOD. This is something all parents need to be aware of before making the choice to let them watch this. I don't think it is fair to advertise this as a family movie when most American families would be deeply offended to know what they are getting into.. Just please check it out before heading out to the theaters.

how is this movie rated? I guess, older children will understand that this is a movie only (for entertainment purposes) and thus not reality

ALL movies are fiction and therefore not reality (even some documentaries!)
The killing of The Authority at the end o the trilogy is similar to the killing and resurrection of Aslan in the Chronicles of Narnia, depends how you see it. This story is set in an ALTERNATE universe and the books are fantastic. Extremely thought provoking.

I remember the movie "The Brothers Grimm". Some parents told me they were worried by the violence shown in this movie. I had to tell them that "Brothers Grimm" was never intended to be a movie for children. Like with "Narnia" the "Golden Compass" should be viewed by kids aged 10.

Many PG-13 movies are marketed as "family movies"; that should alert parents of potentially offensive material. Some children accept movies like "Golden Compass" as intended, some read more into it. That's where parental guidance comes into play.

Also the God depicted in the book is not the same as God in the Christian faith oh and if you actually read the book the children don't kill God their parents do so maybe you should read the book before you start bashing it.

Since it is rated PG13 I think it is safe to say that the kids who will wtach it can draw the line between fact and fiction.

Based on the weekend numbers, it's clear that most American families don't care. I know I don't. HOWEVER, that said, advising parents to know about what they let their kids watch is ALWAYS a good idea.
It is true that a substantial number (even if far from most) of American families will object to this, and any number of other movies, and I respect your willingness to take the effort to get the word out.

Parents should also be careful about letting their children see movies like "The Passion of the Christ" since it is overly violent, depicts an attempt to kill "God", and is based on faulty memory as well as inaccurate and speculative material which can be confusing to younger viewers.

What I find most amusing is that if I sent you back in time, oh say 2000 years or so, you would hear very similar things being said about another "Dangerous" book that sought to corrupt the minds of the youth. A book is a book, and a mind is a mind, so why are the Christian Right's minds so afraid of this book. Is their faith so weak that it cannot withstand an open debate and the introduction of new and different ideas? Pride and arrogance were always depicted as two of the most deadly sins....I cannot think of anything more prideful and arrogant than to assume that you have the correct answer and all others are wrong or have been duped by some grand conspiracy of the soul. So if you are afraid then don't see this movie, teach your children not to question or to think, that way it'll be easier for those of us that choose to explore and understand our universe and ourselves to control your little lambs of god (oops I meant sheep).

Don't be so quick to condemn the GC. It is true that it was written by an atheist, but it does have many spiritual ideas that are worth discussing. Some churches have even promoted the books as a means of talking about important subjects. I think that it warns against a dogmatic world view, where churches will brutally hurt people in the name of doing good. I think that's a good lesson to learn, whether you're Christian, Muslim, Jewish, atheist, whatever. And most of all, I don't think that reading this book will make your kid an atheist. Please. In the GC, people have souls, and they choose whether to do good or evil, and the main character is obviously good, brave, strong of heart, and compassionate. These are all things we can foster in our children.
But if we react to a movie or a book by speaking hatefully about it, with fear and loathing, then we teach our children something much more destructive.
