December 12, 2006: Whoopee!

Here's a rerun you didn't want to miss. I am tempted to go off on Luke for his horrendous comments when he ran into Lorelai on the street: "It's not as big a deal for me as it is for you. So we're not getting married. It's fine by me. You're the one who proposed in the first place." Ouch!

But you know what? Enough agita. I'd rather talk about Lane and Zack, Stars Hollow's best couple. Naturally Pedro's Paradise turned out to be anything but... the poor couple spent their Mexican honeymoon in Pedro's dirty apartment, nowhere near the beach, overlooking an ad for Mexican nasal spray (of all things). I'm surprised a control freak like Lane actually let Zack plan the honeymoon in the first place, but we'll let that one slide.

If that's not bad enough, Lane is convinced that her mother was right about sex all along, "that women are maintaining this pervasive media-supported charade, that sex is normal, that sex is wonderful, that sex is sexy." You too would think sex was pretty awful if your first time involved cold water, mud, crabs (the crustaceans, not the STD) and a perverted snorkler watching while you were trying to re-create the beach scene in From Here to Eternity. Yuk. (I like Rory's advice: Try a bed next time. Yep, they only did it once.)

The kicker? Lane ends up preggers! ("That's what you get for making whoopee, folks!") I loved how Rory consoles her by naming bad celebrity mothers (Britney, Courtney), then making fun of all the ridiculous celebrity baby names in vogue these days. "I wonder if Blanket ever met Tom and Katie's pillow? That would be a good play date. They'd be totally set at naptime. Then they can invite Gwyneth's Apple over for a snack. Afterwards, Rachel Griffiths' Banjo can play for them. Then they can jump into Mia Farrow's Satchel and make fun of what's-his-name? Pilot Inspektor Lee!" Old-school Gilmore banter at its best.

But you know what? Lane might not know what a pram is, or how to change a diaper or why mothers test formula on their wrists. But she and Zack will become Stars Hollow's coolest young parents, dressing their twins in tie-dye onesies and Ramones baby tees. Hey, I'd babysit.

I rewatched it too, and although you don't want to risk angina or agita, I'll repeat my stand, I agree with Luke!

I will NOT admit how much you hurt me and will put up a brave front every time we run into each other.

Now, as far as Zack and Lane.

Poor Zack, not only does he have to deal with an iceberg of a mother in law, but an equally frosty and frigid wife. BRRRRRR!

I hope Rory will convince Lane that making whoopee is fun or that will be a short marriage.

Maybe oversexed Miss Patty can give a lecture on the joys of sex during the next town's meeting. :-p

Robin, I want to say that you officially have no right to continue to bash the new writers of Gilmore Girls. All season you have been looking for any reason to say they're not as good as the show's creator, but in your review of this episode, a re-run of one of the earliest in the season, you called it, "Old-school Gilmore banter at its best."

You need to accept that the last season or two of Gilmore Girls has been nowhere near as good as the first few years, and it is finally getting good again. THANKS TO THE NEW WRITERS!

Julie,

Quite honestly, I do not know what you are talking about. The last time I wrote about this episode when it first aired, I did it college-style, offering various theories for the Luke and Lorelai breakup. I didn't bash the writing, and I never have.

If anything, I've been a huge proponent of PATIENCE, of allowing the writers (and especially the production staff) to settle in and take us through the season! I'm the one telling everyone to hang in there, to give the new staff a break and fair chance to finish out the show. In other words, keep watching and don't give up.

If anything, in this past blog, I was complimenting David Rosenthal on his ability to recapture that great Gilmore banter Amy Sherman-Palladino did so well. What's the harm in that? I think you've misunderstood what I wrote.

Please read my column again. I think something got lost in your translation. And feel free to look at the others too, they're all archived under the Gilmore Girls heading.

Thanks for writing in.

Dave,

Jan 23!!! Can you believe we have to wait that long!

Sometimes I'll be writing about reruns, sometimes not. So keep an eye on the website for my blog, and as usual, check out Ausiello for Gilmore scoop. He's always in-the-know.

Thanks for writing in!

Hey Robin,

Where's my "thanks for writing in" :-p

I have to say that this season of Gilmore Girls is getting better and better with each episode and I cannot wait for the new ones. I have this theory that the way they are going to get rid of Chris is that Sherry is going to say she wants to keep GiGi there with her and since Chris more or less abandoned Rory, he is not going to do it again. He will give Lorelai an ultimatum and she will decide to stay in Stars Hollow (where she belongs). That will clear the road for she and Luke to make their way back to eachother.
At least I hope :-x

what no one has mentioned, is that Lorelai and Christophert are NOT legally married!!!Check the requirements for marrying in France-residency, civil ceremonies, etc. Sure glad she didn't go thru with a ceremony at her parents!!!
