May 14, 2007: Y?
Well, it was no, “We’re going to Brazil.” In fact, it didn’t even feel like a season finale. Where was the cliff-hanger? Where was the oh-my-god moment? It’s a sad indicator of the state of CSI: Miami when the scariest aspects of an episode are the fashions. Was there ever a more disturbing haircut than that sported by Mama Wade? And was Ryan wearing a pseudo-Members Only jacket?
It’s depressing, really, because this one had potential. In the end, both Lucas and Lindsay Wade were murderers. She killed their other sister by pushing her down the stairs when they were all children, and everyone blamed little Lucas because he was supposedly genetically predisposed to violence. He took this to heart, and as an adult just started murdering women. Because it was her fault that Lucas did this, Lindsay decided to kill another woman to get her brother off the hook. Oh, and back in his corrupt traffic-cop days, Ryan pulled Lucas over, but had no reason to suspect he was a murderer. (I’m not sure that that can be determined simply by the way one drives, but then again, I’m from New Jersey, where no one drives well.) Still, Ryan could not forgive himself. “Who knows how many women I could have saved?” he lamented. That’s a very noble thought, Ryan, but it’s time to realize that you are not the nexus of the universe.
The shocker of the episode? Calleigh got kissed. And not by Eric, but by ex-boyfriend Jake. It seems as though the writers might have forgotten that Calleigh and Jake were supposed to have dated in the past, or maybe they just chose to ignore it. Either way, it certainly allowed for some serious drama when Eric was forced to watch Jake kiss Calleigh. That look that the potential soul mates shared across the hallway after? Definitely the highlight of the night.
And maybe that was the problem. We had all the requisite pieces of a good CSI: Mepisode, but none of it really came together. The only story line that we could care about was Eric and Calleigh’s. Ryan’s continuing redemption was abbreviated and hollow, Natalia just seemed to appear places, Alexx didn’t have much to do, and no matter how guilty a pleasure that final shot of Horatio on a rooftop was, there just wasn’t enough worth caring about to make this a good regular episode — let alone a decent season finale.
I’m looking forward to reading all of your thoughts on this episode and on the season as a whole. Many thanks to all of you readers who stuck with me this season through the voodoo practitioners, exploding courtrooms, gambling addicts and all the many, many Hummer chases.

I agree, what happened to the big finale cliffhanger? Did they just change their minds. I thought that this episode was pretty boring, I hope that the finales of NY and LV are better than this. The one thing I did enjoy about this episode was Eric being jealous. If that is what it was. Also what was the whole point of Horatio standing on that roof.

It sucked. I'm not sure why I watch this show anymore...not for the plots or the one-liners, thats for damn sure.

Wasn't HoCaine supposed to be in MORTAL DANGER - A. Donahue said he would be almost killed?
HoCaine on the rooftop? I was waiting for him to go down on his knees and to pray. Horatio's posing in his costume on the roof was pretty much just a new take on him posing with the Jesus statue in Rio.
Cheesy beginning and cheesy ending. Just like last year. They promised us a great finale (TV Guide anyone) but we were let down again...never trust AD or spoilers she might drop.
If I had to judge which season finale was better - season 4 or season 5 - I daresay (I never thought I would)season 4 even with the cheesy "We're going to Brazil"-line.
Once again HoCaine was the child-whisperer. Creepy and annoying

I, too thought it was pretty boring. No cliffhanger, no reveal, no nothing of substance.
I think this season has been more about fashion than anything else. Are we really to believe that female cops dress the way these women do? I mean how ridiculous are the heels Calleigh wears, or the super tight stretch tops of Boa Vista, not to mention the often way over the top cleavage of our beloved coroner.....
I guess what I'm trying to say is that the scripts are too often not believable any longer. Plots seem forced and sometimes the tie together moments just are too far fetched...

Maybe it's just me, but Jake just seems like Christian Slater-lite. I'd rather have the real thing.

I concur with the others that this wasn't a good season finale. And I think I mentioned in this post two episodes ago that Eric better make his move on Calleigh before it's too late. Well... it's too late.
Maybe someone can explain to me. Ryan is going through old cases to explain how thousands of dollars ended up in his bank account... Wouldn't he know where the money came from?
Finally, I agree with another entry: I hope the other CSI finales are better.

No, Spider-Man Ryan is going thru old cases not for the money. Everyone knows where the money came from but there is the worry that b/c he knew the guy he may have compromised evidence in the case. So his integrity is in question, so far as what other cases he may have compromised for personal gain.

Is anyone else getting tired of Horatio's super-human crime-solving abilities? He should be on Heroes! He is constantly pointed out things his collegues miss from six feet away! What really made me laugh was when Eric told him that the surviving son "won't talk to anyone" and H says "he'll talk to me." He can't even finish asjking the kid what happened when it all come out like a Chatty Kathy! What's this creepy thing H has with kids?.....Bad season finale!

You know, I felt the same way... like this wasn't even a season finale... more like just a pretty good episode.
First and foremost, Calleigh's catwoman outfit freaked me out but all was redeemed on that score by the smoldering/hurt look Eric had when she kissed that guy who looks VERY much like the Internal Affairs guy who is taunting Ryan (doesn't he)
Horatio on the Rooftop made me burst out laughing because I was like Y?? Maybe that was the whole point of the episode.
I did enjoy this ep though... don't get me wrong it just didn't have a season finale feel. Plus, I hate to compare shows but after Heroes last night, Miami just felt like 'Whatever'. Plus the 30 second commercial alone for CSI Vegas makes me need to take a shot to calm down so that one seems geared to be great... Miami just wasn't Season Finale material. Y??

I agree with everyone's comments about the finale not being one. Trouble is there I was enjoying last night's show without remembering it was to be the finale. It was only in reading it here that I got disappointed. I'm surprised there wasn't a cliff hanger - maybe it wasn't intended as the finale - or maybe they wanted to be different since every other show has a cliff hanger. So I'll just go back to my enjoyment feeling I had last night when I didn't remember it was finale time!! I too couldn't figure why H was on the roof - nor how he knew the kid would talk to him. Thought for a minute we'd see a kid he'd had a b.g. with but no. Maybe we should just look at both as a so what moment and just not always look for perfection here. I too liked the Caleigh/Delco part of things and wonder where this will take us - if it continues to play a role next season. Meanwhile I'll enjoy the hiatus - gives me a chance to play VCR catch up and I'll just look forward to next season.

Jerri, I didn't ask the question properly. From what the Internal Affairs said/implied, I thought Ryan had gambled or received a payoff from another case. I just wondered what going through past cases will do if he said (truthfully) that he didn't compromise other cases.

Sonnet53, I agree, after Heroes and DWTS, CSI Miami was like deflating a ballon. The most tense moments were the last 3 w/Eric, Calleigh and Jake. And Jake's voice gets on my nerves. It is great in Christian Slater but not from him and that scar bothers me for some reason. I understand the voice and the scar is part of the actor but as part of the character it is as if he is trying to hard to be a bad ass.

What was up with Frank? Why did he look so sad at the end.
I haven't watched the show much this season (I have college on Mondays, no VCR/TIVO). I just don't get why Boa Vista is even on the show, Frank and Alexx are way under used.
Screwed up Ryan's character and I don't like Calleigh and Delko together at all. I like her with John.
This was a season ending episode? It was rather flat.

GwenRobby, i was thinking the same thing. we've had enough of the christian slater thing, and he stole it from jack nicholson, so we really dont need a third. also, that actor is sooo not appealing for many reasons----calleigh needs some therapy for her choices in men! i also mix up him and the FBI guy going after wolf.
i am one who'd like to see a little calleigh-eric storyline, but i dont see how they can manage that after the old "working together" convo!
one thing that really bugged me---it sure was convenient that the loosened wheel fell off the van right where bad guy's old cell mate was waiting with a saw. i suppose he could have been following on his motorcycle, but just seems like lazy writing to me!
