« CSI: Miami
October 9, 2006: Where's Tyra When You Need Her?
I have to admit that this week’s episode left me cold — dead cold, as Horatio might say. What’s fun about CSI: Miami is that it’s so over-the-top about the Miami money and celebrity culture; unfortunately, male models are not a culture I care about all that much. The whole story line almost seemed more like an excuse to introduce the subplot about Natalia’s abusive ex-husband than a fully formed idea in and of itself. In fact, it felt a little like "America’s Next Top Nip/Tuck: Miami."
In terms of the four episodes that have aired this season, I think this ranks just above the season opener. It’s nice to finally be rid of the Ray Caine action, but it seems that this void will instead be filled by Natalia’s troubles. (On another note, how is it that Natalia has worked in the lab, and yet seems to be completely in the dark regarding how to process crime scenes?) I won’t dismiss the ex-husband plotline just yet, because I’m interested to see how far they’ll take it, but I hope that they start focusing more on the evidence like they used to, and still do on regular CSI. This episode seemed to rely more on motive, which may have been why it didn’t really connect all the way through. It’s unfortunate, because last week’s episode (“Death Pool 100”) gave the impression that the show had found its footing again after that completely out-of-character Brazilian premiere. I certainly hope we get to see more of Horatio and the Hummer as the season progresses, since David Caruso has always been the highlight of the show.
There were some fun moments this week. The idea of killer lip gloss was just far-fetched enough to make up for the lack of a signature Horatio line (the closest we got was, “It seems that in this case there’s a reason they call them proof sheets,” — and that was from Calleigh!), and of course there was the heartwarming scene where Alexx had to have Ryan identify an obstruction for her. These are the instances that remind me why I have so much fun watching this show. While it might not always make a whole lot of sense, it certainly makes you smile.

Can anyone tell me the name of the song they played at the end? I love it, and that's the second time I've heard it on TV without being able to find it credited! Thanks!

Can people who have been watching CSI Miami give Studio 60 a chance? If they do, they would know how much they have missed!
CSI Miami is just SSDD--same shift, different day!!!

Personally I'm getting a little bored with CSI:Miami. Horatio is always so overdramatic, the storylines all seem along the same lines. The original CSI is still the best. Last night I skipped CSI Miami and watched a Tivoed episode of Without a Trace.

I too only watch this show when I have a slot open on TIVO. I also highly recommend Studio 60 - please check it out.
This show would be so much better if it added a touch of humor to it like the original CSI - can you imagine Horatio Caine doing a singalong to a classic rock tune in the morgue like they did on CSI - that would be worth watching.
Leah - you say that David Caruso is your favorite actor on the show - to me he is the worst. Can we just get a smile from someone? Maybe a chuckle?
It is good to see Rob Estes back on TV - too bad he is playing the creepy ex!

Just to clear something up, I didn't mean to imply that Caruso is my favorite actor - simply that the show ostensibly revolves around him as the leader of the CSI's, and that he often adds humor (however inadvertently) to the episodes. To me, it just seems as though each week he is given less and less to do, even when the story revolves around his family.

The song is Imogen Heap's "Hide and Seek" and was played in Smith's pilot episode.
CBS is really getting a lot of mileage out of the song (which I also think is fantastic).

the best part of the episode was picking out all the ex-soap opera stars and what daytime soap they had been in.

why didn't natalia take out a new restraining order on her husband when he showed up the second time? she works for the police dept...he was in jail for abusing her...not a stretch especially if he can have one taken out, even if it was the judge who hates csi...lots of things did not make sense last night...

You gotta admit Horatio is over the top but it's charming. I admit Miami doesn't have the humour of the original CSI which is really quite funny alot of the time with little jokes here and there (especially Greg) but Miami is cool. I just started getting into it. What I want to know though is how the heck Calleigh knew it was cyonide in the lip gloss. Isn't cyonide impossible to smell unless you have the gene to smell it like Hodges on CSI? Does anyone know if Calleigh also has this gene or ability I guess? I just started watching the show so I don't know much about the characters yet.

>>You gotta admit Horatio is over the top but it's charming.<< Actually, no I don't "gotta admit" it's charming at all - Horatio & the emphasis on him & his family are why I don't watch any more. If that soap-opera-ish "postured" acting appeals to you then go ahead & enjoy it, but please don't assume we all like it.

Thank you Cruciatus. I came to this site today for the sole purpose of getting the name of that song. I kept replaying the end of Smith so I could hear it over and over!

First of all, all of you people that keeping saying "Stop watching CSI: Miami and give Studio 60 a chance" need to be quiet. I happen to love Studio 60, but I tape it because I also love CSI: Miami and since that was on first, that is what I watch. Yes, I hope that more people watch Studio 60 because it's really good, but I think the only way people are going to watch it is if it's moved to a different time slot. I love all the CSI shows and Miami is no exception. If you don't like CSI: Miami (or any other show for that matter), then stop watching it, be quiet and stop ruining it for the rest of us. We read these blogs to hear what people did and did not like about the episodes, not to hear you bitch and whine about how you don't watch the show anymore and people should stop watching it and blah blah blah. If we want to stop watching it, we will. Second of all, while it wasn't the best episode, it was still good. I was wondering why Natalia didn't just get a new restraining order too. That didn't make any sense. I really don't like the character though; I feel like she shouldn't be working there because she was the mole last season. I do feel there wasn't enough Horatio this week, but I like when they show more Calleigh because I like her. I'm looking forward to next week, like I always do.

Why does Natalia have to leave the area when her ex shows up? She was there first and working. Doesn't the ex have to remain outside until the CSIs leaves and clears the scene? You don't clean up the evidence before it it gathered.
Besides, if she's at a restaurant and in the middle of dinner does she have to walk out before finishing if he enters the room? If he does enter when does it turn into harrasment? Where's the common sense in the restraining order? It doesn't work for this story line.
