October 24, 2006: Double Dancing, Double Standard
Monique Coleman has been all about girl power and “representing the women” these past two weeks, as she remains the last female star standing in this competition. Though she feels the female stars have been judged more harshly than the male stars this season, the more obvious double standard that the judges have been applying isn’t so much a male vs female thing as a Jerry vs non-Jerry thing. Their comments to Jerry Springer go something like this (and I’m paraphrasing): “Jerry, great job for just getting out there and trying. And bonus points for moving around a bit.” Their comments to everyone else: “Mario, good job and all, but be careful with the floppy arms.... Joey, well done, but watch the somewhat sloppy turns.” The judges admit that Jerry’s not doing the same level of dancing as the rest of the contestants, but then they go and give him all eights for his fox-trot, which he sort of walked through. Yes, Jerry is older than his competitors and he did appear to take his dancing more seriously this week. But really, he peaked a few weeks ago with his heartfelt waltz and then his joyous samba. As much fun as he’s been, it’s time for him to go so that there can be a truly competitive final four.
Speaking of competitive, Emmitt Smith really stepped up his game this week. He’s never given a bad performance, and he’s done some great dances, but this week he earned his first 10s with two wonderful performances. While the waltz can sometimes be a boring dance, Emmitt’s execution of it was anything but. So light on his feet, he glided across the dance floor. It was my favorite performance of the night, but his mambo was also impressive. I think he’s going to pull ahead of Joey Lawrence and we’re going to see Emmitt and Mario Lopez in the finals. That makes it sound like Mario is a given to make the finals, and of course it’s not safe to assume anything in a competition like this. But barring a major dancing mishap on Mario’s part or a sudden fan backlash against A.C. Slater, he most likely will make it to the final round. His dancing last night was smooth and entertaining as always – how much fun was that in-sync jive? And how much fun would it be to see Mario and Emmitt go head-to-head at the end? Both are so light on their feet, both give such lively performances.... It would be a good matchup.
But I’m getting ahead of myself. The finals are still a few weeks away, and Joey and Monique are still in contention. Monique did some solid work, but she did run into a bit of bad luck this week, none for which she is to blame. First she got her foot caught in her dress, but she kept dancing and didn’t let it affect her quickstep. Then she had the misfortune of having to dance the paso doble to an ‘80s song (the only poor song selection of the night — the producers are getting better with this overall), and at the end of the dance Louis appeared to just drop her on the ground. Ow! And despite opening an umbrella indoors, good luck seemed to rain on Joey as he finally improved his dancing after a few weeks of going downhill. His Gene Kelly tribute was cute and well done, and with his mambo he was noticeably looser and really seemed to be enjoying himself.
Perhaps Joey will get a chance to improve some more. He started climbing out of the bottom two last night after tallying last week’s votes with this week's judges’ votes. But this week’s audience vote is still a wild card. Jerry rightfully heads into that vote with the lowest score of 64, but his fans may save him again.

I literally jumped up and cheered for both Emmitt and Joey tonight. Though Emmitt has continually brought down the house when he dances, he never falters in my eyes. Joey has gone downhill, but he's coming back and he's proving to be better than ever! I've been one of the ones voting to keep him in the competition. Mario is a great dancer, and as much as I don't want to admit, he seems a shoo-in for the final round, but nothing is ever that simple with this show.
Jerry and Kym really should go home this week, it would be the most logical thing to happen in this competition. While Monique was as delightful as ever, she should accompany Jerry in the final two. Though I really don't want to see her leave yet either.

I hated the music Monique danced to for that second dance. Also thought the outfit she was wearing looked horrible on her.

Ditto on Monique's bad music and bad outfit.
I'm a big #1 Emmitt fan. Just love how he loves what he's doing. He looks right at Cheryl like they're the only ones in the room. It's always fun, romantic and some dang good dancing.
As for Joey, well, I've always thought he was a little cutie, but nowadays, with his shaved head, his pumped up arms, and his sleeveless shirts, he looks like one of the Village People. He can dance, but I wish he looked better while doing it, and a little more confidence couldn't hurt.

I know this is shallow, but Joey's appearance has affected my voting on this show. I wonder who told him that "Mr Clean" look was good for him. It's supposed to be about dancing, but when you are distracted by the way the dancer looks it changes things. Emmitt is fantastic and Mario rules.

I agree that Joey is a very handsome man, but I've watched him from a child actor until now and I barely recognized him on this show. His trademark for years was his long curly hair so I just don't get the radical change. Most actors explain their different looks by saying "it's for a movie role" or something, but Joey hasn't done that. He's a great dancer for sure, but I'd love to see that curly hair again.

Monique continues to have problems with her outfits. Her heels have been caught in her dress/feathers at least 2 times. Remember when she wore that yellow 2 piece dress a few weeks back. Her heel caught the bottom and pulled her dress down in the back. Wardrobe should plan her costumes better.

Joey and Mario are both excellent dancers, and they are certainly built for it, but I don't enjoy watching them as much as I do Emmett. Now he just looks like he's enjoying himself and Joey and Mario look as though they are working too hard for it. Personality wise, outside of the judges on stage, viewers who vote may vote not vote just on how swanky the dancing is, especially if Emmett is at least equal to Joey and Mario, but who they perceive to be the one who will really enjoy the win for what it isn't, a stepping stone to a dancing career.

I believe Joey shaved his head for a roll he'd been cast in prior to DWTS and there wasn't time to grow it back in time for the competition.
Someone should tell Monique that a bare midriff isn't a good look for her.
I think Jerry is flabbergasted that he's still around. I also think he's ready to go home. You can see it in his expressions. He truly knows he doesn't belong there anymore.
I also think the scoring was unfair in the second round. Mario was clearly better than Emmitt. Mario had harder moves and more energy, but Emmitt was the one who scored tens. What's up with that? Emmitt did a great job, but his effort wasn't as good as Mario's.

I thought everyone stepped it up last night and did a very good job. I didn't care for Jerry's second dance though, the first one was much better. I really hope he leaves tonight since he really can't dance even though he is good for a laugh, it still isn't fair to keep him around. I hope it really comes down to Joey and Mario. I would really love to know the real reason behind Joey's bald head. Sometimes he looks good with it but other times he doesn't. I like the way he dances but sometimes he does look funny doing certain steps. But I think him and Mario are really good and they both are really hot! I like Emmitt too and if he winds up winning, I wouldn't be too disappointed. I can't believe the show is winding down and is almost over. Can't wait for next season and see which celebrities they get for the show. I think they should have the judges do a dance routine so we can see what they can actually do on the dance floor. I hope everyone keeps up the good work and I hope there are no surprises/disappointment tonight with having the wrong person leave.
Go Joey/Mario!

Love Mario. First time I really liked Emmitt. Monique music was horrible for the pasodoble. And didn't like her dancing. Paso Doble is about passion and energy, she looked like she was mad and fighting... no grace whasoever. Dress horrible. Got to go.
Jerry --I laugh till it hurts, but he should be gone!
Joey's look I like. Shaved head takes him out of the boyish look. Top three for him.
