« Degrassi: The Next Generation

Episode Recap: Free Fallin' (Part 2)

First off, I know this blog is a few days late and for that, I apologize. What can I say? I love this country so much that my Independence Day festivities carried over into the weekend and I couldn't catch up with my shows until today. Plus, the MTV premiere of My Super Sweet 16 Movie was on, featuring Degrassi's very own Manny Santos (Cassie Steele) in a supporting role. But I'm caught up now and ready to talk Degrassi. Now on to this week's ep.

I don't know what happened between this week and last... but for some reason I found myself completely disinterested in Paige's story line. Last week I sympathized with her and her struggle to stay afloat at Banting, but this week she just struck me as annoying and needy. Granted, the girl is on the verge of completely flunking out of college, but that's what happens when you try to pass off an Internet essay as your own. Word of advice, Paige: When it's getting down to crunch time and you find yourself in a bind, try hitting the library and a Starbucks Double-Shot before heading straight to Google. An "incomplete" is way better than a big fat zero (and possible plagiarism charges to boot). It was around this part of the episode that I began to lose interest. It seemed like she had one of her little freak-outs every time things didn't go her way, and rather than confide in her friends during her time of need, she put on a happy face, came up with a cover story and sang the night away. Oh Paige! You mean you can't just transfer schools mid-semester without a transcript or any kind of legitimate excuse? But you were head cheerleader at Degrassi... that's gotta count for something!

Although I'm not feeling the Paige story so much, I'm absolutely loving the budding romance between Darcy and Peter. Anyone else catch how they slipped in a bit of Canadian slang with the line: "You're gonna get us both in sugar!" Maybe I'm just getting old but I've never heard any American high-schoolers speak like that. That one had me practically rolling on the floor. Anyhow, I'm loving that Darcy has completely written off all of Peter's wrongdoings after seeing how his feuding parents treat him and each other. Who cares that he swapped risqué photos of you with an Internet perv? His parents are divorced! I know the Bible teaches to forgive and forget, but seriously Darcy, that dude's issues go way beyond simply being the product of a broken home.

Overall I was glad that Alex finally confronted Paige so we could move past this Banting thing. I'm also very happy that they are taking their time in developing the Darcy/Peter relationship because there's a lot of fun to be had with this one. So that concludes another week of drama on Degrassi. I can't wait for next week when we'll finally get to see what the other Degrassi kids are up to. Judging by the previews, it seems mating season at Degrassi is in full swing.

LOL--good review, but I had exactly the opposite reaction! I was mainly interested in Paige's (literal) flame-out, and I'm curious to see what consequences follow. And hurray for Alex for being a true friend and letting Mama Paige know what was up. Paige has a long way to go to recover from this.

On the other hand, I find Peter and Darcy the two most annoying characters on the show. He's an exploitative loser (first with the Manny video and then with Darcy's website). She's a self-righteous hypocrite who's happy to judge the world. And after spending many weeks in Canada (as a tourist, admittedly), I think Darcy saying "you'll get us in sugar" is just her way of avoiding another word that begins with the "sh" sound. Not sure it's particularly Canadian--more of a euphemism. Canadians--feel free to correct me! :)

In any case, I'm enjoying having Degrassi back and look forward to many more of your reviews!

Let me defend my country for a minute... I have never heard a Canadian teen say "You'll get us in sugar". I think they were just demonstrating how prissy Darcy is. I work with teens and trust me they have much more colourful language.

Didn't mean to offend our neighbors to the North. That line just stuck out to me cause I had never heard someone replace sh** with sugar. I thought perhaps it had Canadian roots though it makes a whole lot more sense for it to be Darcy's little work around for using the naughty words. Needless to say, Canadian origins or not, it still had me cracking up. I'm a bit juvenile like that. Anyhow, I'm glad people are enjoying my little write-ups. Thanks for reading! Btw, I totally agree with your points about Darcy and Peter, AlisonRose, but that's what I find so entertaining about it. You know Darcy is gonna have another slip-up and there's no way in Hades that Peter is even close to changing his tune. I really can't wait!

I agree...the Paige storyline was a little bit too melodramatic. She made thanksgiving dinner, burned down her dorm room, yelled at Alex, plaigarized a paper, dropped out of Banting, attempted to transfer to another university, and had about 6 panic attacks...all within one one weekend? Jeez...I'm surprised she had enough time to sing karaoke with her friends.

I'm ready for a break from the college kids for awhile, but from the previews it looks like there will be a lot of Paige this season.

It's about time for a Jimmy episode...
