February 8, 2007: The Return of Grissom
It's time for everyone to disagree with me again. When my opinion about an episode sways drastically one way or the other, it usually means everyone will think the exact opposite. So here's your chance. This was the best episode of the season!
If there were still any lingering questions about Keppler possibly showing up in a few episodes with Gil, they are all gone now. Last week, what I thought was a clear assumption that Keppler killed this "Amy" girl wasn't true at all. And thinking he killed the guy he thought raped her also turned out to be false. So I guess Mike really was trying to put his past behind him and move on. He was a cop that killed an innocent man, but in the end he actually didn’t seem that dirty compared to his buddy Frank. Man, Frank was really just going to hand the gun over so they could finger his buddy for the murder? That's crazy. And now, Mike is gone. A tough break since we finally saw some real emotion when he slammed the pimp's head into the table.
And hey, let's not forget the return of scraggly Gil Grissom! I kind of like the new Shaggy look on him and some time off gave him a much lighter side, too. He was very cordial with Sara. She told him that he looked good; he mentioned he'd see her that night. I had read that her initial reaction to his return would be negative, but I didn't pick that up in this episode. I mean, OK, she backed away because she smelled like garbage. But otherwise, Sara looked happy to see Gil back and he looked really happy to see her, too. Let's see how much this heats up again.
One of my favorite bits of dialogue was in this episode as well, when Grissom joined Warrick in the field and asked him what he was doing:
Warrick: I'm just following the leads off some serialized butt implants. Grissom: I missed Las Vegas.
Ha.
So now without Keppler, Gil will finally open his box, and next week we'll be back on the miniature-killer case. But, I'm assuming Keppler will come up again since Catherine was way too distraught over his death. I know the episode I missed a few weeks ago ended with them having a drink, but maybe the night didn't end there? A little hanky panky between Cat and Keppler? There had to be something with them; otherwise, how could she be attached enough in this short period of time to show that much emotion over him? We shall see.
Until next week, friends.

I totally agree! This episode was the best of the season. I can't believe, given how little I cared about Keppler thus far, how bad I felt when he died. I think it was because I was feeling it through Catherine who apparently did feel something deep for him; if nothing else than the hope of a romance blossoming. Sometimes just that hope, when it's gone, can break your heart. Frank was such a dirty SOB. I truly hated his character and give props to the actor who portrayed him for making me hate him so much. Does anyone else notice Nick stepping up in a big way lately? It's almost like he's poised to take over the team or something... I don't know, he just seems confident and like all up in everything. I was sort of relieved in a way that we won't have yet another cast member, Keppler, to get screen time but I did really feel bad for his situation and death. At least he's free from his tortured existence I suppose. Now, Grissom trailing after Sara down the hallway like a hound hot on the scent was fantastic given his usual reticence to show any emotion. I don't think I've ever seen that particular lascivious look on Grissom's face in what... 160 or so eps? Loved it. And I wonder what will surprise Sara when the cocoon hatches? LOL maybe an engagement ring will pop out!! *just kidding*
Also loved the fact that Hodges took Gil's course online as Spanky743 LOL that guy is lovably WIERD.
I liked Gil's quick embrace of Catherine at the end. Lord knows she needed it, she just fell apart there. I guess her husband dying, her Father dying, Warrick getting married, then losing Keppler. What's she got to hold onto? I was also happy to see Keppler pump not one, but 6 bullets into Frank, that SOB!! A shame WP and Liev didn't have a better/longer scene together. Actually, a shame we never got to see what happened when Grissom and Sara saw eachother 'later' but I'm assuming we're supposed to sort of know...
Great Episode. Now it's back to the miniature killer. Cool. Oh and scraggly Grissom is hot but I rather like the more tamed/tailored beard that's on the TV guide covers this week.

I, too, thought this was the best episode so far this season. Unlike many others on this blog, I liked the Keppler character and was disappointed that they killed him. I was hoping for a few guest appearances by Liev, oh well. At least his storyline was wrapped up nicely and answered all the questions. I was also curious about Catherine's emotions after talking to Keppler on the phone and then when he died.
Well, back to the miniature killer. Is it just me, but how come nobody else in the lab noticed the big box on Grissom's desk with no return address, even Sara? They could of at least questioned it even though they couldn't open it until Gil returned.
Weird.

Does anyone think that there still might be a possible Gil/Mike meeting in the future? I just hope that they leave things be and don't pull the "we faked his death to protect him" ruse

I posted close to two hours later than usual Sonnet and you still got the first comment! Excellent work.
Yeah, Nick's really making his voice heard. The really nice thing about this episode was that almost every one of the CSIs got good screen time. Nick, Warrick, Sara all got great scenes. Even the two lab techs got significant time. When the female tech (drawing a blank on the name) asked Keppler what he knew about butt implants and he answered "you don't need them," - priceless.
The Spanky thing was fuuny too. How can you not just love Hodges?
sue - if I'm not mistaken, one of them did casually mention the box in one of the episodes after Grissom left so they might have noticed it. That said though, it is kind of odd that no one was curious enough to ask him about it. Nor was he curious enough to open it before he went out into the field. Sort of like and unmarked box comes to him every day.

LOVED this episode. One of the best of the season. I started to like Keppler then he was gone.
I'm wondering why Cath was so broken up about it, she really did hardly know the guy.
And loved Grissom trailing Sara down the lab, he looked like he was ready to pounce her. If Grissom is one of the best then it would not surprise me to know that he get's packages and boxes all the time.

David/Sonnet53 --- I TOTALLY agree ... this episode was amazing ... as soon as it ended I said (to myself) Wow, what an episode! I had been thinking they were lackluster recently and somewhat rethinking my watching schedule (I watch CSI on Thurs while taping Supernatural, which I then watch at 10pm, and at commercial breaks catch parts of Grey's Anatomy which I then watch on Friday ... I have no life!). But, the previews looked good and I'm so glad I watched.
I liked Keppler (love Liev) but was glad that they ended his story arc the way they did ... so dramatic and tragic especially for Willows ... that poor woman has been through the wringer! I cried when he died but was so glad he got rid of the evil one. And what a way to do that!!
Those lines about the implants, classic CSI! Loved the looks between Sara and Gil ... such longing. And I do like the new look for him, sexy.
Really, an excellent episode.

I agree. Best episode of the year...a little confusing at first, but oh so good!
David--Grissom said he was putting off opening his mail, and he TRULY believed that the miniature killer was dead.

I guess they saved the best for last. This was the most interesting ep in the Keppler 4 part story arc. I was hoping he could come back in the future, but it's not to be.
Why is everyone questioning why Catherine was so upset? (I got a little teary eyed myself.) Keppler died trying to protect her from Frank's bullet, and she worked the closest with him during his time at the lab.

Yeah, I noticed it too: Cat was way too emotional over this guy's death.
And what officer races into a room without a gun drawn? Yeah, it's great that Keppler saved Cat, but she should have known better than to rush into a room without caution.
Not to make this a social issue, but when I saw Keppler's memory scenes with the black guy saying he didn't rape Amy, I wondered if an innocent man would be killed. It's just another reminder about the abuse of power by our law enforcement. Not all cops are bad, but stuff like this happens in the real world far too often. (ok, I'm off the soapbox)

I agree with about everyone, this was the best episode of the season, thus far...
Ok, first, when I saw Grissom I was screaming at the TV "Ok open that darn box!" I dig that story line a lot. And when we got a peek into the box and I saw the miniature I was like, ok when is he back!
I thought it was cute how he (Grissom) was following Sara down the hall and she was playing "coy" and wanting a shower... We can all imply what happened when she did see him later...
I liked Mike's character on the show, but to me he was more a profiler than a CSI... He tried to get into the killer's head (in my opinion) rather than following the evidence... Anyhow, I really liked, that although he was a "dirty cop" he wrapped up the whole Frank issues with a nice little bow... I liked that he got his justice for Amy and what her father did to her...
I'm with y'all that I don't understand why Cat got all emotional... I mean, yeah, they worked together, but I didn't get the whole "I'm emotionally attached to this man" feel until this episode... Their phone calls and seeing Cat's expressions and worries made me think that she had some kind of ties to him. I just don't know when they bloomed. Make sense?
Anyhow, I am glad we will be getting back to the miniature killer case next week. And maybe get a bit of a view of what happened between Sara and Gil.
Till next week...

Loved Loved Loved this episode!
I wanted so much for Grissom to open the box! At one point, I felt like Brad Pitt in Seven, shouting at the TV, "What's in the box?! What's in the box?!!!"
I can't wait for next week!

I agree with your entire review (and I don't usually.) This was a great episode. The actor who played Frank is Len Cariou who I saw on Broadway as Sweeney Todd. So much was going on between those actors (Liev and Len) just in the way they looked at each other. Great work! By the way, the lab woman who seems to have had a crush on Keppler was Mia. Keppler really fit in into the dark CSI universe. This show puts CSI: Miami and CSI: New York to shame. That scene between Grissom and Sara in the hallway was also wonderful. I remember when Sara was embarassed about her "dead body" odor when she first met Hank, the EMT. Perhaps, she was flashing back to that when she spotted Grissom.

Everybody agreed that this show was GREAT but nobody seemed SURPRISED with how it turned out. Knocked me for a loop because I didn't see it coming. Liked Keppler during the first show but then began thinking he was a dirty cop but by this one I was actually feeling sorry for the guy. Not only did he kill someone because of his pain and grief in losing Amy, but he killed the wrong SOB. AND I didn't catch the fact that Frank was the one who raped his daughter and caused her to cut her wrists! The "call me daddy" with the hooker went completely over my head (I don't go there) but not Keppler's!! Loved the Grissom/Sara bit and liked his rumpled looks but agree the way he looked on the cover of TV Guide was HOT - and I've never thought of him that way!! Had a few things I didn't get - what was the bit in the previous ep of the whisper of his name while he was in the morgue? Was that just a segue into his flashbacks in this week's show? Another thing I didn't get was what Amy said to Keppler as she lay in bed with her wrist cut? Something about her father. Wish I'd taped it so I could play it back, but something I DID GET was Catherine's tears and the worry when she spoke to Keppler on the phone. I knew where the two of them were going emotionally just seeing them together over the drinks and at the lab - but maybe I'm just a romantic. OH and I thought he jumped in front of Frank to save the hooker Frank was trying to shoot. Does everyone think it was Catherine? Didn't even realize she was there till the shot. Can't wait till next week and the box - I just felt it wasn't the time to think about it - too much going on. Wow did I say a lot ... sorry!!!!

LOL my schedule is along the 4am to 12 Noon EST lines... that's why I'm usually first with a comment. Hee!
I just said Hee. I'm up too early.
I can understand Catherine caring but she was VERY emotional either I think from a) HER overall emotional state or b) an attachment to Keppler. We saw Mia beginning to like him and she barely knew him so maybe Cat just fell hard for this charismatic, mysterious guy. Don't most women love a brooding loner? LOL Or maybe it's cause he was the first guy in a long time to come along with whom she could discuss the job and with whom she had things in common (the job). Don't they say lots of romances start at work? But then again that's cause we are stuck there 8-10 hours a day on average. Who else ya gonna meet? Maybe Catherine's headed for a breakdown sabbatical herself. Not sure where they are taking this. Or maybe it was simple plot device. Couldn't have Kep die without someone caring or the scene wouldn't have worked BUT she really cried. It was true sadness not just 'oh a young man/cop/friend of mine just got shot sadness'. She's seen alot and she lost it big time here.
Rethinking the Sara/Grissom scene I still think it's classic the way he's literally chasing her (although slowly) which just totally turns the last 7 years on it's backside. It's a turn of the tide if you ask me but I also wondered if her promise of 'you will' (see me later) was also a bit of 'when I will proceed to chew you out five ways from Friday for leaving me behind for a month! Stupid man!' before they kiss and make up. But who knows. Overall they seemed quite happy to be together again. Like kids. Reminded me of the dueling scene. And it was appropriate that Grissom should be made to wait to be able to even touch her given he just seemingly gave her no choice for 4 weeks on the same score.
I think Grissom not opening the box was plot device. They didn't want Billy out of too many eps so they got him back quck but they wanted to overlap the Kep arc with his return so they saved the Mini thing for next week. Plus he WAS going to open the box right before the phone rang (Catherine).
