Horatio Caine: When's the Epiphany?

The helmet's on. The goggles are in place. The kevlar is fastened. The body pads are secure. Bring on the abuse. Just remember. If you're not nice, we'll take all our marbles and go home.

David Caruso, it's time for your epiphany. You're now settled (more or less) into the second half of your life; you have beautiful children as your posterity, you are financially comfortable, and you have a vocation you enjoy. You have tasted success; you've tasted failure, each in huge gulps. You've spent a considerable time suspended in the midstream of your profession, hovering between success and failure.

With the second chance of success in CSI Miami, we expected you to come on the scene like a lion, swallowing everything in your path, a smidge subdued but still ferocious. The passion and the intensity that garnered raves and fans in earlier efforts was still apparent. You brought an instant integrity and a certain charm to the character of Horatio Caine. With the necessary restraints of television, and under the watchful eye of Les Moonves, you created a persona recognized around the world. You had a winner. CBS and Jerry, Anthony, Ann, et al, had a winner.

Gradually, yet more sudden than first realized, the passionate and intense Horatio Caine took on elements far removed from the attributes we all demanded of our Miami lieutenant. For nearly two seasons we suffered through some abominable storylines and dull characterizations from your Horatio. We were led to believe a return of our "old Horatio" was in the offing for Season 6, with plots designed to bring out the best. Unfortunately, while there were scenes and a few stellar moments, the season progressed at an uncomfortable gait, with a previously cloaked Horatio revealed as a vengeance seeker. This person was definitely NOT appreciated by long standing fans and viewers.

The only hint we've had to date regarding Season 7 is from Corey (Miller) who said "Horatio's going to go darker". Is that even possible? We referred to your character not long ago as "Dexter Caine". Perhaps we weren't so far off. Horatio Caine-a one-man vigilante. Whose lightning-bolt idea is this? CBS (Les Moonves), in pursuit of that damnable demo? Ann Donahue, bowing to the pressures at the top? David Caruso - prostituting yourself and your character in pursuit of a superhero? Bad choices, on all counts. With the 'darker' image, Horatio Caine will have even less chance to display that passion. Yet another year of posturing and grimacing could well have us all switching to Nashville Star.............UGH.

Epiphany time, David Caruso. We would like to believe a seething cauldron of passion and intensity still exists within. We would like to see it onscreen, small or large. We'd like to see you shake off the easy chair portrayal, throw off that comfort level and resurrect the Horatio Caine of yore before he's obliterated in a torrent of mediocrity.

Many good points in this. Can we hope David and the show staff are reading it.

This is long overdue. Will Season 7 be any improvement? None that I can see, if the "Horatio goes darker" comes to be. That's too bad. They (tptb) aren't reading their viewers very well. To proceed as planned is a slippery slope to cancellation.

I don't think I'm looking forward to the new season. It's tiring to be disappointed every year. They make promises, feed us a nibble or two, then back to the same ol', same ol'.

CSI just got new writers. CSI Miami needs them even more so.

Without a wake-up call, new writers have their hands tied. THEY ALL NEED AN EPIPHANY!

I think that I could even handle the darker part if it involved passion and intensity. Caruso has always tended to bring intensity to his roles so I know it's out there somewhere. It's the Sunglasses of Justice, they have corrupted him!

I am not convinced that a "darker" Horatio of vengeance will maintain the female fans, nor the maturer demographic. Surely they can't be aiming at young males only. A vengeance-seeking hero is old hat, not? Surely, the combination of mystery, color, the science, the intensity and effectiveness of H and co as a PACKAGE is the attraction of the show that is embraced by the broader demographic.

"Surely, the combination of mystery, color, the science, the intensity and effectiveness of H and co as a PACKAGE is the attraction of the show that is embraced by the broader demographic."

That's interesting because that's why I was attracted to the show in the first place. Horatio has changed since then, hasn't he?

He's been through a lot since then too. I wonder what they are doing with the Horatio character, or if they're still following that '9 year plan for Horatio' that was spoken of some while ago? If they are, this 'change' in Horatio is part of that story or plan.

Hopefully, they will bring him out of it, I really don't think it's going to attact younger people either.

I like that certian intensity and passion that David has as well. When it's there, it's there and when it's not there, it's missed.

Not to say that David is doing a bad job at being Horatio. I don't think he's ever done a 'bad' job at any of his roles. If this 'change' is part of the plan, he's playing Horatio EXACTLY as he is supposed to be at this point in the 'plan.'

But if the 'plan' was scratched and given up on, then I don't know. I like the Horatio we saw in the first couple of seasons better if that's the case.

But, I guess it's just the 'wait and see' game.

If I didn't make any sense, I'm sorry. :8}
