November 28, 2006: Knit One, Purl Two

Quick: What’s the first thing you think of when you see someone knitting? What about an entire town full of people knitting, huge balls of yarn in Stars Hollow Square, and Sookie cooking up balls of spaghetti speared with bread sticks? Okay, we get it. This one is about children. A little too heavy-handed this time around. (Meanwhile, what town actually holds a knit-a-thon to save a beetle-infested bridge? Don’t most New Englanders raffle off romantic swag like intimate candlelit dinners for two, midnight hay rides and weekend stays at cozy B&Bs?)

So, of course, Liz finally had her baby. I loved how Luke rushed right over as she was delivering — at home, natch. Did you catch that huge smile when he first held his niece, Doula? (With a name like that, I hope this kid will pack a mean punch on the playground.) I don’t think I’ve seen Luke that happy since he and Lorelai kissed on the gazebo the night they got engaged. Good thing, because holding that newborn finally lit a fire under his butt. I was pretty sure he wasn’t going to let Anna take April to New Mexico without some sort of argument. But I was not prepared for the big confrontation at Anna’s house. Could you believe how livid he was? He said all the right things — that April was his daughter too, that he has rights as her father, and that he’d fight Anna if he had to. Finally! (By the way, this was Scott Patterson’s best scene in... I don’t know how many episodes.) Now, if only Luke fought like that for Lorelai, maybe she wouldn’t be tiptoeing around Stars Hollow with her new husband Christopher, receiving chilly welcomes from Babette and Miss Patty. And she wouldn’t have to set Chris up on “man-dates” with Jackson, either. (By the way, when did he suddenly become Mr. Popular? I find Jackson slightly less grating than Taylor — and not by much. But I’ll give him props for the whole soil-and-crop chat at the bar. Chris was smart enough to figure out the analogy, and later parrot it back to Lorelai as his own. Smooooooth.)

Speaking of smooth: nice of Chris to put the kibosh on the knitting festival by throwing around his money, yet again. Yuk. Yes, it was generous to donate the $7,800 to meet the town’s 10-grand goal. But it also sent everyone packing after only a few hours. The bridge was saved, thanks to Chris’s trust fund — not the hard work of the dedicated Hollowites. When I look a little closer at the possible symbolism, I see a man who doesn’t want any more children. I wonder if Lorelai knows about this? I doubt it, since she’s too busy staging her own personal What Not to Wear episode, changing Chris out of his trademark tight clothes, reminding him go easy on the hair gel and sending him outside wearing a comfy outfit. Sounds like she’s treating him, let’s all say it together, like a child. We know he won't tolerate that for very long.

I just wish we had a chance to see Lane and Zack in this ep. The cool couple expecting twins should've been the only two in SH allowed anywhere close to knitting needles and balls of yarn.

Sooooo best episode this season since the season premiere! For sure! Definitely more like it! The whole town knit a thon was classic. The life was brought back into the show with how they showed the town in this episode. Like it once was. How Chris doesn't fit, how the money for the bridge didn't matter; the town just does quirky things bc that is the town. I felt that even last season, this was lacking and this episode brought Stars Hollow back to the GG. Taylor in his bright blue sweater, scarf, hat combo LOL, Chris and Jackson scene, important and really great! THe beginning with Emily and Richard, so funny! Rory's part of the episode, so funny! Paris and Doyle! The stuff with Marty so great. This episode had drama drama and drama, but then added the quirky fun flare that is the GG. I can't think of one negative thing to say about the episode. Great acting as always, especially Lauren (like always). Scott Patterson was amazing as well. So cute with the baby and yelling at Ana, ABOUT TIME! I really love how this story line is growing for him. Who ever wrote and/or directed (bc yes some of the past episodes were filmed weird) should be writing many more episodes to come! Did I say that this episode would change the pace of the rest of the season or did I say that this episode would change the pace of the rest of the season.

Meanwhile, what town actually holds a knit-a-thon to save a beetle-infested bridge?
STARS HOLLOW!...the little town we know and love

I was screaming at the tv when Anna was spewing all that absolute ridiculousness about how decisions about "her daughter" were "her decisions" to make. I was livid myself until Luke finally told her off. And what a great tell off it was! That was one of the most satisfying scenes on this show ever. I just wish it had happened last year because that's when I know the whole audience clued in that Anna was manipulative and selfish toward Luke about April, but better late than never. It was really hard to watch Luke be a slave to Anna's rules for over a year and I could not be more thrilled it's over. I may be wrong, but this episode felt like a turning point signifying that Luke will return to form and become the strong willed (if hardheaded), beloved individual he used to be. If so, I can't wait.

Welcome Back, Luke! We sure have missed you! Best episode of the season thus far. I'd really like to see Luke throw that much passion/emotion into a conversation with Lorelai. I'm so sick of that stupid black hat too! I miss ole' blue.

The writers are definitely on the right path. This season is playing out better than I thought it would considering the crap that was last season.

Time to eat some crow, all you doubters (I'm chewing as I type). Things have finally turned around with this epi. The writing seemed very crisp, and the characters seemed more true to form than they have in, like, forever.

I guess I need to be really hit over the head with symbolism sometimes 'cause I didn't get the knit-a-thon connection with babies/children. Duh. But I was nice to see the whole town come out for some wacky Stars Hollow high-jinks. Been a while. Of course, more than 30 seconds of Kirk certainly would have ramped up the comic quotient. Loved the "free needles...aren't we progressive" line.

Glad to see Luke finally finding his cojones. And even though it seemed as though Anna has been overbearing in regards to her daughter's relationship with him, wasn't it obvious at the end of Luke's tirade with that look she had that she had been testing him all this time? Let's face it, she hadn't seen him in years, and with the whole Lor-Luke situation her instinct told her that all was not kosher there. I think she was just being a good mom in not wanting April to get caught up in the middle of what was a tenuous relationship at best. I personally think she was waiting for Luke to show how much he loves his daughter and was looking for just this kind of reaction when she dropped this bomb on him. Good for him.

And Paris' dancing, how funny was that. She thinks she's all that in just about anything she sets her mind to. Gotta admire that kind of blind spunk.

So happy my show is back! Now more Lane and Zach, please.

The opening visit with Emily and Richard was by far the funniest thing I've seen on this show in weeks. I was literally laughing out loud and trying not to spit out my water. When they Emily played the answering machine message over and over again, I just kept on smiling.

Wow, what a great episode! I especially loved Lorelai's speech to Sookie about how the townspeople need to accept Christopher as her husband, even though they may have been rooting all along for her and Luke to tie the knot. It was as if the writers were saying directly to the grumbling fans, "hey, we're obvioulsy taking this show in a different direction than you expected, so deal with it! Lorelai is happy, so you should be happy for her!"
I couldn't agree more. The producers had a choice to either go the predictable route, and finish out the series with Lor and Luke together, or take a risk and head in the direction its going now. So far, I'm glad it chose the latter (although I know there is time for things to change yet again).
I don't mind so much if Lorelai and Christopher stay together, and Luke somehow keeps April in his life, so he can continue to be the happily doting dad. There should be other romantic fish in the sea for him anyway.

Hey, Robin, in knitting the term is 'knit one, purl two." Unless there were pearls in the episode that I missed. I could have.

Anyway, the part that I was happiest about tonight was Luke finally growing a pair and telling Anna off. I'm sick of all of her "my kid" crap. Even Lorlelai wasn't that selfish when it came to Rory and Christopher. I think if Christopher had wanted joint custody then she would have come to a compromise; but he was too immature at the time to do so.

This has been a great season. People need to sit back and watch the story unfold. Luke is still too slow to react but when he does it's great. I hope his fight for April turns into some fight for other things he wants in his life.
The rest of this season should be a wild ride.

David Rosenthal, GG head writer and exec producer said in an interview with TVGuide's very own Ausiello: "Luke and Lorelai are right now on separate journeys, but they are by no means forever separated."

Granted, that is slightly open to interpretation, but I don't think that Lorelai and Christopher are going to stay married. I do think that she needed to marry Christopher to finally put closure on the relationship and move on.

There are some other spoiler things I read that give the impression that Lorelai will come to strongly question her decision to marry Christopher.

It's about time Luke grew a pair and told Anna off...April's his daughter too and its not cool for her to have him watch April when it was convenient for her. What's the problem with April staying until the school year's over? I thought it was real sweet that Luke knew all about April's friends (allergy to peanuts, coin collection), just like a responsible parent would.

This was definitely the best episode so far this season. I didn't know how much I missed the quirkyness of the town until the knit-a-thon for the old bridge.

On a random note, I miss the troubadours that used to walk around town, setting the tone for the episodes with crazy bohemian music. Were they friends of SP? Where has all the music gone?

P.S. What's up with the CW and the American Eagle girls? Every week we are treated to absymally lame commentary.

I'm going to echo everyone else here and say that my favourite part of this episode was when Luke finally stood up for himself!!!!! It's about time!

And MareT, I think Lorelai is already questioning her decision to marry Chris. I can't wait to see what's coming up!

Hey there Angel Cohn, fellow TV Guider!

Totally agree about the answering machine message! (Though doesn't anyone have voicemail in this day and age?) Loved Lorelai's message: "Hey, we're back from Paris, Gigi's all settled in. Oh, and Chris and I um, got married. Well, talk to you!" And it wouldn't be Emily Gilmore if she didn't play it back in front of her daughter and new son-in-law THREE times. Those two are a lot more alike than they want to admit.

So now that Luke has threatened to exert his parental rights (I assume through the legal system), don't you think that someone will demand a real paternity test...? Just a thought.
