January 21, 2007: Come Play Wiz Me

After last week's laugh-filled hour, tonight was a bit of a letdown as far as the humor level goes. This doesn't mean I didn't like this episode — I just enjoyed it less, and I am in agreement with those of you who are starting to get a bit tired of the Alma story line. When, oh, when will we get to see Monique in flashbacks again? At least we know that those teeth are actually Monique's, as expected, and we found out what Alma was injecting herself with — hormones, so she'd get pregnant more easily. Speaking of which, how about Alma giving Orson both sleeping pills and Viagra so that she could rape him while he was passed out? I do give the writers (Valerie Ahern and Christian McLaughlin) credit for making references to Viagra without actually mentioning it, like Alma saying she gave Orson something "to keep the part of you I need nice and perky." That was pretty creepy when Gloria mentioned how much she wanted a grandchild while Alma got ready for her night with Orson by revealing the sexy nightgown she was wearing. The creep-fest got much less creepier when Gloria left the room to give them privacy. Contrary to what was suggested in last week's previews, Bree did not fall for the Orson-in-bed-with-Alma scenario. Bree figured something was up. When she couldn't get Orson out of bed and then saw the liquor on the table across the room, Bree put two and two together, checked under the covers and saw that something was indeed up: "You raped my husband!" Good thing Bree didn't bring her gun with her — she had to get her frustrations out by simply knocking Alma out, followed by a quick call to Andrew: "Come over right away... and bring the wheelbarrow!"

So, Ian's comatose wife Jane is now dead. What excellent timing for Susan to find out from Jane's best friend Erica (Amy Aquino) that Jane was having an affair with a dude named Ted. Certainly made Susan feel way less guilty about dating Ian, and no wonder why Ian gets so jealous of Mike. It looked as though Susan really meant it when she told Mike that she couldn't see him anymore, even now that he's out of prison thanks to Zach (I'll get to Zach and his mop-top later). You can tell Mike really loves Susan now, so something tells me he's not going to stop those feelings. And with Mike out of prison, will Edie want him back? Maybe that's why I didn't enjoy tonight as much as last week — there was no Edie!

It did not surprise me that Lynette quit her job to become Tom's restaurant manager. All it took was her son Parker's look of utter disappointment after he heard Lynette tell her boss Ed she'd be back to work on Monday. She and Tom do make a great team, so we'll just have to see if the Scavo Pizzeria is a success. Of course, Lynette has no problem that she has to "sleep with the boss." Earlier, I liked that Mrs. McCluskey encouraged Kayla to apologize to Lynette for not going to the street fair, but demon-spawn Kayla just had to spill the beans to Ed about where Lynette was.

OK, can we talk about Zach's hair again? It seems as if it got even longer than it was last week. Every scene Cody Kasch was in, I couldn't really concentrate on what was going on plot-wise, because I was so distracted by his Jaclyn Smith-like hair. And what kills me even more is that no one on the show is calling him on it! Even when Zach visited Paul in prison, Paul complimented him on his looks (?!) and said: "Your mother would be proud." Yeah, right. Luckily, Gabrielle is not attracted to Zach. Even with all his money, she still didn't want to give him a real kiss goodnight. Loved Gaby's line after Zach tried to turn the kiss into something bigger: "Kiss my lips, not my esophagus!" You'd think he'd get the hint, but it looks like Zach's totally obsessed, especially after he indirectly referred to Gaby as his "future wife" to Paul. (Uh-oh... I'm picturing him saying, "I won't be ignored, Gaby!") I was hoping Zach would abide by Paul's request for money to hire someone to track down Felicia — now there's someone I miss.

Heads up for next Sunday — ABC is airing a repeat. Those carefully-worded coming attractions were actually for three weeks from now. The announcer said: "Coming up on Desperate Housewives," rather than "Next week on..." But here's the thing: The SAG Awards are on next Sunday (on both TNT and TBS at the same time), and the DH cast is deservedly up for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series. And Felicity Huffman is up for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series. So, for that reason and that reason alone, I'm glad it's a repeat. The following Sunday, Feb. 4 is the Super Bowl, so see you in 3 weeks — Sunday, Feb. 11.

Wow...I can't believe I'm first. I was thinking Zach's hair looked more like Darryl Hall (Hall & Oates) than Jaclyn Smith. Either way...its pretty bad!

I'm not getting tired of the Alma/Orson storyline at all. Last season, everyone seemed to be complaining about the lack of a good mystery on Wisteria Lane, like the one that carried the first season (i.e., why did Mary Alice kill herself, etc.). Last season was below par, I'll admit, because the Applewhites were major duds. But now that we've got a juicy mystery this season (who killed Monique) you're getting cranky already?
I think it's getting MORE interesting each week, not less.

What is it about "Desperate Housewives" that always seems to have even its biggest fans--including whoever wrote this week's blog-- moaning and whining about the most inconsequential things?

The scene with Orson and Alma in bed was stolen from Rescue Me. They did the same thing last summer.

I thought the appearance of Ted was not to make Susan not feel less guilty, but to understand why Ian was so jealous of Mike -- He's been cheated on and hurt badly before, and once Susan learned that, she understood why Ian didn't want her to continue a friendship with Mike. Just the way I interpreted it though...

AzraelK, I totally agree with you! As soon as that scene was over, I said to my husband that now we understand why Ian gets downright demanding and controlling when it comes to Susan not seeing Mike. Each time he's gone off on her about Mike, I've wondered where that attitude comes from and now we know.

My question at the end of the episode was, now that Mike is out of jail thanks to Zach, why doesn't Susan just dump Ian to be with Mike?! She found another way, which Ian challenged her to do. And Mike is SO much sexier than Ian! IMHO

OK...this was not the funnest episode, but it did begin to start some other story threads, like Mike out on bail, the Alma trying to be pregnant, and perhaps another Andrew storyline with his knowledge of the wheelbarrow. I miss Edie also. However I might have liked this episode as an advancement or start up (thought the Zak thing is kind of out there with Gaby and the hair is awful!!) I thought the scene with Susan and the "our relationship was based on gossip anyway" friend was really lame. She went because her parents were there, or not there why? And the hold the phone up, come on, when will Ian be revealed as a creep, you just know it will, as Mike and Susan are going to be together again, right? And, finally, I agree, it will be three weeks, no one fights the awards shows and only shows which premier AFTER the Super Bowl are on that night !! (GO BEARS)

Well I guessed right. It was hormone injections and I figured she would have to drug Orson to accomplish her plan. I didn't see his mother helping her out though. That was creepy but I said the line at the same time as her. It's all coming together now. Now, I'm thinking that mama killed Monique. The church frowns on mistresses. And maybe even Monique was preggers (???hmmm) and that's why she killed her. She wants a grandchild but only with the proper wife. And maybe that's why Alma and mama are so tight. They know about each other's dirty secrets.

Yeah, I think Mike is getting his feelings back for Susan and I think deep down Susan still loves him. Ian's jealousy will get between them and send her straight back to Mike.

Gabby should make a deal with Zach. Cut the MOP and she'll give him a real kiss. Anyone know if that's his real hair? HE should fire his personal stylist for not letting him know how ridiculous it looks.

To second the person before me, Alma raping Orson was completely shades of Sheila and Tommy on Rescue Me. As soon as he said he felt dizzy, I could tell what was coming. I also agree that there is something fishy going on with Ian. His "I have to tell Jane something" seems like a confession in the making. I just hope it's not a cliche of Mike having to come to Susan's rescue from Ian. Also, please more Edie and Andrew! They definetly add the spice to the show.

I wonder how long it'll be before Tom and Lynette have to pull their kids out of private school and sell their huge house on Wisteria Lane? How is Tom going to keep the restaurant afloat in its first year and pay Lynette a salary anywhere close to what she was making before? I know they referenced "money being tight", but that's an understatement. Most restaurants lose money their first couple of years. Should be interesting to see how that's addressed. Maybe Zack Young can finance the whole operation. ;)

All I can say is I HATE Zach's hair, it is so awful and it is all I can look at when he is in a scene. He looks like a little girl. I can't believe it isn't a joke, it is just so bad!

Zach's hair has to go. It is distracting. When he's onscreen I'm staring at it instead of listening to the dialogue.

Why didn't Bree call the police when she had Alma and Orson out cold? She had the drugs in hand, the booze was right there, it would have been easy to have it tested. Anyway...

They didn't do a good job of hiding Marcia Cross' pregnancy last night. The previews showed us how they're planning on filming her scenes in bed for the foreseeable future, though.

I agree with those who believe that Susan's understanding was the point of Ted's introduction.

Yeah, I was incredibly creeped out when Alma took off her robe while Orson's mother was still in the room. Those two make the most shameless, appalling team. It's a wonder Orson hasn't gone completely off the deep end with those two women in his life (not that he's the sanest guy ever).
And I agree with mcyoung12 - we need more Andrew and Edie. They always get the best lines!
