September 12, 2006: They Feel Like Dancing

Loved the new bigger and better set. The chandeliers and balcony seats add a kind of theater glamour to the show. Tom Bergeron was back in top form with his snappy comments, proving he's one of the best reality-show hosts out there. And the judges were back to bickering amongst themselves in no time. As for the new crop of stars, some lived up to expected awkwardness, while some surprised.

Let's start with the top of the pack: Mario Lopez. Sure, I expected A.C. Slater could dance well; after all, he had some pretty killer moves back at those Bayside High dances. But I never expected his dancing to be that good: those hips, those feet, those dimples. Did I mention his dancing was really good? He has the lean body of a dancer, and could almost pass for one of the professionals. And right on his heels in the competition was Emmitt Smith. After fellow football great Jerry Rice made it to runner-up in the competition last year, it should be no surprise that football players can dance. But Emmitt's natural ease on the dance floor was mighty impressive. And his hip action was terrific. And while he wasn't exactly in Mario and Emmitt's league, Joey Lawrence gave an energized performance and showed he has some good moves. I'm still getting used to his new look, and I was a little worried that his new Rambo-style build would make him top-heavy and therefore not light on his feet, but he proved me wrong.

Also very good: Vivica A. Fox. There was a lot of talk about how she was the oldest female competitor, but I think she showed everyone that age doesn't matter. She was sexy and confident and bested her younger female competition. Not that they didn't put up a fight: Willa Ford also gave a seductive performance, and young Monique Coleman was very graceful. Shanna Moakler's attempt at the fox-trot was so-so, but she does win hands down for costume with the most distracting fringe. As for Sara Evans, she gave the quietest performance of the night. There were moments of grace in it, but her nervousness seemed to overtake her most of the time.

And now onto the disappointment of the evening: Harry Hamlin. I really expected more from Mr. L.A. Law, as did the judges. He's got a great build for dancing, and he had the benefit of watching his wife, Lisa Rinna, go through this experience last season. And yet, he was extremely stiff and ill at ease.

Last but not least, there were the class clowns: Tucker Carlson and Jerry Springer. It's hard to call what Tucker did "dancing," since he sat on a chair for most of the number. Then he sort of walked. But he gets points for having a good time out there. The man didn't stop smiling. Oh, and he also gets points for ditching the bow tie during the performance. And Jerry... was not as bad as Tucker. He actually moved on the dance floor. As Bruno Tonioli said, it looks like Jerry's trying to be this season's George Hamilton (only a less debonair version), and relying on that humor angle could carry him for a few weeks. Plus, it's sweet that he's learning to dance for his daughter's wedding.

If there's any justice, Tucker will be the first one going home. But, just as people like to see bad singers stick around for a while on American Idol, I think they also enjoy seeing bad dancers embarrass themselves. So I think Tucker might stay, with Sara perhaps being the first one sent home.

I would have to agree with you, Tucker Carlson just sat there and let his partner do the work. Harry Hamlin may have been stiff, but at least he attempted to dance. As much as I wasn't impressed by Jerry Springer's dancing, I'd like him to stay for a little while so he can learn some moves for his daughter's wedding. I'm sentimental, I can't help it.

Mario Lopez rocked the dance floor tonight. Like you, I thought he would bring moves since we all saw them in his Slater days, but I didn't expect quite what he brought to the competition tonight. I looked forward to seeing Joey Lawrence again. I was not disappointed with his dancing, he shows potential and I want to see him stick around to show it off! I will be the first to admit I wasn't expecting much from Emmitt Smith, but was really surprised to find myself cheering out loud for him and teddy bear moves!

As for the ladies, I think Vivica A. Fox and Monique Coleman are the top 2 female dancers. They have style and grace and show it off with ease. Shanna Moakler is okay, but she's not the best. I wonder if she minds that all people talk about is the personal stuff going on in her life. Like she needs to be reminded. Though Sara Evans was nervous, I thought she wasn't as bad as her score made her out to be. I enjoyed Willa Ford's performance and thinks she could rank in the top of the competition too.

My final verdict: Tucker goes home.

this is the first season i watched dancing with stars. 2 of the main reasons why i wanted to watch this season was jerry springer and tucker carlson. so i could get my laugh on. and after tonights show....i defianlty did. espically with tucker. all he did was sitting in a chair. from the clips that i seen from last season tucker did a little better than master p.

anyway i thought the 2 best performances were mario and emmitt. i had a feeling that mario could dance....but i didnt know he couldnt move like that. dimples sure did look good in his tight pants. and as for emmitt i defianlty didnt know he could move like that. i think the final 2 will be emmitt and mario.

now back to jerry. win did he become a talk show icon?? i think a talk show nuisance, but not a talk show icon. and what was that around his waist? it looked really weird. and as for his dancing....as much as i hate to say this but he did pretty good. not the best of the night but good.

one more thing......im i the only one who hasnt heard of willa ford??

but i hate to say this but tucker is going home.

Willa, "The Bad Girl of Pop"?

Did she give herself that title, the way Michael Jackson gave himself the title: "King of Pop"?

Willa had a semi-hit bak in the day and now she tries anything to remain in the spotlight **rolls eyes**.

I didnt really watch last yr but thought I'd give a try this yr. I missed Joey unfortuntely..saw the clip of his dance...not bad not bad..but whats up w. the hair (or lack thereof). Also didnt see Tucker, Willa,Monique, Sara or Emmett.

I knew Mario had some moves but helloooo babbyyyyy..I aint kno he had it like that!! He's my fav. And go head Vivica w/ yo bad self..she's my fav woman.

Springer is a talk show icon cuz there was never a show like his...and he had quite a following..still does somewhat. I think he was cute for trying and didn do too bad either. Hamlin..I knew he was gonna be stiff haha!

Willa "used to be Nick Carter's girl toy" Ford... bahahahahaha... another one so-called-hit wonder. Doesn't matter...

Mario, Emmitt and Joe had me mesmerized. And the GUNS on Joe! Whoa!

This show is always such a hot topic, so I decided to flip to it during Big Brother and Rock Star commericals... and I wasn't impressed. These stars aren't popular or big enough for me to really care, and the judges are just awful. I will continue to flip to it on commericals, but I could never sit and watch the whole two hours.

I did catch Tucker, yes, he didn't do much, but he looked like he was having a great time, and that's what's important. Also, when the host was asking Mario backstage where he learned his moved from, I wanted him so bad to mention Saved by the Bell! He's really a gorgeous man, huh? I guess I started watching Nip/Tuck at the right time, since he will be a guest star in next week's episode.
And Willa Ford? She sang I Wanna Be Bad, yes, it is on my ipod, but that was it. I don't believe she even had a mediocre followup song or album, and the only time I ever see her is in trashy men's magazines. I must say, though, that she has a very beautiful face.

"DWTS" has no "Bottom Three" so we won't know who received the lowest totals. (The results are revealed in no particular order which sometimes ruins the drama.)

Anyway, the Bottom Three, were there such a thing, should be Tucker, Sara, and Jerry. I'd be happy with either Sara or Tucker going -- Tucker just can't dance, but Sara was more of a disappointment considering she's a professional entertainer.

So glad this show is back! And glad to see some of the RS:SN posters are over here, too - I missed Joey and Mario's performances because I was watching Rockstar ... but from what I saw during the re-cap at the end of the show, Joey should have scored higher?

My husband and I think Emmitt is lighter on his feet than Jerry Rice was at the beginning last year because Smith is a running back and has to be able to dodge linemen who want to kill him while wide receivers run flat out and catch ... just a theory.

My advice to everyone but Mario, Vivica & Emmitt... RELAX! Most everyone seemed very stiff, but I think that was nerves on a first show & most should loosen up in the next couple of weeks. That being said...

I agreed with the judges most of the time tonight. I see they're going to be tougher on the competitors this season, which I think is good, considering last year's voting started soft and had nowhere to go!

And since there are so many contestants now, I'll refrain from individually talking about each for now, but I do have to say, that I think Emmitt last night was better than Jerry Rice's last performance last year. I think that's the difference between a running back and a receiver. And I say that with love, since I'm a 49er fan and hate the Cowboys.

Here's hoping the ladies step up and break out in the next few weeks, and that Tucker goes home tonight... he was awful, not as bad as that ESPN guy last season, at least he really tried, but he was bad. Shame on Bruno though for just being totally mean to Tucker!

Hi Health30 hello from Joy,girl you got to get a tivo or a DVR so you can watch picture in picture. Mario and Emmitte were the best. I thought that Harry Hamlin would have been better, being that his wife had insider info, but I guess he didn't listen. I just loved Jerry Springer atleast he moved,T/Carlson needs to go,go,go home. All white guys should take offense that he is represent'en them in the worse way.

Let's give Harry Hamlin a break. There's a huge difference between watching his wife dance and actually learning to do it himself. He'll get there if he's given a chance. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say Mario Lopez is going to win. I was just blown away by his dancing. Awesome work, Mario.
