February 26, 2007: But He Stole My Pic-a-nic Basket
OK, let’s work this one out together. Of the three men on the “mancation” — sidenote: has anyone in the history of anything ever called a vacation a mancation? Or am I tragically unhip? — the one who wasn’t Dennis or Rob (but whose name I never caught) killed Tess, and Dennis killed the bodyguard Rocko. Then he got nervous and wanted to call the cops, so Rob and not-Rob smeared Dennis’ vest with vanilla bought from the man from Deliverance so that the only grizzly bear living in the Everglades could maul Dennis. Everyone got it so far? Then, it turns out that Tess was only at the hotel in the first place because Anna had to make her demo tape. But because Anna was actually part of a prostitution ring, Horatio is in trouble with a horny politico played by Ed Begley Jr.
Now my head hurts.
Maybe it’s because this show airs late-ish and my brain isn’t in working order. Then again, maybe it’s because the plot made no sense. Last week I praised this show for a relatively narrow focus. This week, the focus was still narrow (there were really only two stories), but the pacing and arrangement of the episode caused a breakdown of massive proportions. Each piece of the story made sense, but it didn’t all make sense together. I found myself wishing for the relatively simplistic Army-recruit episode from December.
Also, I feel like I missed something with Supervisor O’Shay. Has he been introduced before? In looking through Ed Begley Jr.’s credits, I can’t find any evidence of another appearance on this show, but the way he was introduced gave the impression that we should know who he was. What is he the supervisor of? Why does he hate Horatio (aside from the obvious reasons — yes, I read all of your comments and know very well your feelings on Caine)?
However, it’s nice to know that even a C-grade (I’m being very generous here) episode can still give us an A-rated Horatio line: “That means our victim… was the bait.” Cue Roger Daltrey.
I could be harsher on this episode and give it a D, but I really do think it was a victim of a poorly arranged plot. Imagine how much more smoothly it could have gone if they’d concluded the “mancation” part before introducing us to Anna and the prostitution ring? We might have had more time to understand just who this Supervisor O’Shay was, and why this group of prostitutes was so in demand. And that’s not a sentence I ever thought I’d type.
Next week is a rerun, so until we meet again, beware of bears, prostitutes and Ed Begley Jr.

I agree! I spent a lot of this show saying "what?" and not the wait a minute let's try to figure this out fun stuff like with Lost, but the are you kidding, who cares kind of thing. I usually enjoy CSI: M but tonight didn't cut it for me. In fact, I fell asleep the last five minutes and haven't the vaguest idea how it ended, after they took away the supervisor. I too wondered who he was - only I didn't really care. I thought it was just me, and that the second glass of wine with dinner might have dulled my brain, but it was one of the few times I was disappointed in this show.

Same here. I was watching and all of a sudden went WHAT.THE.HELL.IS.GOING.ON? LOL I really can't even remember now how it ended. The main impressions I took away from it were that H now has a new enemy because he needs an enemy, a new damsel in distress (who looks alot like Marisol) to save because he needs a damsel to save and that Eric still isn't quite right. Oh wait I remember the end now. Horatio said 'that's the only thing I know how to do' when Anna said "you're really into this Protect and Serve thing" (she said it twice in the ep.) Not the best ep but still enjoyable.

The 2 buddies didn't smear the other buddy with the vanilla stuff...he got it on his vest when they dumped the girl in the glades. It had been rubbed on the trees by the hunting guide, the buddy rubbed up against the trees and it got all over his vest. The other 2 buddies had intended to just "accidently" shoot him while on the hunting trip that day, but instead the bear took care of him for them.

Ahh... another stunningly fantastic episode of CSI:Miami. (sarcasm )
It is nice to see Delko hasn't made a completely miraculous recovery-- he's still have memory trouble. At least they're keeping a little continuity, despite his speedy release from the hospital.
I'm not from Florida, and this may be a stupid question-- do they really let people live in the Everglades? I thought it was a preserve? Altho, I guess not all of it is. It just seemed a bit odd that there's this guy just chillin' out there.
Does it disturb anyone else that Alexx calls dead male corpses "baby boy"?
At least Calleigh was wearing appropriate clothes two weeks in a row. Ditto for Alex. Wow, and Boa Vista too? I'm in shock. It's a threefer! Do they issue white pants as part of the CSI:Miami dress code? Seriously, someone has to wear white pants in every episode.
Anna's got an attitude. Whoa. She totally gets H's game. Isn't she a bit young for him? And she's a stripper. LOL @ the new HoBride. And she was wearing white at the end. This one's a bit of a rebel, though. EW! The look he gave her at the end! She gonna die soon. And she's literally a ho. I love it.
And this week's it's Calleigh's turn to play entomologist.
And all it takes to bust a john for pandering is to ask the hooker- with-a-heart- of-gold, "did he pay you for sex?" And to think of all those police departments who go to the trouble of having undercover officers setting up elaborate ruses to wait for (under surveillance) that exact moment when money changes hands for the express purposes of sex. You all have been wasting your time! Of course, in addition to taking the prostitute at her word, she isn't busted for committing a crime, too.
It took two CSI's to push the 3 inches of dead palm fronds and make the discovery?!
I love how in the flashback, the body isn't even covered that well-- you can still see the freakin' arm! Apparently the CSIs are the smartest people in Miami (no offense to anyone in Miami!).

I am so much of a Carruso hater! It started on NYPD Blue and has continued on CSI-Cuba. Did anyone catch Jim Carey's dead on impression of Carruso on Letterman? LMAO

I tried to watch this show last night because there really was nothing else on. But it was so stupid, one why would they dump the girls body right next to the water and not in the water. It is the everglades I think they would never had found her. Second who ever clean that expensive looking hotel room did not notice while moping that a tile was loose and had blood under it! I finally just turned off the TV and got some sleep..I really am tired of CSI-Miami and CSI- NY - if nothing else is on I watch the other CSI. This and law and order could go away and I would be happy!!

Well I'm going to start with the positives of this epi. 1. No high speed humvee chase. 2. All the female CSI were finally dressed professionally. No exploding bosums this week. 3. Continuity on the Delko recovery. 4. HorMan kept his posturing to a minimum tonight. He actually turned and faced people square on when he spoke to them. I'm betting he is a nail biter which is why he is always playing with his sunglasses. Thats all I have for this epi.
Now the writers are recycling stories from the other shows in the franchise. Yuck CSI did a bear vs hunter story a season or two ago, and it wasn't any better. That little gizmo that Ryan had is amazing. Its better than a blood hound and runs on batteries. Led them right to the vanilla using bear attractant making swamp dweller. I wonder if they make one for lost car keys. This is when I knew this show was going down the tubes fast. So these Mancation hunters picked the one part of the Glades that their guide chose to spread the bear love potion, and the trouble maker of the bunch was the one to get it all over his vest. That was a huge stretch for me. I have to agree why didn't they throw the body in the water instead of leaving it on the shore. Gators would have made quick work of the corpse. Hopefully after this round of repeats we are given some actually good stories. One last question How many arch nemisis does one character actually need? Ed Begley Jr I enjoy watching but I have misgivings about this character.

It's hard enough to blog about shows I like, but to write about shows I hate just wouldn't be time well spent. I like CSI's (all of them) and don't depend on their factual content to do so. I don't watch 24, Prison Break and many others, but don't find it necessary to verbally crucify them on this site. If you like a show, YOU JUST DO !! Don't like it? Same thing. I like to read informative blogs about shows I watch in case I miss something. My favorite bloggers know who they are and don't make me feel stupid for liking certain shows.

Ed Begley is probably a County Supervisor. He threatened to cut Horatio's budget and his crew work for the county.
They do have a tendency to use coincidence too often. The guys probably did not dump her in the water because they would have to get wet. The question they left unanswered was did Dennis's friends break his knee on purpose so he could not escape the bear.
The guys might have refused maid service in their room after the murders. Also, some hotels do not clean every part of the room every day.

I agree that this episode was a bit over the top, and not horribly realistic. I taped it tonight, since there is no more Studio 60 conflict (that is soooo another topic) but was watching it and fell asleep. No great loss, I am feeling like recycle and dumb are all they have to offer. However as a note, I am feeling that same way about CSI The Original. I never saw the Ed Begley character also, and think it is there for conflict and added "drama" since we have lost the continuing bad guy. I will give it a couple of weeks more, with no conflict, but come on, lets get some real stories.

Maybe it's just me - but I didn't realize that Grizzly bears lived in the Everglades. Are they a native species there?

The morons dumped the woman's body where they did because it was the part of the Everglades they were familiar with. It was also in the vicinity of where they'd be meeting the hunting guide that day so it was convenient. Little did they know that the hunting guide had put lure on trees in the area surrounding where they'd be hunting that day to insure they'd see the bear. They all three got the lure on their clothing from brushing up against the trees on the way to dump the women's body. The dead hunter's friend did indeed intentially incapacitate him by hitting him behind the knee with the rifle but. The incapacitated hunter then got malled by the bear while the other two hunter's got away. This was a spur of the moment change from the original plan of "accidently" shooting the guy while out hunting. As for why they didn't dump the woman's body in the swamp perhaps they didn't have time to weight her body down so that it would sink or perhaps they didn't want to get wet or risk an encounter with a gator, who knows? What we do know is that they thought the land animals would take care of the corpse for them.
