May 1, 2007: Girl Power

We have just witnessed the power that is Gilmore. Who else could turn a reckless, rakish, rebellious little rich boy into a responsible, polite, mature grown man? And who else could make a rough, hardened, jaded tough-guy tear up over a love song? Yep, those are our girls!

So Logan is going to ask Rory to marry him! And he actually went to Lorelai’s house to ask her permission. Now, usually I would write this off as one of his typical smooth moves. But you know what? He had me at “I came here to see you, Lorelai.” This wasn’t just some old-fashioned formality. He really, really wanted her approval. And he thought he’d get it. After all, they’d just bonded over late-night pie and ice cream. She told him she believed he had cleaned up his act, that he didn’t need to convince her anymore. But there’s one teeny-tiny problem: Lorelai’s reaction. The last time we saw that devastated look was when she woke up next to Christopher, not Luke. (That brilliant final shot has to finally earn Lauren Graham an Emmy nod.) So what is it? Was she caught off guard? Did she realize that the two Gilmores will no longer be one? Or does she feel deep down that he is wrong for Rory? Hard to say. But she doesn’t have to love Logan, Rory does. And she’s always supported her daughter. “You could never disappoint me. Ever. Ever. Ever,” she told Rory when she didn’t get the fellowship. So you know she’ll say yes.

Maybe it was too much to process. After all, she’d gone out the night before for a fun night of karaoke and ended up serenading Luke. It started off as a cheesy tribute to Rory: “Here’s another embarrassing moment for your diary, kid! Happy Graduation!” Then out came a shaky but sweet version of “I Will Always Love You.” (A little more Dolly than Whitney, but impressive nonetheless!) But just as she started to sing about “bittersweet memories, that’s all I’ll take with me,” Luke walked in. And suddenly, everyone at KC’s Bar knew it wasn’t about Rory anymore. As Lorelai warbled her way through the goodbye song about “joy and happiness,” Luke actually got choked up and teary-eyed. His rare display of emotion probably got Lorelai through that song. In the end he nodded and smiled. And I was wiping back tears.

Good thing this ep wasn’t entirely emotional. We finally got to see Lane with the twins, and she’s totally rocking motherhood. She’s so cool, she’s willing to stay home and give Zack the chance to tour for two months with Vapor Rub. (Hilarious moniker, and apparently more famous than Hep Alien if they’re playing Roseland and the Bowery Ballroom.) And Paris wouldn’t be Paris if she didn’t throw a party for her future Harvard Med School classmates just to size up the competition.

Rory’s future seems shaky, as the rejection letters pour in and she’s turned down by the newspaper she’d just dissed. Apparently the Pro Jo is looking pretty good these days. At least she admitted that she was cocky about landing the fellowship, figuring she was “so in.” When a meltdown ensued, mom came to her rescue with the pep talk (“Every setback is a setup for future accomplishments”), junk food (the diner, natch) and, of course, shopping. How can you not love this woman? I bet Luke is asking himself the same exact thing.

Oh I love me some Gilmore Girls!! I feel like they were back in top form tonight - so awesome. And I know there are some Logan haters out there, but you have to give the boy props for doing what he did, asking Lorelai. And you know he's been planning it, as he told Rory on the phone, a day or two previously, not to worry about not getting the Times internship & that things would be getting better. Of course, we all knew he was going to be asking for Lorelai's permission tonight, thanks to the promo from last week (ugh), but I was really excited to see it anyway. Only thing that worries me now is that Rory's gonna say no...

It was so nice to watch a GG episode again with tears in my eyes. I'm willing to write off the first half of the season if they would just hurry up and get Luke/Loralei back together. That's the one thing I never understood on shows like that. Why split up the main characters when they are obviously so good together? I mean...Ross and Rachel are a good comparison. But I dont' know...I'm excited to see Chris back next week. I know that sounds crazy but you know, he is Rory's father and Lor's lifelong friend. They need to be friends for it to feel right. He's just the guy that's going to appear whenever convenient anyway. He knows who Lor really loves. I'm just ready for the next season, whether it be long or short. I would much rather go into GG with the knowledge that the season would be over; I don't like the suprise factor for right now. I don't want next Tuesday to be goodbye, I only want it to be see you later.

Loved the episode. I actually didn't think I was going to like it, I always think songs are sappy, but it was great. The next two weeks are going to be amazing. And the two things that really got complained about last week were fixed, both Emily and Richard were back along with Lane and the twins. Oh, and I noticed Lulu in the bar while Kirk was singing. It seems like so long since she's been around.

I have loved the last two episodes of GG. I feel like the writers have finally gotten back to the show that I loved for so long (not including the last 1 1/2 seasons!).

I loved that Luke had his blue cap back on and my heart was beating so fast during Lorelai's song because I was so happy that she and Luke are finally, finally, finally back on the road to reconciiation - they should never have split up!

I have a question, though. What's with the minivan-like vehicle that Lorelai was driving when she pulled up to her house? Did I miss something? The last thing I remember about her vehicle was that Luke got her an engine, so her old one could be repaired. Did they mention somewhere that she's driving a loaner until it gets fixed?

I am totally a Logan fan; I would so like for he and Rory to get engaged because I really think they balance each other out, but I don't think they're going to end up together. Yes, she needs to experience the world, but why can't they do it together?

I can't wait until next Tuesday and I'm rooting for one more season, so that we can FINALLY get the episodes with L/L that we should have gotten a year and a half ago!

One other thought as I was rewatching the last half of the episode: since Zach said he found Luke's hat behind the diswasher, does this mean that Luke didn't have any significant meaning behind the blue hat? Did he only put it on because he couldn't find the ill-fitting black one? Or did he not look very hard for it because he was ready to once again wear the hat that Lorelai gave him? Or a third option would be that he deliberately "lost" it, so that he would have an excuse if someone asked him why he was wearing the hat again.

Am I overthinking things maybe a little?

I think Luke deliberately lost the black hat, then used that for the reason he was wearing the blue one again.

Also, the car had a dragonfly symbol on one of the windows I think I recall seeing. She is probably just driving the company car till the Jeep is fixed.

I feel like tonight the Gilmore Girls we knew kind of returned... I think the writers are finally in a good place with the story and its letting the characters be who they've always been instead of forcing something that didn't feel right.
If the next two episodes are as good as the last two, I will be really really heartbroken if the show doesn't come back, even if it is a short season.
this was a great episode. i loved every part of it aside from the fact that luke and april are now all of a sudden saying 'i love you' so easily and more so, if luke calls april 'sweetie' again i'm gonna spaz.
luke never says stuff like that, and its just very anti-luke...
if i had to pick one thing about this episode i didnt like it would have to be that Luke wasn't written as well as i would've liked.
i love Rory and Logan together, but i too think that its not a forever thing. i'm incredibly stoked for the next two weeks.

My heart is aflutter. GG is BACK. There wasn't one false note in this episode. Rory's too young to get married; but I think the separation will give them time to decide if they really want a future together. And I just dont imagine it will be in SF. I'm guessing there will be a relationship mending between Logand and Dad, and opportunities closer to home. I just can't see Rory and Lorelie being split up...now and forever. They are the GG and will be even when they are old and gray. (I'm lucky enough to have this kind of relationship with my now married daughter and mother of two so I know). Bring on the next season!

I am glad Dave wrote this ep. It was one of his good ones. Lately every time I watch this show I feel sad after. It's like Lorelai crooned in her song, "bittersweet memories." It is so glaringly obvious they should be together and should have never split up, especially they way they split. I think that is partly why I feel sad, they have such baggage now. Lorelai cheated and they don't even really address that. And if they end this show without Luke and Lorelai getting hitched so help me I am going to throw a hissy fit the likes of which the world has never seen. They aren't getting younger so it just is heartbreaking to watch this bittersweet relationship. Cursed Christopher! When I saw him in next week's promo, I wanted to barf. I don't want to be reminded of his homewrecking face. And how is Luke supposed to see them together now? L/L should get married and go on the boat trip for a honeymoon. And Chris should be killed off.: ) I am way too emotionally invested in this show.
Rory and Lorelai in the diner was great to see again! If the show returns, Rory needs to be there also, let's face it. The show wouldn't be the same without Luke,Lorelai or Rory...and maybe Kirk.Ha. Wow, this blog is long but I love, love this show. Also Logan says all the right things but I just don't feel him for Rory. Too bad Jess can't return. He will always be my favorite. The song was great-Graham and Patterson really know how to ignite the screen! Ok I am done now.

Wow. I loved the karaoke scene. Lorelai switching from singing to Rory to singing to Luke was just excellent acting. Pure goofiness to embarassment to the hell with it, yeah i'm singing to you, Luke. And a Luke that was completely calm, relaxed, enjoying the moment and obviously touched by it all. And when others realized something had changed in the room. i loved it!

On a bit of a side note. It's amazing how different Whitney's version and Dolly's (Lorelai's) are. Really 2 different songs.

Seriously....did Lauren Graham sound good? Does she have a voice?
Or was this just goofing around singing?
I haven't seen the ep yet.

Gilliegirl - what do you mean they didn't address her infidelity? Don't you remember the last episode - the maze episode where she bumped into Luke while lost in the maze and she apologized profusely for going to Christopher's and for doing what she did? And then Luke reciprocated by admitting that he alienated her by keeping April a secret and then was using April as a way to avoid commitment?

In any case, one of the best episodes ever. I loved that Lorelai finally told Rory when she was bumming out over the fellowship - "You know kid you've had it easy. whatever you wanted you got...it's time to get some perspective" (not verbatim but still awesome and I'm sure we all wanted to say that to Rory). And Lorelai singing - oh gosh best acting for both her and Luke - the look in her eyes as she sang, and Luke realizing it was about them. a rare but beautiful moment and everyone knew it.

Can't wait for the season (or series?!) finale!!

Greaet summary, Robin. And I did love this episode...... Don't know what I'll do if we don't have a Season 8!

Robin, I'm wondering if the look on Lorelai's face was because of Rory possibly moving across the country? Logan told her the job offer was in San Francisco. And while there would certainly be plenty of opportunities for her there - it would take her a long way away - not just a short train or car ride - from her family.

That's what I thought when I saw the look.
