January 4, 2007: Bye Bye, Gil

Welcome to 2007, everyone. I planned on an emotional ride for my first new episode of the calendar year, but I really didn't get that.

Grissom's going on sabbatical — we knew that part. How the last episode played out was going to be the story. But it really wasn't. There wasn't that much drama at all. Hodges was the first to find out and got him a college sweatshirt and started talking to Gil about his "crazy times" at the school since he was a student there. Cat then found out she was going to be acting supervisor and, like a good CSI, she'd be focused more on her cases instead. The moment with Warrick was good, when Gil told him he was "the rock of the team... be there for Catherine like you were for me." That's cool coming from a guy who gives out such little praise. Nick is certainly the funniest one, though. Thinking Gil won't be back at all, he goes up and hugs him:

Gil: "I'll be back in four weeks, stop hugging me."
Nick: "Yes, sir."

Ha!

The scene with Sara is what I was expecting, but it was still disappointing. "I'll miss you" from Grissom is about as lovey-dovey as he gets, but the big old L-word would have been nice, as would have been a little more interaction between the two of them. Typical Gil Grissom style, though.

The case Cat was working on was strange for me in many ways. First of all, in the opening scene, she really needed to put on a better poker face on the stand. It's one thing to answer a question that might cast some doubt on a conviction, but she was fidgeting, frowning and sighing. If I were a juror and the CSI made those faces, I'd vote not-guilty, too. Some other things that don't fly right for me: The sheriff told Cat that her best friend was killed the night all these murders happened, but three years later the bullet was still in the table (and Nick found it in 30 seconds). I know the sheriff isn't exactly Nick Stokes, but I would have thought she might have put some effort into that crime scene since the blood put her best friend right there. And how about back at the house, where nothing had been touched for three years? The blood was still around, the bullets were in the backyard. Maybe I shouldn't find it so hard to believe that with a confession the cops didn't bother to get the other bullets or clean the house up, but after seven seasons of CSI, I'm just used to 100 percent thoroughness. Also, can the Reno lab actually get any results? The Vegas lab can get your life story from a hair, but the Reno lab can't seem to find anything. Finally, how many of you are going to comment on the unprofessional technique Cat used on that Guffey guy the sheriff locked up? I could go either way on this one. I mean, sure you can say that she should be able to do her job without flashing the bra and showing some cleavage, but then you could also say she's clever for using what her mama gave her. In the end, who's going to argue with a little Marg Helgenberger boob shot? No sir. Not I. But it really all came down to the kid. I've said it before in my blogs: If you want to get the real truth, talk to the kid. A kid has no reason to do anything but tell the truth.

So I guess now we have a while to look forward to the guys below Grissom really bonding and maybe getting a closer look at each one of them again. I've enjoyed this season very much, but I feel that I've lost touch with almost all of the characters since there's usually one or two each week who get only three lines.

And of course!!! The doll is back. How naive of me to think that, even though we got no answer on what the doll meant in the miniature killings, that meant that the story line was over. The most talked-about story line next to GSR continues!

Looks like no new epiosde next week, so until the 18th, friends.

What bugged me about this ep was that the commercials made it seem like Grissom leaving was a) going to leave everyone assuming he was leaving forever and b) everyone being VERY upset. Instead they took a much lighter turn. Loved Nick's mortified look after hugging Grissom. The GSR was beyond disappointing but as you said, David, pretty much what I expected... which is sad because when you get what you expect it means a show is predictable. The Catherine case didn't interest me really because I kept thinking Grissom's leaving, cut back to him! Cut back to him! Alas, we got very little Grissom screen time. I love CSI but I think it's about time they start thinking about putting a little more heart into the show. One can only hope Gil realizes he was a dope and maybe calls Sara up to tell her as much. I mean couldn't he have at least let her drive him to the airport? oh wait, that would mean the writers would have to clarify GSR - something they are either scared or unwilling to do at this point. Long suffering Sara can't get a break. As to the miniature model killer being back THANK GOODNESS. It was the best part of the ep. Now my only question is - given the box to Grissom was marked 'confidential' will it sit there for 4 weeks unopened? What a welcome back Gris will get! All in all, I was diappointed with this episode but I am looking forward to seeing the other characters who, like you said, I feel like I've completely lost touch with. Cast bloat!

I for one have a problem with Catherine’s completely unprofessional way of getting a suspect to talk. It felt like it was put in there to remind the viewers (just in case we forgot-but how could me with her boobs popping out over nearly ever dead body in the show) that she is indeed the sex symbol.

We get it; stop slapping us in the face with it. Also in episodes like this I find her character nothing more then a cartoon, the typical “smooth cowgirl out for justice”.

I would have liked to see more of the rest of the cast; I like “all hands on deck” cases or ones that involve at least three of the CSI’s. I agree with the person who said, “Cast bloat!” We certainly did not need the addition of Sophia-I barely remember Brass’s face since her arrival. And we already have Catherine, we don’t need another stereotypical ice woman. I guess that’s why Sara became my favorite character so quickly-she’s multi-layered, confident and vulnerable, beautiful in her own way and subtle about it.

And lastly, Grissom and Sara. I get the impression they talked about it at home. But it annoys me that they refuse to show anything more then vague multi interpretation scenes between these too. They claim “not too much personal stuff”- well I think a lot of us would be happy if they took the wealth of personal stuff we see about Catherine, and pass it on to the other characters. CSI Vegas is what it is because of ALL its main players, stop stifling them.

People - remember that Cat was a stripper in her early years - that kind of attitude does not just go away - unprofessional or not! Good episode, not great, I too am also glad that the doll is back!!

I had the same reaction to Catherine's actions on the stand. But I suppose she was right in surmising that their evidence did not prove his guilt.
I also thought the whole woman sheriff thing was odd. I was beginning to think the sheriff had done it or something because I just couldn't believe everything about her case was so inept.

As for Catherine using her boob shots, well, given Catherine's past "profession" and the feisty gal she is, it seemed in character to me. She knew what it was going to take and she did it, ethical or not. I wasn't surprised.

Loving that the miniature house/doll mystery isn't over. When Gus was packing up the houses, I just had a feeling we hadn't seen the last of that story. Yippee.

As for Gus and Sara, I'm not loving that storyline anyway, but that could be how stupidly they're writing it. She asks him if he really is going....makes me think that maybe they're not living together. She should have known this before the others did if they're really together. Gus is just Gus. He can't show any emotions and if she's with him, she's probably accepted that by now. It's just a weird relationship especially for those of us who have never seen people act like this in a relationship. And one I don't care about.

I, too, want more of the rest of the cast. Particularly Warrick and Catherine having some more "close" time, and definitely more Brass and even the doc.

I didnt mind Cat using the "blouse" at all, (I was wondering why they were showing her buttoning it on her way to see him though, lol) I think you must have to use what ever you can to get prisoners to talk.
I'm way frustrated with the Sara/Gil story! I want more of those two as a couple!
I agree with who ever wrote that they were use to 100% by the crime labs/police. So the sherriff doing such a poor job was annoying. I have a feeling in the real world, the crime fighting is done more like the sherriff lady.

misslili, I sure have to agree with your last paragraph. that does seem like it would be more the norm....though the sheriff not collecting all the evidence from both of her crime scenes...obvious stuff...seemed a little out there.

pinkie, it's Gil or Gris. Not Gus.

Ok, usually I comment, but today I'm asking questions... I'm confused about a couple of things... I hate the "Holiday Hiatus" each year... by the time the shows are new again, I've seen so many repeats that I forget some things.

1) Wasn't the miniature maker the same guy who blew his brains out on the webcam as Gil watched or am I confusing him with someone else? I remember being upset about unanswered questions this guy's death left...

2) Did I miss the resolution of the kidnapping/murder of the Sherriff's best friend and her daughter? Did they ever find them or their bodies?

And one comment:
3) So far, a lot of posters have discussed Gil's stoic behavior and his lack of ability to express loving feelngs toward Sara (or at least from what we've been shown... who knows what goes on behind closed doors?). Yet, watching the final exhange between them it seemed to me that it was Sara who was holding back... and she seemed angry, too. When he said that he was indeed leaving, she shot back a nonchalant, "See you when you get back." She then turned away and continued rifling through her locker. He stepped forward, looking to say more and put forth a "I'll miss you..." that she seemed less than happy about and then looked pained as he walked away. I got the feeling that if there was a cold fish in that relationship... it's HER.

Grissom is a stand off kind of guy that doesn't do well with touchy-feely stuff. Example his reaction to Nick hugging him. The I will miss you was a huge step for Grissom. And I agree it does look like Sarah is the angry, pushing away part of the relationship. People talk about Kat doing things that is out of character or unprofessional but if Grissom discussed his and Sarah's personal life on the job it wouldn't only be unprofessional it would be out of character as well. Grissom is a private person and an office relationship is extremely inapporiate.

On the show in general is was a snooze fest except for the last few seconds. I am glad to see the minature story line back.

To the person that posted before me I too can not remember to answer question 1, but for question 2 no they never solved the case for the sheriffs missing friend and daughter.

This was a wonderful episode. And, yes, my favorite parts were Nick hugging Gil and his embarrassed look when Gail told him to stop hugging him, and when Gil told Sara he'd miss her. I got the feeling that he was opening up to her a bit more, though it would have been nice to see him kiss or at least hug her! And, yes, I was disappointed that the previews of the episode made it sound like this big emotional farewell for Grissom, but come on...when do you remember Grissom showing major emotion towards his colleagues where a life and death situation wasn't involved?
I did like the story of Nick and Catherine and the Finch murderer. That guy creeped me out. Is it me, or did ya'll get the feeling that he may have known right from wrong but couldn't function beyond a grade school level? And it was good to see the chemistry between Catherine and Adam Novak (her husband in real life!). I liked the sort of showdown in the station between Nick and Novak.
All in all, this was a great episode. I am going to miss Grissom, as I'm sure all of you are. It's going to be interesting to see how the lab functions without him and how his colleagues miss him as well. Come back soon Gil! CSI RULES!!
P.S. Mimicpdc, Sara doesn't spell her name with an H.
Also, I loved the little cliffhanger at the end of the episode when that package was left on Gil's desk after he'd already left. You know, the one with the sort of pictures from the miniature-making serial killer. Could it be that the story isn't over?!

LOL My Bad. Thanks, sullyinma, for the correction. Guess he just seems like a Gus to me. I'm not the best with names so this isn't the first time for me!! Dang it.

In response to the last few posts, I think you're right when you say those bodies weren't found (sheriff's friend and daughter), and I think that's another reason I was suspicious about the sheriff...and particularly her not finding the obvious evidence left behind. I live in a small midwest town and in my experience, if the local cops realize they've not had much experience or the right tools, they will call in state investigators. Maybe the operative word here is "if".

The episode was just fine. Not every episode is going to reek of blood, gore, and action. That's never been what this program is about. I found it quite good actually. That Cat would use her boobs is not unbelievable. I suspect that cops everywhere use methods that are a bit unorthodox at times. So be it. It is a show on TV folks. Give them a break. They are allowed poetic license. Glad to see Marg's hubby back and hope to see him more throughout the season. Good foil for her. The action between Gil and Sara is perfect. Leave it alone folks. There wasn't even supposed to be a storyline about the two of them until fans started inventing one.

I actually really enjoyed this episode, despite the debates. I am soo glad the miniatures are back, because it really bugged me that they left so much unanswered..

I liked the current case, also, which is always a plus since the show is all about the cases. But it seems like this case was particularly thought out, which is great since it seemed like there have been few difficult cases to solve so far this season. I'm glad that it took some work for the CSIs.

I thought it was interesting that Grissom put the miniatures in glass cases, calling them "art-like". I guess this is true, but I dunno. Well, they'll certainly help in this next miniature case. Who'll solve it though? The new guy(Keppler), or will we have to wait for Grissom to get back? Will someone open Gris's mail? Probably not, so what will happen? So much suspense, lol. Well, I think this was a great episode, and I can't wait for the new one in two weeks.

To answer someones question before - the guy that shot himself on the webcam was indeed the man thought to be guilty of the mini scenes and murders. We know for a fact that he made all of the parts for the minis. Appartently, since we now have a new mini sitting on Gils desk - he wasnt the one making the scenes. Just the parts. Cant wait for Gil to get back and see this one his desk.
