November 20, 2006: I Cannot Believe I Took a Bullet for You

"Going, Going, Gone," was certainly comprehensive, and, for the most part, it was actually pretty good. Before I get to the last 10 minutes, I’d like to say that the first plotline that was introduced was a nice change of pace from what we’ve had lately. It was a straight-up boy-meets-girl, boy-loses-girl, boy-kills-girl story that make up the better episodes of this show. Rebecca had simply outgrown her fiancé, and so he stabbed her with a letter opener. However, we did finally get to see Alexx talk to a dead body again, after weeks of her not having much to do. Speaking of that scene, it was very cute when she pulled the camera up to her face to ask Ryan if he wanted to come do her job. I especially loved the exchange between her and Calleigh after Calleigh told Ryan he was doing a great job: “Hey, hey, hey, what about me?” “You’re fabulous!”

Johnny Whitworth was back as Jake Berkeley — the undercover cop who can’t do anything right, but seems to do no wrong. He got Rebecca killed, but he also saved Calleigh’s life, and the degree of flirtiness between the two of them on the pier at the end indicates that he’ll probably pop up several more times this season.

And now to those last 10 minutes. Seriously? I’m not totally sure how they managed to tack a terrorist attack subplot onto a typical murder story line (especially since the actual murder had absolutely nothing to do with the attack, except by CSI: Miami’s increasingly circuitous logic), but the fact is that Season 4 of 24 did it better (and it had Shohreh Aghdashloo). For those of you who may have fallen asleep before the end, it turned out that terrorists who wanted to blow up a nuclear power plant were blackmailing Peter Kinkella and had kidnapped his family. Hence, all of the heroin-dealing, and the "bachelorette auctions" (cough, cough) were to raise money to get them back. George (our Viagra popper, who bought off both Rebecca and the Homeland Security agent) was in fact working with the terrorists to pack plastic explosives into trucks.

Based on all of this information, it would seem that we should be grateful that Rebecca’s jilted fiancé decided to kill her, or the Turkey Lake power plant would have been destroyed, and no one would be visiting Miami during the holidays.

I appreciate that this show is trying to be a little more political this season, but the fact is, I enjoyed the less-controversial plotline last night a lot more than the end. We had some great light moments, like that scene in the morgue that I mentioned above, or when Rebecca’s ex said (in the funniest line from the episode), “We’re from Virginia! We met in a church, if you can believe it!” Even Calleigh and Jake’s scene at the end was kind of sweet. I was therefore surprised when the murder investigation was wrapped up with at least one commercial break to go, as I was thinking that this was such a strong episode.

Overall, I was happy with last night’s show, and I’m not going to count the terrorist plotline against them because it felt so disconnected. On the plus side, it’s given me incentive to get excited for 24, though I don’t think that’s quite what they were going for.

Leah I agree with you that the terrorist plot did seem to me to be a bit far out. I got lost along the way, cause by the time the boyfriend admitted to the killing, to me that would have been the end of it, so the sub-plot to me was a bit long-winded. I almost missed the fact that the viagra-popper was involved, and I can't see how, or why. He seemed very horny and that that was all he was interested in. I still enjoyed the show though, and I did love the banter between Calleigh and the cop guy, and also Alexx's banter. I still enjoyed the show overall, and loved seeing the actress from (gosh I can't remember the show, it was the Lifetime TV show with Nancy McKeon, and she was a cop), the African-American actress. Can't remember the show, or her name, but she was also in The Wood with Taye Diggs as his ex-girlfriend. Anyone could help with that?

I think that same actress played a part in CSI this year as well. I think she was the ex wife of one of the chainsaw massacre victims from one of the early shows. She sure looked familiar. Good actress as well.

I liked this episode tonight. I thought it was a bit far-fetched though that Calleigh seemed to suffer very little effects from the shot to the kevlar vest. I would have thought she'd have been in alot of pain or out of breath, etc. and the fact that no matter WHAT is going on Horatio saves the day is at once both sort of silly yet totally addictive. You knew he'd get that flammable tank in one shot. Go H! Oh God, I'm calling him H now... I need help! I totally dig CSI Miami. It's good entertainment! I also enjoyed the look H gave the terrorist lady at the end. If looks could kill she'd be 6 feet under pushing up daisies. I thought the way the terrorist plot came up so suddenly at the end of the episode was scarily realistic because we actually never do know when something might happen. There is never warning really. One minute life is one way and the next it's another.

Ummmm, worst plot line EVER....like Homeland Security would let John Wayne Horatio Caine go galavanting around rounding up terrorists and blowing up their vehicle transports. This was quite possibly one of the most ridiculous episodes ever....crime scene investigation? Where?

Second thing, kevlar aside, I would think getting felled by a bullet to the chest would tend to shake one up just a bit...wasn't Speedle slightly more physcially impacted by his shooting (granted it was with like a Tech-9 at point blank range) but still. Let's hope Calleigh ends up hooking up with Joaquin Phoenix wannabe and Horatio & Natalia become a pair too - and at the end of season 5 everybody is happy ever after...OR?

Of course Horatio had to be the one to blow up the truck. ????OMG. I have my doubts about Homeland Security being effective, but letting the local CSI unit take down a terrorist was over the top. I still love the scenery and some of the cast, so I'll always watch, ignoring the lack of credibility...... Jake is really cute, but his upper lip looks scarred. The last time he was in the show I thought it was part of his injuries, but it's still the same. Cute all the same. Calleigh could do worse for a boy toy.

How could Horatio not ask the home owner to show him the cut on his hand (alibi was that he cut his hand on letter opener) and how could the entire team miss the fingerprints on the door which the boyfriend shoved open with his hand?
Large oversights if you ask me.

Where exactly was the flammable tank on the semi? It seemed to be on the front somewhere which would be VERY dangerous. I didn't get that. I also didn't get the idea of a nuclear power plant being on the coast where hurricanes hit, but oh well.
I knew that Horatio would be the one to take out the truck and save the day like always. I also thought about how if that woman hadn't been killed then the terrorists would have won, so maybe the killer boyfriend could maybe use that at his trial.
Has Horatio ever been shown doing anything in the lab at all? That would be believalbe because the boss doesn't always do the same type of work as the underlings. Just wondering.
I like the banter between coworkers.
Anyway, I loved it when the Homeland Security Agent said that Caine would be the first person she'd call in Miami whenever anything came up again. Yeah right.

In season 1 he was doing lab-work almost every episode. In season 2 it became less and in season 3 NONE.
I think that has something to do with the fact that Caruso has dificulties to do fine-motoric work with his hands.
He is good at shooting but not at work that demands a certain skill with hands.

H. not good with his hands? Are we talking about the same hands-on-hips, sunglass flipping guy? Caruso's a genius with the damatic gestures. ;)

I've sort of gotten the feeling that H (and Mac, on CSI:NY) play a role more like that of Brass on the original than of Grissom, in that both of them seem to be more cop than scientist. They both hold police ranks, which I don't believe the CSIs do, and they both seem to do more "cop work" than Grissom does. Or something like that ;)

In some ways, I've kind of decided to take CSI:Miami as a bit more of a "fantasy" show than a "gritty crime procedural" because that way, H can be the sunglass-whipping, fast-quipping, constitutional rights stripping super-cool macho cop who can always save the day and look smooth doing it, all without too much cognitive dissonance in my head.

For most of the lab work you need FINEMOTORIC SKILLS. (Best shown in season 1, episode "Loosing face" when Caruso re-builds a bomb - it took him 3 days to learn how to do it.) Putting your hands on your hips is just a gesture. Did you notice who Caruso/Caine always fidgetes with his hands when he is talking to someone? Most of the time he is holding his sunnies to hide this "tick". Meaning he doesn't know what to do with his hands.
