November 27, 2006: Semper Fi
Yes! We got the triumphant return of Rob Estes as Natalia’s ex-husband, and it happened not a moment too soon. That all-too-brief scene was definitely the highlight of last night’s episode. The exchange between Maxine and Natalia after he asked out Maxine was too priceless. “Are you mad?” “Not at you.” Is no friendship sacred? (I guess that if Denise Richards can steal Ritchie Sambora away from Heather Locklear, then there’s no hope for us mere mortals.)
What can I say about the plot? The opening was certainly intriguing. A marine recruiter gets shot at a civilian gun range, but he was dead before he got there. In the end we find out that in fact, Matthew (the guy who shot him) was actually the one that killed him. For a child of two pathologists, I’m a little concerned about his intelligence. His argument for dragging Hicks to the gun range in the first place was so that it would look like an accident. Either way, he still killed him. I’m guessing that this was one of those “Don’t think too hard about it” situations.
Kevin and Patrick Kirby’s story line was certainly depressing. To me, this seemed like the one time this season that CSI: Miami's attempt to be controversial was actually done effectively. These two brothers signed up for the Marine Corps in order to have a better life when they got out of the military, but only one come back alive. Of course, the other is wracked with guilt thinking he killed his brother, when in fact it was their childhood friend who was there as a contractor — a guy who still had the gall to show up at the wake. I especially appreciated that, for once, Alexx found something in a medical exam that others had missed (and without Horatio’s help, no less!). I still wish we could see a little more of Khandi Alexander, but I’ll take what I can get (supplemented by NewsRadio reruns).
For the second time this season, I really appreciated the music selection over the closing montage. What a nice use of Johnny Cash’s “Like a Soldier." Let’s ignore that these guys weren’t “like” soldiers — they were soldiers; it was still a great closer.
Finally, I would like to applaud the return of classic CSI: Miami lines: — “Frank, the war may be staged, but the murder is real.” — “There’s no return address.” “That’s OK, the challenge keeps us frosty. That’s the CSI way.”
There were others, but none that quite reached those sublime heights. At least they left us with something fun until after the break.

The ET segment before the show aired was CHEAP PR. It just showed one more time that CARUSO is the show and nobody else. After reading Ann Donague's comment in the New York post about David Caruso I start to wonder how deep someone can crawl into the ass of another person. "David this, David that..." Get a grip lady, it is his job which he gets paid for royally! We can expect him to do more than the rest.

It wasn't Matthew that shot the Marine at the range; it was his blonde friend.
It was an ok episode. I'm glad it didn't have too much to do with Natalia or Ryan because I don't like them and there's been too much of them this season. I would like to see more of Khandi Alexander also and would love to see a Calleigh episode.

I was so glad to see Rob Estes also. I have been a fan since "Silk Stalkings". Hopefully he continues to make these appearances. My only complaint is that everytime he makes an appearance Natalia is sure to show up. I totally enjoyed this epi. Maybe the writers have finally remembered how to write. This epi was 100% better than the past two weeks. Hopefully it keeps going in this direction.

I thought this was a great episode and a huge improvement on the first few of the season. The topic was timely and handled well and the closing scene was very moving. And Ryan's line to the recruiting officer about staying frosty was hilarious!

I agree this one was better than most. Only one silly line by Horatio. The Marine storyline was hard to watch because my neighbors/friends' grandson was killed there last week and he kinda looked like the fallen Marine too. The song at the end was great, and there were some good lines by Ryan.
One thing I can't buy is the cooperation by the military with the local law enforcement and their willingness to learn the truth about the Marine's death. Another local fallen Marine's death 2 years ago is still not resolved so I know better.
Valera's character is smart enough to be working in a crime lab, yet agrees to go out with the co-worker's abusive ex? Yuk! But some women are like that.

I didn't really care for this episode. The whole story seemed like such a stretch - and seemed a gimmick to bring a war-themed show to Miami.
I also thought it was incredibly confusing.
The only bright spot - the few seconds of Rob Estes.

Maybe I've watched Saving Private Ryan too often, but I thought the armed services had a policy regarding blood relatives serving in the same unit - namely, that this was against policy and would not be allowed.
Also, I was just talking to some friends at work about this, so apologies if this is an old joke here. New drinking game rule: take a drink every time Horatio takes off his sunglasses while talking.

Ths show is sooooooo over the top now!!! I personally thought this episode was ridiculous from the standpoint that, why would Miami CSI be involved!!! If not for the beautiful women from week to week, I probably would drop Horatio out of my television rotation!!! How shallow am I???? BTW, some of my friends have also talked about having a Horatio drinking game for all those typical Horatio-isms!!! We'd all be wasted half way thru the program.
