January 30, 2007: Letter Go

So, wouldn’t ya know it, Chris found The Letter. The one Lorelai slaved over, the one she wrote and rewrote, the one she finally banged out on a typewriter, the one she hid, the one she keeps calling a "character reference." Big diff, right? Well, actually it is. I wouldn’t exactly refer to Lorelai’s praise of Luke (“He’s honest, he’s decent, he’s kind, he’s caring…. Once he’s in your life, he’s in it forever”) as a love letter. Now that kind of thing would go on to say something like: “And I can’t believe I gave you that ridiculous ultimatum. When you said no and stormed off, I went straight to my ex Christopher’s house, slept with him, told you the next day while turning down your offer to get back together, then impulsively married my ex only a few months later, let him move into the house that you helped me rebuild and actually allowed Chris to put up a ridiculously ginormous plasma TV in the living room of my quaint and tastefully decorated Victorian-style home.” I didn’t hear any of those words as the judge and Chris read that letter at the same time. (That voice-over work was the best part of the entire hour.) So why was Chris so angry? More importantly, why was I so angry?

Maybe because back in the old days of, oh, last season, this show used to move so fast, I could’ve reached for a fat-free chip and missed someone getting pregnant. That’s what made Gilmore Girls so damned smart and so freaking good. (Did you catch that Sookie is knocked up? Because it only took two gigantic scenes to set that one up.) So I watched The Letter Scene two more times, just to make sure I didn’t miss something. You know, 'cause Chris was so mad, mad, mad! And guess what? I didn’t! Lorelai looked Chris straight in the eye and said “I am not in love with him!” And yet he still didn’t believe her. (She is, but that’s for another blog.) So, he stormed off and never came back that night. I’m not quite sure he had a good reason, but if this is the start of the breakup, then so be it. Oh, and if you weren’t sure, Sookie is having another baby!

Sigh. This ep was Lauren Graham’s debut as producer. It’s impossible to find her fingerprints, since there were a million other people listed with her. (Her name came up right after the credit for our beloved Amy Sherman-Palladino. Nice!) Producers, co-producers, executive producers. Too many cooks in the kitchen! Too many, and it shows. We could have done without the Paris scenes, the Sookie scenes, the Lucy scenes. All those side-stories used to keep us sharp throughout the hour. This time my head kept falling in the chip bowl. That is, until Richard’s heart attack at the very end. OK, so now you have my attention. Too bad you had to wake me up out of a face full of Fritos to get it.

Ok the Luke and Anna thing was way to serious for Gilmore Girls. I of course was in Lukes corner the whole time and wanted to hit Anna over the head with a baseball bat.

This episode was.. boring. Rory and Lucy are friends again. (who cares) But I did like Paris in the episode as its vintage Paris.

I am looking forward to next weeks show after seeing the promos.

Robin, I liked this episode. Paris was true to form. Loved how she came to Rory's defense in true fashion. Those charts were hysterical. Of course any scene with Paris is a treat.

Loved how Richard showed his love for his granddaughter.

Missed Emily.

And I think that with next week's episode everything will start to get back on track. Anyone else have any thoughts on that?

Robin, I've been very skeptical and bitter about the current season of the show. In my opinion GG has been off course for about a season and a half now-but finally tonight-I'm beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel (which makes me laugh thinking of Sookie's so-called 'light' that is a ways away now). Which is why I'm so surprised at your negative reaction to tonight's episode. Each time Sookie's been pregnant it's happened the same way--she never remembers the 'pregnant hormones feeling'. (Norman Mailer, I'm pregnant ring a bell?) Plus, she thought Jackson got a vasectomy! I thought it was nice to see how Lorelai interacts with Davy--I don't think we have seen too much of that in the past. So, granted tonight's plot was a little slow moving, but I'll take a slow plot leading towards a good story resolution over a fast moving plot leading to disaster any day. I can't wait to see how the whole Richard illness thing works out.

This episode was just okay. I loved the letter that Lorelai wrote, I enjoyed watching Lorelai babysit Davey and Martha(we can see why Rory grew up to be such a good kid every time we see L interact with kids that aren't her stepdaughter), I liked Paris getting in the middle of the Rory/Lucy conflict - although really I would have liked to have seen the last of Lucy. It was also great to have Sookie in the middle of things again (nice way to work in her real-life pregnancy). Still, I wanted it to be better.

I have hated the Chris/Lorelai romance from the second it was introduced last season and I still cringe anytime they are together on screen, esp. when they are kissing and "I love you"-ing all over the place. For all you Chris-lovers out there, I bet during the last few episodes you've hated seeing him turn back into the schmuck the rest of us knew he was. (And wasn't it convenient that little Gigi went to Grandma's for the weekend, so she wasn't underfoot?)

Unfortunately, I don't know how they are going to get Luke and Lorelai back together with less than half a season left. And at this point, even though I have been a huge L/L fan from the very beginning of the season, I don't know if they can ever truly be together after everything that's happened.

I'll be around to see what happens; I'm trying to be hopeful that they'll fix what used to be my absolutely favorite show.

I loved tonight's episode. I do agree with Robin in that it wasn't the most true to orignal gg, but I also definitely agree with this episode letting us see the light at the end of the tunnel. What Loralai said about Luke seemed so heartfelt and true. Plus the look on Luke's face when he heard what Loralai had to say broke my heart. He now realizes how important he is to her. Something I just realized was how she said he would always be in Rory's life, not her life. So she is still feeling true to Christopher which is nice since her goal is currently to stay with Christopher. I can't understand Christopher's point of view. This was not a letter addressed to Luke, but rather "To Whom it May Concern." Loralai did this so he could have a chance to be with his kid, which she knows is so important.

On a completely unrelated lightbeat note, I thought that their might have been mention that luckily gigi was sent off to her grandmothers. YAY!!!

Robin, do they actually pay you, you know, on the side NOT to mention Rory in your "reviews"? Seriously.

It would be funny, if it weren't quite so pathetic.

Yeah, I think you're being a bit too harsh on tonight's episode. For the most part, I enjoyed it -- hey, I even laughed. The Sookie parts were great because right from the beginning (muffin tops and all) I knew she was pregnant again. She showed all the same signs as in previous seasons.

I can see how you're disappointed in the new season, but I think you're off on the review of tonight's ep.

Was Rory in this episode? Oh yeah she was you just seem to never remember that. How can you write a review every week about the Gilmore GIRLS and never seem to write about the second Gilmore Girl? I just don't get it. I can understand if one week you don't write about her non-existant storyline, but you NEVER write about her story line EVER.

Did you even watch tonight's episode? You're so negative on Season 7 that you don't even pay attention to what's going on. The best episode of the year, and you don't even see it.

Oh, and congrats on your "Rory" mention in your review once again.

You need a new job.

Rory, Rory, Rory...

Okay. I admit it. I did not mention Rory in this week's column. Or last week's either. You are correct.

But go back and read through the rest of the season, and you'll find her there.

Let's also be honest: this season has been ALL about Lorelai. Her dating Chris, her marrying Chris, her possibly leaving Chris... The show is now centered around her life.

Rory has been playing second fiddle the entire time, mostly floundering her way through senior year with a boyfriend thousands of miles away. Nothing is really happening with her character. I'd like to see more done with her character. She's never in scenes with her mother anymore, which WAS the heart of the show. Now that's something I'd love to write about!

Thanks for the feedback.

Re: The Letter--Lorelai SHOULD have told Chris about the letter without him being surprised and hurt by it--he may have been mad had she told him when she wrote it or very soon thereafter, but he wouldn't have felt as betrayed as he did when he found it by chance.

Sure Lorelai hurt Chris through what she didn't say about him and his parenting abilities, but the letter was about Luke and showing that he could be a caring parent. If Lorelai had been up front about writing the letter in the first place, Chris probably would not have felt as insecure about his "place" in Lorelai's life.

Emily called Lorelai on her immaturity regarding relationships several weeks ago; she rightfully pointed out that marriage comes with its own set of "rules," and that you have to deal with the consequences of angering or disappointing your spouse at times.

Just wanted to point out that they were in all sorts of scenes together in the last episode. Last week was not a favorite episode of mine by far, but hey facts are facts.

I actually didn't mind that you didn't mention Rory in this week's column, I just don't think you should go into each episode with the idea that the show is so horrible and isn't worth your time. If you really feel strongly about it, then give up on the show all together. Don't watch it just to bash it.

In Robin's defense, I think she voiced a lot of our frustrations with the way this season has gone. I see it every week in the myriad of postings how people are unhappy with the way Lor is behaving, the whole Chris wedding deal, Rory's seeming loss of identity from who she used to be to what she has become in her relationship with Long Distance-Rich Boy Logan. So while I don't agree with everything she said, I totally got her "what Chris must have read into it" love letter diatribe. I mean, just when I was starting to feel sorry for him 'cause we all knew this was coming from a mile away, he goes flying off at the handle like a baby. Maybe what Lor had to say about Luke always being there for Rory was a little too close to home for him to take. Oh well, tough guy. The truth hurts, doesn't it?

So glad Luke got shared custody so we can move on from the Evil Anna phase of GG. I was afraid they were gonna turn my Girls into a version of "Judging Amy". Whew! Just get over that hurdle and boom! heart attack for Richard. Too many storm clouds over the town of Stars Hollow for my taste. But I'm here for the long haul, and I'm gonna slog through the heaviness that has befallen my favorite lighthearted show. It's just that I don't have the same anticipation and excitement that I used to when firing up the DVR. (Small tear in corner of eye). I REALLY MISS THAT!!!

I thought is was a pretty good episode. I'm looking forward to seeing where they go with this whole thing. I am a little confused as to the executive producer credit Amy S-P got. Is she still part of he show? I thought that when she left, she had nothing to do with the show.
