January 23, 2007: "It's a Big Bag of Weird in There"

Yep, that sentence can explain both Lorelai’s head and much of this episode. We waited seven weeks, seven long weeks for our Girls to return. So where were the Lorelai and Chris struggles, the Luke and Anna tension, the Rory and Logan misunderstanding? They must’ve disappeared in rerun land and were replaced by seven Christmas trees, Chris' hugely garish stockings and Gigi and Rory’s strings of cranberries and popcorn. OK, so Lorelai put Christmas on hold until Rory got back from London. She even did a dance with a coconut bra to make sure it didn’t snow. (And for real, it didn’t, not here in the Northeast. Maybe the bra worked.) Sure, that’s sweet. But this whole scenario would have been so much more charming, I don’t know, maybe two weeks after the holiday? But not an entire month later! It wasn’t Stars-Hollow quirky, it was Stars-Hollow bizarre. And so was Lorelai as she tried to write Luke’s character-witness letter. “Bicycle, unicycle, unitard, hockey puck, rattlesnake, monkey, monkey, underpants!” That’s what she was coming up with? I mean really. I can understand why she was so befuddled by his request — after all, she had to write wonderful things about the ex who got away. (When Luke formally shook her hand to thank her, her startled look was classic Lauren Graham at her best.) As much as she denied it, Lorelai had to dig deep to write that letter. That meant searching for her feelings, not turning into a blithering idiot. Good thing she was finally able to write the damn thing, hiding it from Chris the entire time. Which you know will blow up in her face.

Moving on…. Loved every second of Lane — so much so that I’m starting to hope for a Zack and Lane spin-off. “Is it not acceptable to be a plus-sized woman is this culture?!” she yelled at a customer who’d asked if she was pregnant. (Our little drummer girl is carrying twins, but she does seem a little too huge.) When the patron profusely apologized, she snapped, “Of course I’m pregnant!”, slammed the plates of food on the table and waddled off in a huff. Hilarious. And how sweet was Zack, showing Brian how to hold a baby using his mandolin, and consoling Lane when she got upset about having had only a short window of time to rebel. “Sonic Youth has a kid, and they rock. Mick Jagger has like 15 kids. He rocks hard and then, like, makes another kid.” Loved the way those two connected. Same for Luke and April, whose day of bonding was a pleasant surprise. Did you notice that April let Luke keep her microscope while Lorelai chose a telescope for Christopher? Can’t help but wonder if it meant Luke’s looking closely at the details of his life, while Chris' head is in the stars. That’s the best I could come up with, in an ep that seemed mostly like… a big bag of weird monkey, monkey, underpants.

Wow, you got this up quick. Anyway, I am getting really annoyed that Rory has not gone to see Lane (OK I'm sure she has seen her off screen but that doesn't count) She is only her best friend and she is pregnant with twins, you think she would want to help her out more then wanting to get back together with her super annoying friend.

It was a wierd episode all around. It seems they got the speed of the dialogue down okay, but did not know what to fill it in with. Have to love Mrs. Kim though. She always makes me laugh. I guess Chris finding the rough draft of the letter about Luke is what makes him go off in a huff and Luke helping Emily? One can only guess after tonight's episode. Any thoughts on maybe I am right?

I liked the idea of putting Christmas on hold until Rory's return, seems very much how Lorelai would think (and Luke seemed to understand). Lorelai's patter over how her mind was working while trying to write the letter is just how I have always imagined her mind to work, now it is just finally verbalized. Just seeing Lorelai and Rory together and bouncing ideas off of each other was a present in itself.

Luke and April - he is just trying to do what is right to ensure his future with her but even he couldn't resist spending the day with April but reinforced at the end that they have to follow the rules or jeapordize their future together.

As far as Lane - love her, always have but I have never understood her with Zach, I just don't see them as a match.

I do like the idea regarding the telescope vs the microscope. I feel like this episode was a return to episodes of old.

I actually quite enjoyed this episode. Maybe it was because Luke and Loralai actually had more than one scene together, or maybe it is the hope of what I know is to come. Great comments though and Laurie, I think you may be right about the letter.

The best part of this episode was the preview for next week! I did like parts of the show, but I'm still cringing every time Lorelai and Chris have any intimacy. I so hate the two of them together and I hope that all the spoilers are true.

I did like all the stuff with Lane and the pregnancy. I especially liked the part in the park when Zack calmed her down with his talk of being rocker parents.

I really would have liked to have seen some of Rory and Logan's time together in London, not just hearing a little bit about it from Rory. I may be in the minority, but I really like the two of them together.

Not the best episode, but it did make hopeful of things to come, so I'll be back next week!

I am looking at this as a jumping off point for the season...c'mon, that was exactly how her(Lorelai's) thoughts work (and mine too actually)...It seemed more to me about showing Lorelai exactly how much Luke was a part of her life and just how much she tried to put it in a nice neat box somewhere far away...Luke really was a father to Rory while Chris was finding himself.....i like Chris, i just see him as part of a life she no longer needs or wants-except for her parents....and i agree about Rory not visiting Lane...that is just plain stupid.

Luke and Lorelai have always broken my heart on this show: in the early years because it was always obvious that they belonged together, and later on when they were together because I knew Lorelai would mess it up. Now broken up Luke and Lorelai are even worse on my ticker.

The scene tonight in the mall when Luke listed all the bad presents he'd gotten Rory and the look on Lorelai's face when finally seemed to realize how imporant Luke had been to both of them just about did me end.

When they finally get Luke and Lorelai back together, I hope they stay that way till the show ends. My heart won't be able to take it if they don't.

The best part of the episode for me was Lane and Zach. Robin, you're right, twins or not, she was definitely too big. When's her due date supposed to be anyway? I would definitely tune into a Lane-Zach-Mrs Kim spin-off.

I have to admit that I always thought Lane would've been better off with Dave (before he went off to the OC), but Zach is growing on me. I love that Zach and Mrs Kim have bonded over keeping Lane and the twins healthy and happy, and I love Lane's crankiness over all things baby. For a minute I thought they were going for Lane-turns-into-crabby-Mrs-Kim-because-of-pregnancy, which would have been an interesting turn of events, but it does seem like they'll have neatly resolved her crankiness once they get a gig.

In the scene where Zach and Mrs Kim are talking about baby stuff, and the scene starts off with us just hearing their voices off-screen, my first thought was, finally! we get to see Mr Kim! I'm really hoping the writers will do *something* about the missing Mr Kim. If he's alive, then why would he miss his only daughter's wedding and the birth of his first grandchildren? By the way, how great would it be if the babies were born on Asian New Year (ie, right in time for February sweeps)?

But as annoyed as I am about the missing Mr Kim, I was even more annoyed that in all her Christmas shopping, Rory didn't stop by once to see her best friend, even though she walked past Luke's several times. She didn't get her best friend a Christmas present, or even mention her in passing. Why wouldn't she ask Lane for advice on how to mend fences with Gina, I mean, Lucy?

What bothered me all episode is that in typical I'm-so-quirky-and-cute-but-really-I'm-just-being-a-lousy-[step]mother manner, Lorelai forced Gigi to to wait weeks for Christmas. How cruel is that to do to a little kid? And how much clearer proof can Gigi get that Rory is valued far more than her half-sister in the Gilmore house?

I have been a fan of GG for years. I own seasons 1-6 on DVD and have watched them many times. I have never said anything very negative about this show, even through the fall season this year. But here goes...

This episode was crap. It was the worst one I've ever seen. Sure, Rory and Lorelai talked quickly, but they didn't say anything! And I thought the scene with Chris and the stockings he bought and the talk about traditions was like a bad high school play. That's the only comparison I can come up with. Go back and watch it and you'll see what I mean.

I love Lane and Zach, but I expected a bigger, funnier resolution. Just talking about rocker parents was kind of weak in my book. Still, it was one of the better parts.

Luke and April together were pretty cute. Gigi, on the other hand, was just annoying. I agree with whoever said they felt sorry for her. I mean, did the kid not get any presents on December 25?

The ending of the show with Lorelai and the letter was intriguing...I am looking forward to next week despite the horrible dialogue in this episode.

This episode seriously lacked some Paris and Emily.

Sorry to be so negative....I usually hate it when people are....but I can't help it. Last night was bad.

My thoughts exactly. The absolute best scenes in the episode were those with Lane and Zack. Was that really Sebastian Bach's son in the episode? They say comedy is dead on television, a show with Zach, Lane and Ms. Kim would be frakking hillarious. COME ON CW WAKE UP!!!!!

The really strange scene was the scene with Luke and Michel. It was odd but both actors played the discomfort perfect.

Glad its back.

I must agree for the most part with bluz ... last night was bad. The only parts that I found at all interesting were the Zach and Lane (and the band) scenes --- giving those folks a spin-off would be about the only way to salvage this season for me, at least as it's been played out so far.

I don't personally like the Luke and April scenes, but they are head and shoulders better than any scene with Gigi in it. I swear, it seemed at times as if Lauren Graham was in the middle of a scene, noticed that there was this new little cast member there, and thought to herself "Where did you come from? And why?". I'd be happy for Chris to move out just to take Gigi with him.

BTW, has Sookie made it out of the kitchen at the Inn at any point this season? She seems like a complete after-thought to the show at this point, vs. Lorelai's best friend and partner.

I've never thought Gilmore Girls could become boring, but last night it was teetering right on the edge for me. Hopefully next week will snap someone out of their funk.

Lane was WAY too huge. She looked like she was hiding a Hippity Hop under her dress.

I think that Lane appearing so big is more her perception of how she feels being pregnant with twins and the stares and comments from others.
